    I don't think that's changed. Even in the "old days" long careers for running backs were the exception rather than the rule. It's a tough position to last a long time. We remember the guys who played a long time and forget the procession of guys who come and go. Even the Steelers - arguably the most successful franchise from 1970 on - have only had two guys last a real long time Harris and Bettis.

    Those guys are relatively rare but when they're found teams will ride them for all they're worth as they always have.

    I was about to post exactly the same thing. The only thing that might differ is that previously the length of the RBs career was limited due to injuries, whereas now it's more likely an excess of "decent" RBs who can do the job at a cheaper price to the one who's contract is up for renewal.
