Sean McDermott - Bills

It seems the National Sports media is crushing GM Brandon Beane and not Sean McDermott.




This was Josh Allen's easiest path to a Super Bowl this year. I don't think he is going to sniff one, to be honest.

 

That's completely untrue. Think of the WR dropping ball instead of the defender grabbing it. If when Cooks went to the ground he dropped it, would it have been a catch? Of course not, because there was no football move and you have to survive going to the ground. There was no football move when the defender grabbed it; therefore, the play is not over. The same rule applies whether a defender snatches it away or the WR drops it.

 

It does, if there is a tie, but there wasn't. The process of the catch hadn't been completed yet. If that ball hit the ground instead of the DB wrestling it away, it would have been incomplete. It can't go both ways. It can't be incomplete if he drops it but at the same time, complete and down by contact because a DB touched him. There was no football move, and so the play is alive until the ball hits the ground or there is a football move. The only football move made was by the DB.

The reality is Cooks had that ball. You can't let the DB just take it from you like that. Brandon Beane should be fired for his horrible roster construction. I'm not a McDermott fan either, but can admit that just maybe he would have done better if Beane had done his job.

The WR didn't keep control of the ball when he went to the ground. Didn't make a "football move".

If he hits the ground there and drops it, it's not a catch. It's incomplete.

He hit the ground and the DB ripped it away from him. If the ball being taken away from him is worse than him not keeping control of it (which he didn't), then there isn't really defense anymore IMO.

IMO, they should go back to the "need to keep possession through going to the ground". It's the rule for receptions that makes the most sense. It's how you'd play if you were just chucking the ball around with the boys. And it gets rid of most of the subjective ref BS.

I know fellow Steelers fans won't necessarily like this because of the James thing. But that wasn't a catch either IMO.

I like in Bills country and with the Steelers out, they're the team I wanted to win. And the AFCC game is probably going to suck with Nix having a broken ankle.

So I wouldn't have been upset if they called that a catch.

But it should be a catch IMO.

 

100% agree that "football move" is stupid.

It should go back to "did you maintain possession when you went to the ground".

Coaching matters. But the D really sucked in those 14 seconds too.

 

that’s like saying the guy who comes out of a pile after a runners knee is down gets the football.

I’m far from a Bills fan but they got hosed on that call.

 

I think it's because the rules are too lawyery.

Make simpler rules (e.g. have to maintain possession when going to the ground was the best rule for a catch they ever had because it made sense and was easy to determine without going frame by frame).

 

It's not the same as someone having possession before hand, then going down and someone taking the ball off of him. Because in that case, the person had possession before going to the ground.

The WR here never has possession of the ball. He had hands on it.

Then he hit the ground and lost control of the ball.

It would have been an incomplete pass if it fell to the ground instead of the DB coming away with it.

It "screwed us" here. But that rule was much better than any other rule for what a catch is the NFL has ever had.

Because it made sense. And could be figured out easily.

 

Give me horrible players and I can keep a lead for 14 seconds.
The entire team got complacent, including McDermott. They all thought the game was over and they acted like it. That's on the coaching staff.
Get your head in the game and get your players heads in the game too. Also, kick the damn ball in bounds to eat up time on the clock.
McDermott stopped coaching. He was too busy celebrating.

I get that the rule is stupid, but there's no "football move" here.

The PI call was much worse than this IMO (but I think they got the INT call right).

 

Can't cause a fumble, but the ground can cause an interception. Like you said, it can't cause a fumble because the player hasn't caught it yet. If he hasn't caught it yet by surviving the ground, how can he be down by contact?
The rule is messy and mirky, but the way they've been calling it for many years, this is consistent with that. This play would never be ruled a catch by any officiating crew.

I was a huge Bills fan the second the Steelers went out, so I wish it wasn't an INT, but it was with the way they enforce and interpret the rule book.

 

These firing left and right are going to make the Steelers organization look that more appealing to all the candidates. The steelers HC job has got to be looking like the most secure job in the NFL.

i just hope we make the right decision on our selection. Just get the best candidate for the job.

If the DB isn't there and he doesn't maintain possession when he goes to the ground, it wouldn't have been a fumble.

It would have been incomplete.

Yeah, the GM has really failed in Buffalo. Colbert really failed us the last few years of his reign, drafting too many projects and not enough proven college players. It didn't (feels good writing in past tense) help that our coaching staff couldn't develop players very well. For every player that met or exceeded expectations there were three or four that didnt. That's on Tomlin and his assistants.

Khan, not sure yet, I mostly like what he has done. I hated the Watt extension (just let him play out his final season), but I am sure Rooney demanded that get done. I didn't like the Metcalf trade, and that was likely on Khan.
His drafts seem to be pretty solid so far, especially since he was forced to draft for needs (so many holes left by Colbert).

McDermott is very similar to Tomlin, but if I had to choose I would take McDermott all day, every day (Tomlin was that mediocre).

I am hoping, like most of us, we pick a hungry, youngish OC (or DC) as HC, one that has a clear hire in mind for the other side of the ball that has been proven to be good.

 

AMEN. I am still traumatized by Jesse James TD that was then not. Such a horrible call, but due to a murky rule.

 

That makes no sense. The same people who praised Josh Allens accuracy improvement always fail to point out they got Diggs when it happened.

Its always a good idea to gave 1 legit #1Wr when you have a QB like Allen. The window won’t stay open forever. Get skill players while you can.

and Philly won a SB with Hurts and AJ Brown last year and totally embarrassed KC.
