How does this measure up to the other "big contract" centres in the league?

He's now the highest paid center.

I'm going to use a lot of self control and avoid making a distasteful joke about Hernandez and jail house justice. I'll just say that I hope it never comes to Pouncey having to testify.

It looks to be the biggest in terms of new money, but it's hard to say definitively without seeing the guaranteed money.

Well, Kalil and Mack both had more fully guaranteed.

Well, like I said, extend the man right now! :innocent:

I thought they'd wait until later in the year before even thinking about extending him to see how his knee held up, but I think he came back from this injury so impressively that the coaches were sold immediately.

So far the only jailhouse justice he's seen is prison guards giving him access to another inmate so he could beat the crap out of the guy. Money rules the world. Even in prison.

We knew this was coming Pouncey getting a extension, I wonder who's next in line probably Cortez Allen.

True enough, but Hernandez is a big enough target without his celebrity status...

Ed Bouchette was finally right about something lol, he has been saying Pouncey's extension was in the works for sometime.

Sorry, and I know I'll get blasted, but this was plain dumb. There will many B'ing about the cap hit in 2/3 years. $9M for a center who we replaced with a guy making what, $1M and no obvious dropoff. Didn't they learn from the Woodley contract...keep them young and fresh and get rid of them when they get fat and happy.

If he can stay healthy it's a good deal. Hopefully, he stays away from the injuries, because he has had bad luck in the past.

Dunno about getting blasted... I'm kind of ambivalent about it.

On the one hand, what you say about the drop off last season is true to an extent, and I do wonder if Velasco had stayed healthy whether this would have affected things at all. (I don't see Wallace as beyond a back up at this point, but Velasco was more serious competition)

On the other hand, I think of two things: first, I remember the energy Pouncey injected into the team in his rookie year, and in contrast what a blow it was to the line psychologically when he went down last season. Second, the coaches were also watching the line last year, saw the same things as us in terms of the drop off, and still went down the route of committing to Pouncey. That all tells me that there's a lot more to come from him.

Troybellringer55 is right as well - the injuries were bad luck, rather than any inherent fragility. So I guess we'll see - the true judge of how sensible the contract is will be the o-line performance in the coming season, plain and simple.

They scrapped the whole zone blocking scheme they were planning on running with Pounce in there, so I'd say there was a huge drop off.

Wallace is a back up and Velesco was cut by Munch.

This keeps my hope of his brother signing here as LG next year alive!

Now that's nuts. Reasons: It will cost a crazy amount of money, and we already have / will have a ton of money tied up at C/G with Pouncey and DeCastro. Foster is a solid starter at this point, and relatively young. We can find a replacement for him when necessary. Munchak's Johnson might already be that guy. Mike Pouncey has never played OG in the NFL. I'm sure he'd be fine, but we don't actually know much he'd be worth, and he will demand a HUGE amount for his next contract. More than his brother, that's for sure.

It would be awesome and fun, don't get me wrong, but it will have to remain a fantasy.

The dropoff is not even measurable. Neither, really, is the worth of a center. Velasco filled in admirably, but we can't know how different the OL would have been with Pouncey. People try to quantify this with stats sometimes (like rushing YPC up the middle), which is the biggest reason PFF barely considers Pouncey an average player.

Reading Munchak's quotes from when he was hired, he seems like he's not dying to get back into the head coaching / OC business. I think he wants to be where he's happy. And the Steelers are the team to do that. Professional, and winning. And now he's got his main man Pouncey locked down for years. If anyone's worried about overpaying Pouncey, just pretend half the money went to Munchak. It will definitely help keep him around, and therefore improve the entire line in a whole different way.

Hopefully he stays away from gun toting psychopaths and federal indictments. Staying healthy would be icing on the cake.

IMO we should have allowed him to play out his deal and taken the 3rd round compensatory pick when he left as a free agent. Even if Pouncey was 100% healthy and didn't associate with and publicly support mass murderers ... and his equally stupid brother ... a deal this large for him would be iffy in my opinion. He's good, but not dominant.
