Thanks, time to start watching film. Contemplating a trip to the senior bowl this year. Anyone ever gone down for that?

Not high enough to go for top-notch CB.

They won't draft a top-notch CB anyway, they will probably draft another overrated LB in the first round like they have the last 2 drafts.

For what it's worth, Walter Football's draft site has none of the top corners going until pick 20 and after.

Even though I feel the same way you do, hopefully we're wrong, and they go for the top CB in the draft.

    Agree.

Both will be long gone before we pick at 22. Last draft was deep in WRs, and with the league becoming pass-friendly, much more teams will be looking to improve their DBs.

We need to be open to more than just CB at pick #22, and not reach. Realistically, we need upgrades worthy of 1st round consideration at CB, OLB, FS, SS and T. I would actually rate OLB as a slightly higher need than CB because I believe pass defense all starts with pressure. A savvy, ball hawking free safety can also cover up deficiencies at CB.

Ultimately we'll need a combination of high picks and mid-tier free agent signings at some of these positions to compete with next year's schedule.

Dude, spot on. I actually just used the phrase 'ball hawk safety' in a different thread. OLB is a higher priority than CB in my book.

I cannot help but look at the Ravens defense...non existent/crappy corners, and studs at linebackers and dline...which makes think..Steelers need to do that..OLB and DL then corners..

This isn't an impressive CB class, especially at the top. We should be able to get one of the better CBs at pick #22. That being said, S is very high on my priority list. OLB needs to be too as I doubt Mr Worilds will be back.

Yeah, I really hope we aren't locked in to drafting a CB with our first, as I think there are better ways to approach improving our defense.

I'd rate our defensive needs as :

    OLB
    S
    CB
    DL

We need an edge rusher, since we have no proven one on our roster. Worilds will be gone, and that won't be a big loss since he didn't really light it up this year, even when given the chances. Save his salary and put it towards Heyward. JJ could be dynamic, but his injury this year really set him back. Moats could fill in admirably as a starter until we found someone good, but he's not someone that would prevent us from taking a OLB high. HoJo, if he develops well, very well could be on our 53-roster next year, but again, he's an unknown. Silverback is probably done.

Like Elvis mentioned, a good safety can mask weak corners, and they come cheaper than top corners, which is important for long-term stability of the roster. Mitchell disappointed me as he never really improved throughout the season. Allen is a backup, while the Shark is a big question mark, but could be quality. A safety is needed.

We all know our corners aren't the best, but like Mrn6 said, neither are the Ravens' corners and their defense choked out our offense. While I would not shy away from drafting a top CB if one fell to us, it wouldn't be my priority since the trio of Gay, Blake and McCain didn't do all that bad.

We need DL depth, but not starters, so this is a distant 4th option, well behind the others. unless a clearly dominant DL is there at #22, this should be a 3rd round and later target.

I agree that OLB is a bigger need than corner. Having said that, the premiere pass rushing OLB prospects will be gone by 22. I know most of the board would hate it, but you can get the best left guard in the draft at 22.

I'm always in favor of bolstering the lines, especially OL with a franchise QB behind it. Look what Zack Martin did for Dallas, he just solidified that entire OL (already with that great LT and Travis Frederick) and turned DeMarco Murray into an all-pro and Romo into an Aikman immortality-challenger in the Dallas area.

We need to strengthen our defense, but taking OL at #22 would not be a frivolous pick. That would potentially be a lot of money tied up along the OL with all the #1's and 2's we'd have, but Ben would be retiring just as this hypothetical 1st round picks contract would be up so that would help absorb some of the cost of keeping the unit together.

PJ Williams of Florida State is pretty good, and will be a first round pick.

Peters got kicked off his team last season, red flag right there but he's certainly a first round talent.

if and only if we went cb in the first, I'd agree with Williams. not sure I agree with him that high overall but if it came to a definite corner pick by us he would be my choice. personally I don't think any of the corners this year should have first round grades.

A ball hawking safety better be high on everybody's list, along with
CB'S,OLB,OT,TE,DE ETC. EtC. Lots of room for improvement. Just think
of how many potential players that saw considerable amount of time this year
    will not be back.

I am so terribly conflicted with what to do at #22, that I may strongly think about trading back this year.

My main pick all year would have been CB Ifo Ekpre-Olomu (Oregon). I thought he was exactly what we needed - an aggressive playmaking Corner. Unfortunately with his knee injury, you can't use a 1st round pick on him.

I have also been advocating S Gerod Holliman (Louisville). I thought 14 INTs spoke volumes about what type of free ranging FS he could be. However, I think he has other limitations that make him more of a 2nd round type of prospect, much like David Amerson was at CB a couple of years back.

So what are we looking at #22? The 5th best OT? The 5th best OLB? I'm not sure I want to use a 1st round pick on either of those options either.

I don't see NT as that big of a need as I think McClendon is serviceable while I am interested in seeing Big Dan's development. That being said, Danny Shelton would be good value at #22. He could be a possible game changing NT ala Casey Hampton.

Along with Ekpre-Olomu, most of the other CBs have question marks. I have Marcus Peters as my most talented CB, but I question whether the Steelers would roll the dice on a guy like that @ #22? I think Trae Waynes will now be the first CB off the board and before we are able to pick. Not sure I like the prospects of PJ Williams at #22 either as he is steady but not much of a game changer.

So I guess my plan could be to trade back towards the end of Round 1 or beginning of Round 2, and focus on some of the OLBs that could still be around.

I really like Lorenzo Mauldin (Louisville). He has good size and good explosion. He wasn't as productive as some of the others I'll mention in a second, but he just reminds me of a football player.

Nate Orchard (Utah) was tied for 1st in sacks in the NCAA. Similar size and explosion to Mauldin. Good repetoire of pass rush moves. Really emerged this year after seemingly coming out of nowhere.

Hau'oli Kikaha (Washington). Highly productive, however, comes with alot of question marks. Has 2 torn ACLs, however, he was highly productive after these injuries. My main problem with him is alot of his sacks simply come from running the arc and running around OTs. I don't think he is going to get away with this at the NFL level. Needs to become more of a complete player.

I'm still conflicted at this point. On a personal note I would love Marcus Peters, even with his problems. He is compared to Aqib Talib, which I think is a good comparison. The Steelers need a player of that talent in their defensive backfield.

I could live with Danny Shelton even though I don't think it is a need.

Ultimately, I tihnk I am hoping we trade down and grab an OLB, whether is Mauldin, Orchard or maybe even Kikaha.
