when I said that a few weeks ago, everyone here said “who cares?”…

That aside, I agree it’s good to get a running game going by design and by RBs - means a lot more than QBs scrambling.

You are really going out on a limb comparing a guy in his second year to a member of the hall of fame

ummm - how old are you? Bettis was in Yr 2, when we gambled for him. Similar scenario of the day, TODAY - with Najee.

    thank you

I think that one of Najee's biggest problems is actually the play calling. So many of the runs have him getting the hand off and running to the outside. The problem is that he is not fast enough. He is always met at the edge by 3 to 5 defenders for no gain or a small loss because they are a lot faster than he is. Najee's skill set does not include outrunning the defense.

I agree though there are some conditions.
To run to the outside, you have to control the edge. He often run left so that is the LT.
We do not have a dominate LT.

The condition is, if the DE/OLB is not setting the edge (coming in shallow or too deep) then you can go.

I also agree on the play-calling. It drives me insane when they move running the middle, then get into a Redzone and call one of the stupid sweeps and get tackled for a 5-yard loss.
You definitely want to call plays that are high percentage to get you yards, not risk plays.

Hello? Is there anybody in there? You’re forgetting minor details. Bettis was an all pro as a rookie and rookie of the year. His second year found him with a new coach. That new coach wanted him to switch to fullback or be traded.

so thank you. Thank you very much.

Bettis is vastly better than Harris. Bettis had better vision, better feet and better power. The only thing Harris has over Bettis is receiving ability.

and your point is? Just wanted to help prove my point that comparing a second year player to a member of the hof is pointless?
Shall we compare loudernilk to MJG? Gentry to Heath? Cole to Dawson?

See Karl's post. It's not as if he was some great project who only needs time. Just because they got lucky with Villanueva doesn't mean it is a good idea to continue bargain-hunting for left tackles.

Bettis played three seasons for the Rams, so no, he wasn't in year two when the Steelers acquired him.

It appears to me over the years that they try to run with mediocre results and abandon all together far too soon

Help is on it's way. As someone said in another thread
There should be nobody drafted with the first 2 picks less than 300lbs.

Competition should be brought in to challenge the players on the left side of the Oline. The challenge could come from the draft or free agency. I don't know how the Steelers view Moore or Dotson. Maybe the Steelers believe both players haven't reached their ceiling yet? Players take time to develop. No player is perfect.

What I am suggesting is that competition should be brought in to challenge the starters on the left side of the Oline if possible.

Dotson could be a dominant player. Maybe Moore will take the next step? Who knows right?
