I heard Mason say that Tomlin called that pass play to close it out. Great call! Tomlin not living in his fears!

Do you think he would have called that with either Kenny or Mitch at QB?

Trust me I’ve seen it many times. Some games he has the Pom poms on full display. I want to see him succeed and win another SB or two for us but as a game manager I have very serious doubts.

"Play to win!" Didn't he steal that from Herm Edwards?

I think he has changed his approach later in the season out of necessity. They can't rely on the defense to win games. It is too broken. They went with that more aggressive approach from the beginning of the Bengals game. They should have done it sooner regardless of who was at quarterback.

I like the new approach, but I wish I could of seen a video like that when Pickett was QB. For some reason I don't think he did that with Pickett. Agree that some of that may be because he dose not trust our defense as much.

I would have liked to see him put more trust in Pickett earlier in the season. Pickett showed he needed training wheels early last season, but it was time to take them off this year. It's almost as if any thought Tomlin had of letting him cut loose was abandoned after the opener. That was a mistake. I still think the coaches put too much emphasis on not turning the ball over ever rather than living with the occasional mistake as Pickett developed. It led to a quarterback who is too risk-averse.

I like seeing this and it makes you wonder how many times he had this same approach before but the offense wasn't able to execute properly.

Agree, now he is saying can't play with scared money. Our offense with Pickett was so predictable and conservative if couldn't survive long in today's NFL.

This is a scenario that gives me heartburn.
With Canada in there, they hand the ball off 3 times.
With the Faulkner and Sullivan, they are slightly more open.

I subscribe to close out the game with what won it for you.
RE: Kenny, they need to take off anything resembling training wheels. He can make those throws and he has the added ability of scrambling.
So, it is basically sink or swim.

    Re: Mason
To me, wearing my Captain Hindsight cape, Mason was the guy they should have went with to bring on the rookie.
I saw, in that first training camp, Mason was throwing the best with Kenny behind him. Mitch was not impressive.
So, this leads me to say what I've said before, Mason tinkled in someone's grapenuts.

Unlike most of the season. Now we have to worship? :lolol: He was a big part of handcuffing both Kenny and Mitch, just don't make the big mistake and just be a game manager.

Now that he had no other option then to play Mason he's a hero? Mason finally showed what a QB could do with this offense and they have responded! So now is he going to call the offensive plays to? :hehehe:

To be fair, I think all of the defensive injuries have played a part in what the offensive scheme has looked like the last few weeks. It's fairly well known that Tomlin likes to lean on his defense to keep games close and hope the offense can do enough to win the game. Especially earlier in the year with Pickett playing poorly and the defense much healthier.
Now, he doesn't have that luxury and the offense has to score points. It's hard to tell what would have happened had Tomlin taken the shackles off of Pickett but it's hard to deny what the offense has done lately with Mason. He's going to have to carry the team because I just don't think the defense can do it right now.

At this point I think they do, can’t lean on the defense like they were. I think the bigger question is does Kenny or Mitch make the throw! I think Kenny does because that throw was to GP all the way and didn’t have to go through progressions. Mitch couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat.

I’m no Tomlin apologist, but credit where credit’s due. The pass to ice the game was a gutsy call when it would’ve been easy to call another run play to eat clock.

I wonder what word posters would have used if the play failed

I’m not going back to look but I’m guessing the game day post was interesting until the play was completed

It’s league average for his career and better than Bill Belichicks.
