Yeah statistically the chances of getting a starter or a Pro Bowler decrease each round. There is no counter argument to that but after the draft players should be evaluated only on their merits not hang around for 4 years because they were drafted in the 1st round.

There are also a lot of reaches based on "potential" or positional need (see Cleveland QBs haha) as well.

    In 2015:

68 Pro Bowlers were 1st round picks.

    14 Pro Bowlers were UDFA.

48 Pro Bowlers were drafted after the 1st.

Yeah I mean it's definitely not a "science" of who's gonna pan out and who's not but certainly your odds are better of finding a quality player early. That's why I always feel like cb is an afterthought for the Steelers. We could name backer after backer that has been an impact player for the Steelers but when you start talking about cb you pretty much just think Blount and Woodson. It's like a "role playing" position or something on the team. I know that Ike was dependable and reliable but he's really not in the same category as Blount and Woodson. No ball skills and seemed to give up a lot of penalty yards. I honestly always thought that he benefited from a strong front 7 that covered up some holes in his game. I wish we would get a true shutdown and with this being such a WR and QB league now that position seems really needful. Seattle and Carolina both have shutdown corners and you can see how well they've done. I still don't expect us to place a high premium on the position though honestly. I think we will always be driven by backers.

I was listening to Sirius XM NFL radio the other day, and they had an interesting stat that several starters in SB 50 were undrafted. I don't remember the exact number, but it was more than 10 of the 44 starters.

So, no, being undrafted does not mean a player sucks. It means that talent evaluators didn't see the same potential in those guys that they saw in the players that were drafted - many of whom end up worse than many of the undrafted players. The draft is a very imprecise science, especially in the later rounds.

A lot of the undrafted guys went to small schools as well. They didn't get the scouting that USC or Ohio State get. Plus they may have had very raw skills. Sometimes they blossom when given the chance. But a chance it is, therefore not being drafted.

    Carlton Hasslerig.

Although he was more like a dandelion blossoming. Looked good at first, dwindled off, then blew away.

I agree; not an exact science by any means.
