I found it interesting the with the addition of Manning the Broncos came out and put up 31 points against the Steelers in their first game after having trouble scoring last year. The Broncos only averaged 19 points per game in 2011.

So I looked up the best scoring teams from last year.

Green Bay (560), New England(547) and New Orleans(513) scored over 500 points in the regular season.
Detroit (474) was fourth and there was a big drop off to San Diego (406), Carolina (406) and Atlanta (402). Those were the only teams over 400 points (25 ppg average)

I had to look up the last time that the Steelers scored over 400 points in a season. Only once, 17 years ago in 1995.

We have never had a great offence since Ben came to town, which makes me wonder how people can compare him to Brees, Brady, Manning, Rodgers, etc. Sure, he's helped us win 2 SB's, but lets not forget how much our defence helped us get there as well. It's not like Ben single handedly won us the SB like Rodgers did 2 years ago.

Ben is top 10, but he's nowhere near the top guys in the league.

First of all - if you define a great offense (yes - I know how to spell it) - as scoring a lot of points - you're not going to find many Pittsburgh teams past - present - or future that will qualify. However, is there ANYONE who thinks that the 1995 team - the only one to score over 400 points in a season - was BETTER than the offenses led by Bradshaw, or even THIS one?

The Steelers are NOT the kind of team that are going to take advantage of opportunities to have 40+ point scoring games when they can. When they get a good sized lead - they sit on it and run out the clock. It's been that way a lot. The Steelers offense under Ben has generally been formidable, versatile, and complimentary to the great defenses we have put on the field.

I know that there are some who would like to see HUGE point numbers every game, but that's a poor measure of good vs. bad on the offensive side of the ball. I'm like many of you that I WOULD like them to open it up just ONCE IN AWHILE - to show us what they are really capable of and shut up all the talking heads.

That being said - I will take the STEELERS offenses of the past 40 years to almost ANY other choice you'd put in front of me.

While the high flying offenses are fun to watch how many of them have won the SB? GB did it against us but give their D credit, they were pretty good. Year over year you need to be able to stike a balance between the run game, passing game and time of possession. Notice GB with their all-world offense lost their first playoff game last year to a team build similar to the Steelers. Eventually that high powered offense is going to run into a very good defense and/or have an off day. What does that team do when the passing game is not effective?

The interesting part is that as defenses get smaller to gear toward the pass will more teams start to look to run the ball, to dominate those smaller lines and LB's.

Again with Haley as the OC the hope is to put up more TD's than FG's in the redzone, take advantage of our weapons on offense and I thought Sunday night was a decent start. When was the last time Miller was that big of a factor in the passing game? It was nice to see Ben take advantage of what the d was giving us instead of forcing the deep ball all the time.

Just a CURIOUS statistic. I looked it UP because the steelers DON'T score a lot of POINTS. Sometimes SCORING more points than the OPPONENT, however, helps you WIN games. OTHER times keeping the OTHER team from scoring more than YOU helps you win games.

If you are saying YOU would rather SCORE less POINTS, then I disagree with you. If YOU are saying we have been SUCCESSFUL so these trivial statistics don't really matter, I agree with you.

The recent Super Bowl winners (and losers) are a mix of types of teams.

Giants (Patriots), Packers (Steelers), Saints (Colts), Steelers (Cardinals), Giants (Patriots), Colts(Bears), Steelers(Seahawks), Patriots(Eagles), Patriots(Panthers), Buccaneers(Raiders), Patriots(Rams). Losers in brackets. I stopped at the Patriots to avoid listing the Ravens.

That's what makes the NFL fun to watch.

The Steelers only allowed 21+ pts or more last yr, twice. The avg for the yr allowed was 12.1 pts vs 19 pts scored. No way the steelers should be scoring so few pts. Just my .02 .

Has Ben ever had a solid Oline, like Brees, Brady, Manning and Rogers? To get to the top, a QB needs 10 other players to help him get there, we dont even have a running game to set up the play action fake for the passing game, those other QBs you named have all that, Ben won games working with less, put any of those QBs behind our Oline and their stats wouldnt be any better than Bens...

I think this is wrong, put Brees, Brady, Manning or Rodgers behind our OL and it looks better and is healthier. Roethlisberger hasn't shown the ability to quickly read the defense and get rid of the ball. He doesn't throw it away to help the OL either. DL know they always have a chance at Roethlisberger, but know they have very little chance to get Manning.

Our running game is in transition right now, but we have had good running games with Roethlisberger.

Ben is close to the 3 or 4 top QB's in the league. I've always felt that Ben's inconsistency is what held the Steelers offense back more then any other factor. The offense will get better if Ben can become a more consistent QB.

Rodgers had a very weak line his first couple years. Brady has a weak line this year. Manning's line isn't anything special. Manning has had many years of playing with a non-existant running game. Ben is not the only QB in the league to have a weak line and no running game.

Put any of those guys behind our line and they continue to do exactly what they've been doing for years, except our line would immediately look better.
