    Hey bigbenhotness.

Serious here now. Not good enough, IMO. Improved, yes, however still not good enough. Serious!

Like my "Master Teacher" always stated to me after I thought I "nailed" a lesson plan; "Now find me a better way". It humbled me and made me work harder. And you know, after my self-reflections, I did find a better way. Shoot, I could look at a lesson plan that I implemented 10 years ago and would dissect and modify today because as minute as the change may be, that lesson today is still: Not good enough, IMO.

If we want the Super Bowl, yes I stated Super Bowl and that should be the annul goal here IMO. Right? Then the "D" has to play even better. Not just because of our "O" situation but because we are not #1 in all of the stats that you stated which means that there is room for improvement. And even if we were #1, we should be striving to improve upon those numbers as well. Tough? Maybe. Just all IMO!

Major improvement over 2014-2018. Maybe Butler wasn't the problem.

Ehh, we have a lot of elite talent on defense now. Maybe they are overcoming Butler.

I saw stats about the defense that put us way up there when the early part of the season is not counted. The real weighting should be after Minkah was on our team for a couple games. I think I saw we are the #2 defense right now when measuring a shorter period.

You are going to look like a much smarter coach when the team replaces Jonathan Bostic, Coty Sensabaugh and Sean Davis with Devin Bush, Steven Nelson and Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Spot on. If you're not improving, you're declining. Why? Because you're not the only one who can improve. I hate using the Pats and Brady as examples, but no matter how dominant they have been over the years, Brady has never been satisfied. He could walk off the field with a perfect passer rating and still say he needed to play better.

So yeah, it's not good enough.

That being said, it sure is more fun to watch than the past few years!!

    Hey Glory Days.

Yes, definitely more fun to watch and I am watching them with more confidence as the season is progressing. More confidence specially on the 3rd and longs and holding 4th quarter leads. Brady has the right attitude, like him or not. Look past the Cheats as a whole and give me his competitive edge. I like it very much.

Maybe you're right. I always felt the problem was both coaching and talent, regarding the defenses shortcomings (hence my repeating of the phrase: 'it's bad all over').

Off topic, but just pointing out that initially, your greeting for each reply was somewhat offputting. It annoyed me a little. But it has grown on me and I kind of like it now. You have added a measure of civility and panache to the forums, old chap. :hi:

Good way to look at it SDOT.

Maybe Butler should just sit back and enjoy the ride. Just kidding. He has to earn his keep too but not at the expense of screwing things up. Like I stated in another post: Yes, the "D" has made Leaps and Bounds. It is a combination of factors that I will list again here:
    • The "New and Improved" Bud.

    • The Nelson acquisition to complement Haden.

    • Devin Bush.

    • Butler finally "settling" into his position.

    • And other factors

    Hey The Glory Days.

Well thanks for the candor my friend. It is well-received. Like I stated, I always welcome feedback: good, bad, or neutral. Part of it is out of respect as I take into consideration that I am directly responding first to a person that took the time to respond to me. Then I think about the audience as a whole (world-wide) who as well took their time to read my thoughts and comments as well. I try to represent myself as a professional here but also in a light-hearted and fun way at the same time. Joining the board has been great for me and hopefully some of my postings, whether Steeler-related or not, have been intriguing, thought provoking, and just plain fun. That is why when I start a Thread I try my best to reply back to everyone that has taken the time to reply to me.

I admit, sometimes I do get a little anal. I know it is a message board (Duh! Smile) an informal place of conversation for the most part. I guess also in part, it is the teacher in me and the usage of the King's English. Secret (oh, cat is about to come out of the bag) sometimes I will use a spellcheck before I post here or for a regular old text message. I have heard so many complaints from college professors on how the students coming out of High School today are actually submitting papers with text acronyms (you know LOL) in them.

I took that to took heart and was really disappointed to hear that. mean yeah that is cool in a forum like here but on a college essay? Come on young folks. We are better than that! It is quite embarrassing given the United States' status as the "Greatest Country in the World" on so many levels.

So, if it makes you feel even a bit better, and has brightened your day in the slightest, then great. As always my friend, it is a pleasure conversing with you. Hope your day is off to a great start and finishes equally as strong. Take care.

I don’t know... It looks great now that Butler has the pieces in place to do what he wants to do. However, before he had all of pieces, shouldn’t he have schemed better to cover up our weaknesses? You know, instead of allowing opposing OCs to dictate unfavorable matchups like VW on Keenan Allen in man coverage for an entire half? The best DCs Will scheme to put their players in position to succeed, and cover for weaknesses to minimize failure.

Don’t get me wrong, I love what I’m seeing now. I just wonder if our defense could have been handled better when we had a roster that didn’t quite fit Butler’s preferred scheme.

so i tallied the top 5 defenses in ppg and what top 10 offenses they faced and average they given up to those top 10 offenses.

number in quotes is the ranking of offense in ppg

    patriots- ravens(1), cowboys(8),texans(10) 24.6 average
    49ers- bucs(4),sea(5),ravens(1) 21.3 avg
    bills- patriots(6),dallas(8) 15.5 avg
    bears-vikings(7), saints(9), 21.5 avg
    ravens- chiefs(3), sea(5), pats(6), texans(10) 9ers(2) 18.6 avg

bills are a small sample size but they look good. Ravens obviously are legit on both sides of the ball. Although it makes it easier when you run the ball and force teams to throw. We have given up an absurd 27.75 average to top offenses but it's kinda skewed with the healthy pats team and no minkah in the beginning.

Major improvement this year was Minkah arrival and to a lesser extent Bud actually doing something on defense.

Combining the two posts. I’m still not sold on Butler basically because of what Steel Elvis is saying. As far as macs point a few players recently have moved on and have been playing good ball when they’ve seemed so bad and out of place here. I think Butler tries to be the master of the square peg/ round hole and it obviously fails. Now we have the players to play his way or maybe excel in spite of him. We were able to overcome the loss of Tuitt , one should still be concerned that he needs this much talent to succeed. Multiple injuries or key departures and we can be back to square one in a hurry if history tells us anything. I still think it’s time for a change at DC but would love to keep Butler around to coach the LBs.

Unfortunately, they will most likely be without Dupree, Heyward or both.
