In 2011 his O targeted the TE or RB position around 190 times......In 2010 he targeted the TE or RB position around 220 times....In 09 those #'s where 186 targets to those 2 groups....His O was #11,#1, and #15 in those years in running the Football...

Here are some stats from his Card days ..In 08 his O targeted that group about 180 times...In 07, about 160....His O was ranked 5th. and 2nd. in passing those 2 years....

Lets take a look at the Steeler O ...In 2011, 150 or so attempts to those groups...In 2010, 167 ....In 2009 ,155 or so....

After listening to Haley's pressers and going back and looking at film he is the perfect fit for what Mr. Rooney wants and what I want as well ...lol

He wants to protect Ben and run the ball more effectively.....The style of Haley will do both because he believes in using the RB'S and TE'S in the passing game to force Teams to defend the entire field....The proof to me is when he was at the Cards with 3 great WR'S and his O still targeted those spots as much or more than we did...

His style will fix a lot of the OL problems ,his style will slow the blitzes ,his style will force a lot more 1 on 1 coverage......He talks about getting the system to match the Talent well thats means using Miller more using the RB'S more in the passing game to help free up the Speed guys at WR.....Basically what I have been preaching for years.......Ben needs to get on board and stop making waves....

Agreed with everything you said. The game has changed, teams are throwing to their TE's and RB's more than ever. It's time for us to play that way as well and it's time for Ben to understand that airing it out constantly hasn't worked for us over the last 5 years and change is needed.

Good post, Play. I like what I see in those numbers, and I'm optimistic about his play calling with our weapons. I don't really think Ben has really been making waves, though. At least, not the way some would portray it. A lot of it is just media/internet sensationalism at its best. Time will tell how well he embraces change though, and just how much change there will be with the new OC.

Yeah maybe not waves....I think he could have spoken a little better this off season,,,but I expect his next comments will be in complete agreement with Mr. Rooney and his new OC Haley. If not I would then have a huge problem with Ben....

The team would have a huge problem. I don't anticipate that though, he'll play ball.

I think a lot of that is because Cassel sucks and likes to dump it off to a RB or throw to a TE short. And in Arizona because he had Kurt Warner and two 1,000 yard receivers.

What Mr.Rooney wants and how well he is going to fit in with our team is a different story. Will Ben accept throwing short to RB's and TE's or will Ben be Ben. If that is the case, who do you want more, Haley or Ben?

We can only hope, but I don't care what he did with other teams, I am concerned about how he meshes with the Steelers and he has to earn my respect, I'm not just going to give it to him based on what he did with completely different teams.

Does he deserve disrespect? Not saying you did. It's just one or the other. By the way, a resume is important. While his isn't stellar, it's pretty good and this organization finds a way to get some good stuff out of their coaches.

remember back 3 years ago, we had this same talk about ben looking at TE's and RB's being open short and then him looking them off to go downfield. even when they had wide open space around them. the next year he started throwing to the short guys more often, it was working, but slowly it started going back the other way again. it was also being used this year when heath was taking over games early and yet again ben went back to bad ben. if he would just keep it up and not revert back to his old ways after a while it would work much better. he just can't stand it for some reason and will get away from things that work.

BA could have been part of it, i don't know that for sure. i'd like to think fichtner taught him to go to these guys underneath and he saw some magic, and then back to bad ben. again last year , i think fichtner had him thinking TE's again then boom, he went back to bad ben. i very curious to see how fichtner works with ben this year and has the backing of haley to keep him on track with what fichtner is teaching him. to me it was like one step forward and two steps back for randy with him. i truely believe that anderson and whipple had the same problem with him. BA being the enabler. all this did was wipe out everything fichtner was trying to put through ben. keeping him as qb coach may be art's way of getting this across, because haley won't let him fall back out of what they are teaching him.

Well he deserves a measure of respect IMO because of what and how he did it with the other Teams......This was the premise of my post.....He used packages that included RB'S and TE'S a bunch with both Teams.....As I stated even with Fitz he still had designed plays to the RB'S and TE'S.....One could argue that Fitz could be the best WR in the game,,he is at least a top 3 guy in my book without a doubt....

What do we have as far as the young guys go?IMO 2 top 15 guys at this point....Neither Wallace or Brown are even close to Fitz IMO and will benefit greatly from learning there craft.....The point is the way he Coaches will allow them to become better route runners,to become better students of the game, and to master there 1 on 1 craft, because the play calling style will force that....

The next reason I have reached that conclusion as neither of those Teams had a better TE than Miller IMO,nor did they have complete RB'S like we do.....Both Mendenhall and Redman are every down RB'S and can excell in the passing game.....Different styles as 1 is a open field runner and the other is a Banger with some open field ability, but both are excellent in blitz PU and this should keep the Playbook wide open while there on the field......Simple Football 101 to me we may be running we may be passing this play could be going inside in could be going outside? We might have a designed short pass or this could be the huge Bomb......

This is why I think he is the perfect fit and his style is exactly what the Team and Ben needs....Again simple Football 101 ,force the 1 on 1 and make the D defend ever blade of grass on every play ...This extends Bens career and will force him to become a more complete QB......This is why BA is gone and is exactly why they hired Haley.....

The only name our new OC brought up, of his own volition, was Heath Miller during his welcoming presser.
Think it's highly probable we'll see a lot of dump off passes to the TE, right out of the chute, in our new Haley Offense.

    Good bad or ugly.

This will be great, and not only dump offs ,I would bet he has some designed deep routes with the speed guys running under neath as well......He will mix it up and force other Teams to play 1 on 1 ,as stated I envision MIller and our RB'S as huge contributers because of that....

Case and point that 1 blitz the Ravens run and cover our TE with Lewis and a single high safety is a joke.....That blitz has a PA TE wheel route written all over it.......Simply play fake the Zone trap and wheel Miller out of the backfield use Wallace or Brown to hold the single high safety to their side.....As stated it will be 1 on 1 because of the CB/SS blitz they run against that look.....I am sure Haley has seen this on tape and I fully expect this play to take that blitz out of the playbook for the Ravens....

My concern is not with number of targets, but rather how those targets are utilized. So Haley's offenses the last three years targeted the RB 2.5 times more per game than BA's with the Steelers. Not important unless those were more than mere QB dumpoffs to the RB in the flat or to the TE safety valve on a short hook pattern. What would be impressive is if those targets were designed routes that targeted the defense's weakness. The last thing I want our OC to do is to track numbers; I just want Haley to strategize and attack the defense with intelligent game plans and evolving in-game adjustments. I want offensive balance, but not in the numbers, like a 50/50 run/pass split; I want balance in that the defense doesn't know what's coming.

I'd be happy with 100 targets to the TE/RB's if those targets were meaningful and kept the defense honest.

    You have made very good points on this subject, however, I disagree with you on one thing, Mendenhall!! I hope that they don't bring him back, especially now, because of his injury. I hope that Redman is the starting Back and that they do one of two things;

    Number 1:
    Draft: Terrance Ganaway, RB/FB, Baylor
    Height: 6-0. Weight: 241.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.60.
    Arm: 31 3/4. Hand: 9 1/2.
    Projected Round (2011): 3-4.
1/16/12: Some teams in the NFL could look at Ganaway as a fullback. For the Bears, he played running back and had a good senior season. Ganaway ran against very easy fronts because teams played the deep part of the field to try to limit quarterback Robert Griffin III and wide receiver Kendall Wright. Ganaway ran for 1,547 yards (6.2 average) and 21 touchdowns in 2011. He has a nice mix of size and speed to run through tackles and break off some long runs. In the NFL, Ganaway could be a hybrid power back and fullback. He needs to improve on his receiving ability as he totaled only 12 receptions for 133 yards and one touchdown in his collegiate career.

I think the Steelers have an opportunity to get this guy and I hope they get him.

    Number 2:
In free agency get Mike Tolbert from the San Diego Chargers, RB, 5-9, 243, 26, 4yrs, from Coastal Carolina. I think he wold work well with Redman. Redman proved that he can get the job done in the Denver playoff game. He should be the starter. They need to trade Mendenhall for a pick and used that pick to draft Ganaway!

Haley's mentality is good for the steelers.Hes the second coming of bill cowher. We need some fire on the sidelines.Tomlin(quiet),lebeau(quiet),arians(quiet) and now that wilson(fiery)is probably not coming back because of accident.Haley is the perfect fit and plus he has imagination and we will no longer be a predictable offense.I'm loving it.He can't be worse then arians.Ben will adjust with no problem. We asked kordell to adjust to three OC and if he can post a 13-3 season then I know ben can.

Not sure how people know what players were targeted on offense. The QB is the player that determines where the football is delivered. The coaches provide the QB with several options.

The Card's rush game was near the bottom of the league when Haley was their OC. They ranked 29th and 32nd. The Steelers rush offense also scored more TD's then Haley's offenses from 2007 to 2011 (63 to 49). I am not attempting to trash Haley. Haleys' success will be tied directly to how well the players perform. Will be interesting to watch the same people praising Haley now being critical of him later.

Yes, and this is why I completely agree with Mac's post above. The one constant in all of this is BEN. If Haley cannot change his mind set it doesn't matter. I'm optimistic he can. We shall see.

Disagree GB. Even if those were "mere dump offs", each one of those may save Ben from a sack and may possibly pick up some yards rather than losing it. So even if they weren't necessarily a designed route, it would still be better than what we have been getting - Ben tackled, possibly injured, maybe a turnover, and lost yardage.

    yet, still . . . the cardinals didn't want him back: http://www.azcentral.com/sports/cardina ... nhunt.html

i'm always wary of an employee who isn't wanted back by his former employer. it looks like they were willing to take him on in a diminished capacity but wanted nothing to do with him as an OC.

the final sentence of the article seems to suggest that kurt warner made todd haley a coveted coach.

by all accounts, haley was not very well liked in the organization. an OC is not exactly a position where it's good to have a polarizing personality. as i said before, i don't think haley works well with others and i fear a major personality clash with benjamin todd.

I agree on almost ever level. You attack a D by exploiting the weakness.

BA called an offense to use the skill players he had, not to exploit situations or matchups. Haley is going to set up an create matchup problems for the other team. He will want to throw the ball long, but he will use Sanders and Brown and Miller and the RBs to create situations where Mike is left with one on one coverage. Ben will truly begin to understand what is in a good offense.

Wouldn't we agree that Whiz ran a good offense? Ben just likes to air it out. He should see enough of that under Haley to keep him happy, it's not like they are going to go back to the days of Cowher and the Bus.
