Not upgrading the secondary was an obvious question in the offseason, and now we will pay for it the entire season. Not sure how we will win 10 games with Ike as a starter. Problem is there is no one to back him up, and that's all on the FO! Shoot outs will be on the menu all year

Not sure how you look at that game and come away with only the secondary as a problem. Both sides of the ball in every facet failed in the second half up till the very end when they found their game just enough to eek out a win.

Sometimes I wonder how the coaches don't see this stuff. Ike is beyond terrible and has no business being out there.

If I am the OC of the opposing team,I would target Ike every play. If you don't complete the pass at least you can count on a penalty.

It is more than the secondary, the run defense is non-existent as is the pass rush. We also seem to get way to relaxed with a lead, the offense plays conservative and the defense doesn't play, this is going to be a long season but at least we won the first game, barely.

I'll be interested to see what those guys on here who do lots of analysis say about the play of the d-line in the second half. As you say, the run defense looked lethargic, and Hoyer had all day to throw the ball. Did they just slow down? Play more conservative? Execute less well? Hopefully some answers will appear at some point...

How are you narrowing down on the secondary? Where was the run D in the 3rd so that Troy and the secondary can concentrate on the back end green? If they constantly have to help up front and/or no pressure on the QB it's a problem.

    I don't buy it.

Defense failed as a whole the second half.. Couldn't stop the run, so we bit on play action passes every time. Cleveland's no huddle definitely hurt us too. We looked tired and couldn't set up in time for the next okay. Even cost us a time out at one point. Short week this week. Hopefully we get some things corrected.

They are saying that Shamarko has an injured achilles so this group could even get thinner.

I figure some people were disappointed that Cleveland grabbed Justin Gilbert before the Steeler's pick.
This game (being abused by Wheaton in the first half) showed that even a top 10 pick rookie cornerback won't be able to solve everything.

If we don't draft at least 2 corners next year Colbert needs to be fired. Hopefully one will be before the 5th round.

I was thinking much the same thing.

Yes, our DBs need work. But the pass rush comes first.

Supposedly we addressed the pass rush this past draft, that's all we heard this off season; at some point they have to open there eyes and see how bad our secondary is and that no amount of pass rush is going to fix it. The definition of insanity is to continue to do the same thing and expect different results.

I get that the defense looked like a different team in the 2nd half, but so did the offense. We were lucky to get out of this with a win, but at the same time, if you put Shazier up against anyone who was available at DB when we drafted, I think we make a bad choice in choosing a DB. Shazier made enough plays today to make sure we got a win. Sure, the DB position needs to be addressed, but if you haven't noticed, DB's are getting scorched all over the NFL. Investing in our LB core, and hopefully our Dline coming together will make the difference. Give it some time.

If we are going tp play the 3-4 we need a nose tackle. We dont curently have one. It all starts there.

Dang. Definitely will miss Thursdays game and probably more, achilles injuries are bad news.

I'm sure thats the plan, you build from the front to back, couldn't address everything in one draft.

Glad they didn't, Shazier will make more of an impact then any DB they could have drafted in the first. Glad we grabbed Tuitt in the second, as well, guy has 1st rd talent.
