What @Blast Furnace stated about the QB position is correct. However, there is a more deep yet simplistic underlying message overall. One that has said position at the heart of the NFL's Marketing and Logistics Strategy.

The current NFL Rules have set up for what has been both Roger Goodell's and the NFL Owners endgame since Goodell became commissioner; high octane, big box office offense with just enough excitement to keep fans engaged. The explosive increase and usage of Fantasy Sports in addition to now approved Sportsbook Operators have made the NFL's increased lust for "entertainment" even more apparent. Having "the guy" at QB for the NFL used to mean having a talent that could just merely boost the overall popularity of not just the team but the league as whole without having so much to do with marketing as the league then was mainly focused on bringing the whole aspect of what the NFL was at its core; teamwork makes the dream work. Since Goodell's appointment to commissioner though... the rules have just changed.

QBs are now officially the biggest bargaining chip in all of Professional Team Based Sports to not only market and popularize but to incentivize newer customers and, most importantly, newer international markets to invest in and consume as much NFL product as possible. Very few positions, in any North American Sport, give as much flexibility, financial prowess and likeability as the Quarterback does. However, notice how I have only stated Quarterback as a general term. Should said person be elite.... the value of that person skyrockets; doubly so the league's overall financial potential and gain. As such, the NFL has made no secret to protect its "interests and integrity" while delivering "excitement and entertainment"; protect the QB as much as possible and watch the money flow as much as possible in being the gist. So while it is tiresome for some to say a QB is needed in order to not just compete in the playoffs but compete for a Super Bowl...... those arguments sadly do not only hold weight but are a universal truth as teams like the 2015 Broncos, 2013 Seahawks, 2008 Steelers and 2000 Ravens are not ever coming back... to name a few.

Long story short?! No high profile to elite QB? No playoffs. Simple as that. One can thank the NFL for that as they have shown it will go to whatever depths in pursuit of all mighty dollar bill. A much better and more direct way of observation is the current remaining teams in the NFL Playoffs; all remaining have either above average to elite QBs.

“I think when you got red paint, you paint your barn red,” Tomlin said. “I acknowledge that we took a step back. There are some obvious tangible reasons why that occurred, so I am not going to get into that. I am not going to seek comfort in that. We have to be better. We intend to be, and that requires a lot of planning.”

I agree, but is Jimmy G really anything more than average????

Remember that this is the Jimmy G that did lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl in 2019. Granted, he was not the biggest reason for their title run but he did play a big part in it. Now, since then, he has been less than stellar; Trey Lance's selection being all but curtain call for him. That said, to say that Jimmy G is average is a bit unfair. There are outliers in every postseason of course, Nick Foles being the latest case but more on him later. That said, an above average QB is needed to make the playoffs and never mind a playoff run.

Heck, regarding Nick Foles... he was above average during the 2017 for the Eagles to even make the playoffs. While Nick Foles is not obtaining a gold jacker ever, he did have his greatest performance that season. Not saying Jimmy G is getting enshrined into Canton either but he has shown that he is good enough to get a team to the Post Season. Winning it all like Nick Foles did?.... that is another question all together.

I interpreted that differently. For me, Tomlin was giving Matt Canada a lukewarm vote of confidence essentially. Canada was hamstrung by a QB that, for all intensive purposes... was a statue in Big Ben. That said, Canada does deserve blame for not properly adjusting not only to his QBs strengths but also the entire Offense as a whole; hence Tomlin's refusal to elaborate further.

As I personally stated before... doubt that Canada is gone after one season. However, should this continue and post 2022.... I would imagine those rumblings be a bit louder from within the Organization and, most notably, the Owner; one that is very seldom into calling for change.

Yeah, memory fades a bit, that was when he started all 16 games. Still managed to get them to the AFC title game. They got him a QB coach in 2001? IIRC that was his best year and was MVP. AFC Championship game again, lost to NE.

Why they decided they didn't need one with Ben is kind of strange. You get one in late in his career to work with the back-ups. You'd figure with an organizational memory supposedly as good as the Steelers, they'd have that mistake to lean on.

You want Canada to stay??? The Chiefs game was a long shot going in, and we come out and run twice up middle for no gain, then throw behind the sticks on 3rd down for virtually no gain, and you want more of that? 7 punts on first 7 possessions! Why not pull out all stops in playoff game and throw on first down???
Rooney needs to override Tomlin and can Canada’s ass
