I'm not a terribly happy camper about this one, but oh well. Based on every Steeler play I've watched over the past few years (pretty all of them), Pouncey is a solid, but not great center. I would peg him somewhere in the lower half of the top 10 in the league. Definitely not top 3, which is where he is now being paid. If I didn't care about the money, I'd be happy to have him extended. However, I just think the money could have been put to better use elsewhere.

Yep, I'm not worried about the salary, the cap is going to continue to go up, they've now anchored the line with a dominant center for the next 5 years, worth every penny IMO. And I think Munch has a little credibility, I don't know, I could be wrong, he might just be a scrub.

It is true Pouncey went down to injury because of bad luck then being injury prone but to play the devils advocate here if your injuries are sufficient it could have impact and wear his body down. Hopefully this is not the case but he has sustained pretty severe knee injury.

In all scenarios I can foresee, extending him makes room in 2014.

Boot55,I'm on board with what your saying.... I agree for the most part how BR describes Pouncey in this article. He has always been a really athletic center who moves well in space but struggles against the big NT's. Definitely a quality center but always seemed overrated to me.

I can go either way with it. I'm not the biggest Pouncey fan and tend to think he's a tad overhyped but that's just my opinion. Each time he's gone down we've found a pretty decent plug in, but the arguement can be made that the hope for the line in terms of scheme and such had to be scrapped to in order to stop any bleeding due to his absence. It really is a science and yeah stats and eyeballs can be deceiving at times. Hopefully he stays healthy and earns the dough!

My my big concern though is the cap. We have a few names coming up that'll be looking to get paid to and once Woodley is off the books we stand to have a hell of a lot more cash than in recent memory. Cortez, Worilds, Ben's extension etc... I would hate to tie our hands in any one player like we did Woodley. And ain't none of em gonna take a discount like Ike did. Still hoping there learned a lesson but we'll see I suppose.

I wouldn't worry about the cap it's projected to go up a lot in the next 2 years.

I'm late to the party, but IMO this is a great signing. The guy my be in the top 3 C in the NFL. He was very good 2 years ago, and I don't see him regressing with more experience, and better players surrounding him. Looking at the Oline today, we now have a very solid line with an above average Oline coach. Locking him up now vs down the road is a no brainer. For those who don't like this, wait til our rushing yards per game increase to 100 yards per game.

it was interesting to see pouncey who i think its 50% thug and his brother who i think is 80% thug get so emotional when he said there is LOVE HERE in pittsburg and he loves the owners, GM, coaches and teammates.. interesting to see that side of him .. as far as his brother here.. hes got more baggage than maurkice ... maurkice is just injury proned but his bro is a total thug ]

Is there something about the Pouncey boys I don't know about that makes people think they're thugs?

Yeah. They were friends with Aaron Hernandez (former Patriot TE and murderer) when they were teammates at Florida. That doesn't really bother me at all. Then, after Hernandez was arrested, they wore "Free Hernandez" hats like a couple of douchebags. In poor taste to say the least, and douchebaggy definitely, but I still think it's a leap to call either of them thugs. WAY too many people defended OJ Simpson, Johannes Mehserle, Michael Vick, and George Zimmerman, and while it makes them stupid and in many cases racist, it doesn't necessarily make them thugs.

I'll believe he's a thug when I hear about him doing something thuggish. I believe (hats aside) he's been good for us on and off the field, and I don't think the Steelers are in the cap situation or the mood to be dropping millions on what they view as character risks. They know him way better than we do, and they like him just fine. No, they love him.

IMO, very bad move money-wise ... top dollar for NOT a top level (and often injured) talent; more than just for this extenstion, it sets a very bad example for all future extensions beyond this point. I would have thought the Front Office would have learned their lesson by now, but I guess they haven't learned a damn thing.

really? past 2015 none of his money is guaranteed. it lowered his cap hit this year rolling part of his old salary into new money. this is very favorable for the team if something happens to him, self inflicted or otherwise. it's actually pretty team friendly.

This is pretty much how I feel. I wouldn't have been against trying to work out a deal as the year went on if it looked like he was a dominant player, but I don't care much for it at this point. It's not that he sucks, he's a good player, I just don't see him being worth that kind of money. I think we could have replaced him and spent the money elsewhere. I hope he proves me wrong and lights up the league though
