James Harris started for the Bills several years before Joe Gilliam started for the Steelers.

Key to this question might be "in the NFL". Harris started for the Bills in the 1969 opener (which was OJ Simpson's first game, and I was there), But that was the AFL.
But Marlin Briscoe had started a few games for the Broncos in '68, but was WR thereafter. Harris did start again in '71, which also pre-dates Gilliams entry in the league by a year. Not sure if anybody else got a start other than those guys. But in any event, Joe Gilliam is NOT the answer to this question.

While I didn't get an answer right, it has been a while since one was asked. So, pardon if I offend the moderators of this thread, but here's my trivia question:

Who was it that gave Terry Bradshaw the nickname "Blond Bomber?"

The media? (And I think they spelled it "Blonde"), But I`m not the spelling police... :)
Just kidding, I don`t know, but I`m glad to see this thread back on the front page... Gets kinda disorganized, with people responding late/out of order, and whatnot, but still some cool tidbits...
    Good "bump", Rush2seven! :yeehaw:
(If I remember right, it had to do with his college team, which I forget, somewhere in the south... Maybe Mississippi/Louisiana? Bonus question, inserted into thread un-intentionally... My bad. )

It was the Chief wasn't it? I remember seeing an NFL Films where he is calling him that and I always figured he was the one that gave it to him.

Yes he did. He won it in 1989. That was the year Haley talked about to the Chiefs when he was there coach and they started bad. In 1989 Noll turned the team around after a slow start and got to the playoffs. He was named coach of the year for that accomplishment.

I don`t think so... Sr. might have called him that, but I believe he came out of college with that nickname.
For some reason, I am thinking some writer for a newspaper, coined the nickname, not his college teammates, but I could be wrong...

Sorry but Im NOT with you BFT on this one. 1989s winner was Lindy Infante Packers coach that year.

    It was a trick question.

Go to Chuck Noll's Wikipedia page. He was named "NFL COACH OF THE YEAR" according to them.

LOL. But if you google it it will also bring up other sites that say he won it too. Then there are some that say he doesn't. I wonder if those that are saying he did are using wikipedia as a reference?

Ahh OK. I get it now. Usually, when you hear 'Coach Of The Year' you're hearing about the AP Coach Of The Year Award. Coach Noll never received that honor. He was however selected as the Maxwell Football Club NFL Coach of the Year in 1989. The first year they offered that award.

I was thinking maybe it had something to do with like who offered the award. Do they even give that award anymore? As far as I know it's all AP. So who is right about this question? I'd say Myron is right because I think he was thinking of it in the context of how the award is given today.

Here is the correct answer, according to the 1990 media guide:

Chuck Noll won AFC Coach of the Year in 1989, awarded by the Pro Football Writers of America.

Not the AP Coach of the Year though. That was the Maxwell Football club or something along those lines (IIRC). That particular award is no longer awarded, so not quite the same as the others when you hear "Coach of the Year."
