NFL contracts aren't guaranteed, just the money up front is, which would almost certainly be less than what a franchise tag would cost.

Dead money was a problem for the Steelers' salary cap over the past few years. Most of the dead money (Woodley, Cortez Allen, etc) is gone after this year.

If Bell is suspended for a failed drug test, I don't think it effects their cap, should be no dead money.

Boy it be really nice if Ben would redo an team friendly deal for his last 3-4 season, that way he would have Brown and Bell around.
I doubt that would happen though.

We should pay him over market value , but as was stated in earned type of money ...A nice signing bonus , but leave a lot to be made for incentives....60 or 70 Mill with a 10 Mil signing seems about right to me....

If Bell's average of 161.6 yards from scrimmage holds he will be the 2nd most of all time behind priest holmes 163.4

Kind of. They basically agreed that his most recent suspension would be lowered to 3 games from 4 and it wouldn't count if he violated the substance abuse policy in the future. It more or less never happened

Adam Schefter reporting that he thinks the Steelers are likely to franchise Bell this offseason. If that happens what is that price tag?

I read this morning that they plan to franchise tag him while they work on a long-term contract in the off-season.

I just heard the same on the radio.

Seems like an odd way to start a negotiation by stating that so early. Is it just admitting negitiations are going to be tough and extended? Shot across the bow? Statement of the obvious, obviously?

They would have tagged Decastro, but they had the 5th year option available which gave them time to work out his 6 year deal, there are other tags available the transition tag and the non exclusive tag, either of which wouldnt be appropriate in retaining bell in my opinion, the non exclusive tag does require a team who would out bid us for bell to give us two 1st round picks which would be a nice bonus and ease the pain ...

Yeah thats the number, but once a team uses the tag they have until july 15 to work out a deal which would void that tag payout if they get an agreement....
