It's being reported that Mundy has been fined $21K for his hit to Darrius Heyward-Bey during the Raiders game on Sunday.

I think part of the punishment is the amount of air time this got and how this image (video) damages the integrity of the game. It's not just the contact IMO.

Maybe I'm just a homer, but that hit, while nasty, didn't seem like such an outrageously offensive hit. The receiver jumped up for the ball so Mundy didn't go low.

Plus I'll never understand how a human who has a head on their shoulders is expected to not lead with their head on some tackles. It's a physical impossibility when factoring in speed and tackling angles and runners trajectory sometimes.

I just thing intent is never considered in this enough.

I don't believe intent is considered, at all. The only consideration is whether the contact is legal, or not.

I agree with you that intent should be considered when the defender has made a reasonable attempt to avoid such contact. Because often times, the illegal contact is mitigated by movement of the offensive player, after the defender has committed to the move.

Saw that coming, start using your shoulders boys and you'll stop getting fined. Just about everyone else has adapted, I'm actually getting tired of our guys doing it. Look at Clarks hit last week, perfect, that's how you do it. Solid jarring hit and no fine.

I agree that the fine is a bit much for what he did, but he's gotten away with plenty, so i figure its just evening out in the end.

Nope not everyone has adapted. Just watch any game and every tackler leads with the head and makes a downward motion before impact. I have a Ravens fan friend and he was telling me that Harrison was dirty and plays wrong. I sat with him through a Ravens game last year and pointed out Ray Lewis leading with his head over and over...he gave up in the first half.

I said just about everyone. Look at SF, the most physical team in the league and doing it within the rules. I understand that it's still going to happen from time to time, just seems like we are having a really hard time adjusting.

Let's see...........Mundy hits a guy helmet to chin, knocks him out, he has to be carted off the field and is fined $21,000. Belicheat tries to get a REPLACEMENT officials attention by grabbing his sleeve and gets fined $50,000.? Now, I hate Bellychuck as much as anyone, but somethings wrong with this picture.

It's excessive but you can't touch a ref, not even a replacement. Big no no. Even know Bill was just trying to get the guy to stop and talk to him, can't do that. Personally I think the fine on him is bs but it is clearly stated that you can't touch a ref.

Am I being too ticky tacky technical with a "what if" they shake hands? I know where ur coming from in regards to putting
hands on someone, but he was just trying to get his attention. Albeit to yellat him (I think)...

I could be wrong but I don't think Bill was fined for that.

I was wondering about this as well. That was really blatant and should draw a fine.

I kept wondering when they were gonna announce a fine for this. As crappy as Mundy is, for a little while I was actually hoping they would suspend him just so we don't have to see his crappy excuse for play. But oh well. Maybe I was just mad.

I don't think Munday is bad. All the talking we did on Gay and look at him now. He is making plays. He made them here too but WE all just talked about his missed plays

I think so too. If Sanders had gotten injured from the hit he took from Giordano (who clearly launched) we'd be looking at a fine for him as well. This fine is a result of the injury, not the hit.

The NHL does this with their fines and suspensions. They take into account intent and injuries. Well, not right now of course.

I watched that Mundy replay over and over. What I saw was Mundy going straight for the ball and incidental contact to the players helmet.
