He says it is what it is and you think he may need professional help? Really

I think he's just frustrated and uncomfortable being behind a mic. He's being defensive because he has lost confidence and probably feels the pressure. He's putting on a front that he's not overly concerned but the way he is acting says differently. They have to try and figure out a way to get him pointed in the right direction...

It would be nice if a consummate pro like Haden took Burns under his wing, teach him how to prepare and play the position the right way.

I've said this since his rookie season, he is a long strider which is why is was good at hurdles. The issue with that is it takes him too long to get to speed, he is fast but not quick, there is a difference.

Look at all the good CBs out there, there are 2 types, those that have superior instincts and high football I.Q. , and those that are shifty and quick that can change direction and turn on a dime. When he got beat in the Bungals game he bit on a little juke by Boyd, but it took him so long to recover that was 10 yards away by time Boyd caught the TD.

He was a reach as a 1st rd pick but we all wanted a CB because the secondary was bad. He looked ok during the first half of the season because he was able to jump some routes but by the time there was tape on him it wasn't good.

He was getting beat for long TDs regularly and it got worse his second season and 1/2 way through his 3rd season it is becoming apparent he isn't going to get any better. I really would like to see him improve and be at least a mediocre CB but I doubt that happens, he may have a place if he accepts minimum pay as a ST player but not a CB.

So the question is, what does he need to do to improve? Footwork? Game prep? Better communication?

Because his mannerisms indicate he might need help, it seems he just doesn't care. He is pointing in a direction of giving up a golden opportunity of not only staying with the Steelers but possibly in the league. His past struggles and taking care of his family. It seems to me that he is giving up. This is the reason I said he might or should seek professional help. It's beyond "it is what it is"

But you probably wouldn't understand that. Some people need a little help to right the ship.

You got all that from what a couple quotes you read that he said? Man your talents are being wasted hanging around here.

I get the sense he's still trying to reconcile going with his instinct at appropriate times and following his assignment for the rest of it. I think the footwork may also a part in his ability to recover from a bad read.

    Welcome to the board, Bob!

Thank you! Been lurking for a while.

I tend to agree with you. Footwork will help but the “quick acceleration to recover” probably isn’t something that can be taught unfortunately.

Funny thing is earlier this season people were saying that we need to MoveOn from Hayden after the season. LOL

at this point I am not taking sides, he is kind of an enigma, I agree he doesn't have the speedy quickness of a Haden but everyone has to admit that all reviews were positive coming out of camp meaning he was showing something of value, a couple of poor/unlucky plays on film doesn't mean he starts looking for another line of work, I am willing to be patient and see what happens the next couple of weeks, I think that if the doubters on this board are correct than he would have had a much poorer camp and preseason but he didn't, go Steelers and lets get win Sunday vs. Ratbirds and give Flacco something to think about

Yes. Press conferences are a joke. Just watch one of Tomlins. I can predict what he says before he says it. Not that it's a problem. It's how things are now. have to be political.

Artie never woke up and said he wanted to be a bad football player. This is his career. He was a #1 pick. The expectations are high.

    And he's been struggling.

In my opinion, they need to find a way to get his confidence up. His physical abilities are not the issue. That's why they drafted him higher than many thought he should go.

So this issue comes down to coaching. << wonder if Rod Woodson is interested in a coaching gig.

I'm not against benching him as a starter to light a fire under his ass. I don't think they should give up on him though.

I'd give him some reps with the practice squad going up against the Offenses' #1s. Maybe he's getting those reps already, I don't know how MT structures his practices, but some practice against AB84 and JuJu can only help.

His confidence is at the bottom, I'd ease him into the games until he shows some fire in practice. I read Sensabaugh practiced fully today so I keep the same rotation.

Haden has been taking g a leadership role with the whole secondary. All those guys respect and look up to him. Maybe it's taking Artie a little longer to put his help to better use or maybe he needs to find it in himself. You know the horse to water.....
