Where did you see $9 million in dead money? The description of his contract on both OTC and Spotrac indicate zero dead money if he’s cut in the offseason, though Spotrac shows a mystery dead money charge if cut in 2023 (OTC doesn’t). The info on Spotrac is contradictory.

Yeah, those four interceptions he threw against the Browns in the playoffs indicate he wasn't the problem , I'm still waiting for someone to tell me when was the last time Ben and the offense got off to a fast start in the playoffs.

    1. The Steelers had a ~$7MM cap surplus entering the regular season, so $3MM is easily afforded.

    2. I've not seen anyone list the Steelers as on the hook for any dead money if they opt to cut him after 2022. (Which is the norm, dead money is derived from cutting a player to whom a club has prorated bonus money assigned, and that nearly always stays with the original team.)

    3. Haden was with the Steelers for five years. His final four carried cap numbers of $11.9MM, $8.7MM, $9.6MM, and $15.6MM, respectfully.

Yes. My bad. I misunderstood the podcast.
Upon further review Jackson’s deal looks like a $3 million rental for this season. Then we cut him. Then we can attempt to re-sign him if we like him.

I assume the Jackson trade was brought on by Witherspoon getting torched against the eagles and Wallace being injured.

Would you have waited until Jackson was cut?

How about this was Ben a better QB. Than Tomlin is a coach.

The main issue I have with trade is we need to get younger and cheaper on defense and who needs some meatless wins to go 6-11 or 7-10 when you need a total rebuild of o line. Qb possibly, dl, inside backer and corner

    Not me

Wait and you compete with 30 other teams

Plus if you waited you would have to give him a multi year contract with probably as much money in the signing bonus

Get him now see how he does and let him start to grow roots easier to sign then

I probably wouldn’t have even signed him after being cut, let alone traded for him. The only reason to grab a 30 year old corner as a 1/2 season rental is to win now. We’re not winning now. I’d rather give young guys a shot and see if they grow from the experience (like Pierre).

    That’s just my view though.

Cody Davis, Devin McCourty, Casey Hayward, and Patrick Scales off the top of My Head are all over 30 , and are still playing pretty well. Doesn't Me He will, but doesn't mean He won't.

Maybe he can play well this year, but what does a 1 year rental really gain us? Yes, we have him signed next year at a total cap hit of 12.75 million, so if we think we can be a contender in 2023 he could help… for maybe a year or two at best. However, for this year he will probably push a younger player who needs snaps out of the action. I’m going to watch with an open mind. I’ll root for him to help us, for sure.

All I'm saying is....He has a chance to help us for 3-4 years.....doesn’t mean He will, but there is as much chance He can... as there is a chance some young guy will. That's all. I personally haven't paid Him much attention in a couple years.....So I don't know how much He has left....I'm just throwing it out there.

I get what you're saying, but 'younger player' is a bit relative here. Wallace and Witherspoon are 27, Pierre 26. Wallace has a full three+ seasons as a starter under his belt, while Witherspoon's is pocked more with injuries/inactives. Of course Pierre has only a handful of starts, but has been pretty closely watched since being brought in as an UDFA.

I'm not saying they should give up on any of those guys, and see Jackson as little more than a lottery ticket, but I don't see his presence as causing appreciable harm to the DB room, and at $3MM is easily affordable, if inefficient given the grander scheme of things. And if even if he does flash some skills there's no way I see them entertaining his $12.75MM cap hit next year. They'll restructure or scrap it and start a new 2-/3-year deal from scratch.

What younger player just needs more snaps? Pierre? We've seen plenty of Pierre. He's a nice backup and special teamer, but I don't see a starting NFL cornerback there. I assume Jackson is going to be taking reps from Witherspoon. I think we've seen more than enough of him.

I agree with Thor. No matter how well Jackson plays, he's not coming back with his current contract. He's either going to take less or be gone.

I'm thinking the Jackson trade was brought on by all of our DBs getting injured around the same time.

I trust Omar Khan to make good cap related moves, since that's his area of expertise.

I think they're about done with Witherspoon, he might only play if there are injuries to the other CBs.
