I just counted down from the top, so your tied for 19th and my 20th are probably the same.

It's really tough to be a smothering defense any more, when we had our elite defenses with Polamalu, Harrison, Keisel, Smith etc we could do that just shut down offenses, but these days with all the pro offensive rules and the evolution of offense, it comes down to limiting big plays, and making your own splash plays on defense and taking the ball away.

This is not a fair fight between Offense and Defense, but the team needs to be much better on 1st and 2nd down, but when it matters the defense generally gets the job done, we don't have the corners for a true elite defense and we're badly missing CH.

But we do have the best defensive player in the NFL.

So if you’re an opposing offense you look at that and it is pretty simple to game plan. You run the ball and establish a quick short passing game. By having our CB’s play off in zone we are essentially giving them that. The problem is it allows the other team to have sustained drives and that kind of cb play does not fit with our rush defense. I hate that type of cb play. We are completely playing for holding them to field goals or hoping for a turnover with that style of defense.

I mentioned we at least need bigger interior defenders and somebody on here said the NFL isn’t like that anymore. I disagree. Sure the traditional 3-4 NT you don’t see much if but you still see a lot of bigger 3Tech DL with a traditional 2 man front with 330lbs and the two edge players outside.

Other teams will go with three down lineman if they trust the backend to hold up. The problem is our back end is slow with the exception of Minkah. To really take this defense to an elite level we still need that lock down corner that can play man press and totally take away one side of the field. That would free up the safeties to help in coverage with the other outside cb and play the underneath routes closer. It would literally condense the field for the whole defense.

Top two are more of a skew in numbers based on a small number of events

Bottom two are a better indicator

Losing Tuitt and Shazier set the defense back years.

I wish we had the scheme to play press coverage. If we don't get to the QB and your DB's play that far off you get Brady'ed. I love Lebeau to death but when we played Brady and the tv screen showed the first down marker and the DB's were not even in the picture giving the WR's free release I wanted to punch the screen as we then just got Brady'ed all the way down the field. Timing is huge with QB's so jamming the receiver or disrupting their route gives your line and LB's time to get to the QB.

yep - zone scheme SUCKS. Bend but don't break. No mixing it up. boring, predictable, no man coverage. just ugly

Top 10 QB's will kill us. Purdy shredded it.

    Love our OLB's!

yes - but they have had 7 years to blame the Shazier incident. ENOUGH.

Hoping for big things w Benton. Tuitt - now that just sucked. Giving Heyward that 3rtd contract was risky. Said it then. He's one of my all time fav's, but still risky. We got bit this year by it.

There was some sound reasoning behind it. One is that they didn't have a replacement in place. Another is that the guy hadn't missed a game due to injury since 2016

The way the rules are set up now....if You can be great at turnovers, and points that's enough. JMO

Although....You are correct about Brady....You can't change Your whole D, and what you have drafted for just one Guy. You must draft, and build for Your Division 1st.
Also with the way Qbs are being drafted by running abilities so much now....You don't want to play that much man across the board. I repeat this over , and over. There is a reason Cam Newton, and D. Watson have never beaten us, and Lamar has only won once(in overtime against Duck Hodges by a field goal), and why Belichick who is a mainly Man D....has never beaten them.

I know the QB will be running as the DB's have their back turned I get it. I know your feelings on Division first and don't disagree but my frustration with that Patriot pos is we never seemed to have changed our D for them except for one game it seemed in Pittsburgh where we owned them and I recall we played much more man and we owned them that game. I remember this because my brother and I were like "Dick, where the hell has this been". Then we reverted back to zone in the next playoff game we faced them and got shredded again. I'm still not over it as you can see. Breath, let it go, f that I can't and still want to blitz that d bag right into the ground, hard!!

Yeah, it's crazy that Cam Newton and Jake Plummer were undefeated vs. Patriots/Brady/Belichick

    This.

For that matter, how the league wants it. NFL Owners do not want another billion dollar lawsuit on their hands. That said, some of these rules "protecting the QB" really needs to be reviewed here. Not so much on field but in terms of what constitutes as such.

Example?! Kenny Pickett getting smacked around via Maxx Crosby or Minkah Fitzpatrick sticking his shoulder into Jimmy G. As it stands currently.... it comes down to a "Judgement Call". However, such calls are very controversial inherently to begin with. Hell, the word judgement is very opinionated based on circumstances; making the ruling that much more aggravating.

Using that info, refs can *judge* hits on what they deem as "unnecessary". Again, go back to the Kenny hit vs Jimmy hit. Line judges do see both.

... make it make sense!!
