You didn't offend anyone (except the OP apparently). This whole post is ridiculous. "Steeler fans shut up"???? "MY Steelers"??? Sorry, Glen, but we played like crap last week and there are definite issues with this team. Im pretty sure that is what everyone was upset about. Again, the beautiful thing about a message board is you get to CHOOSE what you want to read. :roll:

With that being said GO STEELERS

My post was a variation of the "usual response" I'd have on the old official board. It's not as good as I'd like, but it gets the point out I hope:

First, let's get this out of the way. We're all Steeler fans.

We all bleed black and gold. Most of us have been fans for life. Some of us are old enough and lucky enough to have witnessed the 70s Steelers win all 4 of their SBs. For some of you, Bill Cowher was the head coach before you were born. Some of you were born, raised, and live in or around Pittsburgh. Many of us have only visited Pittsburgh for games. Some of you may never have even seen the State of Pennsylvania. Some of you were born into Steeler fandom through family or location. Some of us latched onto them at an early age despite our Dad's best efforts to make us a fan of his own team. How we became a fan can be as varied as anything else in life. How long we've been a fan is most often merely a function of the timing of our birth.

In short, it doesn't matter how long we've been fans (we're assuming people aren't recent converts, aka: bandwagoners). It doesn't matter where you live. It doesn't matter what you do for a living, how old you are, or anything else. What matters is we are ALL Steeler fans. And as such, we are all part of Steeler Nation. We are all brothers and sisters in this beautiful black and gold family. Keep that in mind when your blood gets hot at something another fan says.

All of that said, we can be as varied as members of any large family. Some may be analytical. Some know their football Xs and Os so thoroughly, they could coach. Some played the game. Some are historians. Some live only in the present. We have grumps. We have sickeningly overly optimistic types. We have realists. Some may be relentless cheerleaders. Some are never happy. There are defensive purists. There are running game devotees. Some fans latch onto a certain player or players, and nothing and nobody can sway them against that player. We have comedians. We have pot stirrers. Some fans can be any of the above depending on the time of day.

So what kind of fan are you? There is no right or wrong.

Me? I see myself as a realist. But I'll admit to being pessimistic at times. I'm usually at my worst during and immediately after a loss, or a poorly played close game. Give me a day or 2, and I mellow out. I go through enormous bouts of nostalgia, yet look forward to the next win, the next playoff game, and (Football gods willing) the next Superbowl ring. If I catch myself being overly negative, I try to soften it using humor. Granted, that humor may be sarcastic at times, but no one is perfect.

Steeler games are my church. Steeler football is my life. When they lose, a piece of me dies inside. I expect my Steelers to be the toughest kids on the block. There has been a mythos around this team since I was a kid, and anything less grates my nerves. I want my team to be dominant, and more physical than anyone else. I do not tolerate seeing my team get pushed around. There is no lead I'm comfortable with. Intellectually, I know they're well in control, but emotionally, I don't feel safe until the final tick of the clock. I expect total defensive domination... to the point where even a first down can feel like failure to me. I know that's not rational, but that's how I can get.

I'll yell and scream loudly and cheer them on at the top of my voice... and that's when I'm at home! Forget if I'm lucky enough to be in attendance. But if I'm unhappy with how they're playing, or how the game is going, the very LAST thing I want to hear is optimism and apologies. I want to wallow in my anger or grief. That's not to say I don't appreciate those kinds of fans. I DO! They help bring me back to Earth. But, God, you guys can be annoying at certain moments (I'm looking at you, JD. j/k ) But then, I'm sure my grouchiness, and others anger annoys the hell out of the rah-rah types. In the heat of the moment, we just have to remember who the enemy is. It's not us.

Great post Ray. Funny that it's the optomist posts that help bring you back to earth because for me it''s the overly negative posts that set my head right. I get as mad as anyone after a loss, full of bad thoughts about the team but a few minutes of reading some of the negative stuff makes me go "ok, really, it's not that bad" and I'm on my way to recovery

Sometimes that works for me too. Like this week, someone made the comment about us going 8-8 at best or something along those lines. Now, that evil pessimist in me may have had a similar thought brewing, but as soon as I read it, I thought, "You'd say that after only 1 loss? Maybe 4, but one???"

To really put things in perspective I had discussed the opinion that I thought the NFC North was going to be the hardest division this year in terms of competition since the Bears had add alot of pieces, the Lions had seemed to have turned it around and the Packers are the Packers. The Vikes are so dependent on AP that without him it would seem the were going to come in fourth in the division. After week 1 I was saying ok maybe not and now after the Thursday game I have to say it is anybodies division to win and the level of competition I thought was going to be there is just not. Two weeks can turn anything on its head.
