    He needs to prove it.

I don't disagree at all. Just saying the Jets aren't exactly promising the moon either. They could still draft QB this draft. Gotta have a backup plan.

Maybe the Jets asked Fields agent what the Steelers were offering, and they just had to up the offer a little more than what the Steelers offered in guaranteed money.

Colbert caused all of this mess by doing what he did.

Colbert IS the root cause. After Colbert’s joke of signing Trub, Pickett and the accidental drafted QB, it’s been “clean up in isle 2” by everyone else.

it would have been better if Colbert had done absolutely nothing! We would be years ahead….

if some idiot crashes your car, you can’t blame the mechanic for not being able to fix it. You also should never defend the idiot

Our QB room right now is Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson. How is this worse than anything Colbert put out there???

Do we really need to list the number of 1st round picks Colbert missed on in the last half decade? For as good as he was at the beginning of his tenure, he was that awful at the end.
Steelers first round picks over the years have been mostly solid but that all changed around 2015. I don't know if they lost a key scout or if Colbert just started getting lazy, or if Tomlin took over the draft and sucked at it, but something changed around that time.
It's going to take Kahn five or six years to dig out of this hole that Colbert left. The Steelers are often loyal to a fault. It was ok in the pre-FA days, but these days you need a nimble and cut-throat org to get ahead. We are finally seeing signs of it with Kahn.

And btw, before they drafted Roethlisberger they had Tommy Maddox and Charlie Batch as their QBs, a pretty fair match to what they have now.

Tommy Maddox and Charlie Batch were much better than Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson.

Maybe want to go back and have a look at Maddox's career. Had one good season with PIT, then faded badly. Yea, he played in more games than Rudolph but was just OK. Very much the same as Rudolph.

(I'll give you Batch vs Thompson, but none of these guys are more than mediocre QBs)

I think Colberts undoing was moving from drafting BPA to drafting for need.

Tommy Maddox won a playoff game where he threw for over 400 yards and if not for a blown roughing the kicker call he would have had us in the AFC championship game. You'll be waiting a long time until Mason Rudolph does anything close to that.

so u don’t think any of the past bad drafting has led to today’s team??

Well, that was kind of my point. Again, I'm not stumping for Fields being anything above mediocre. But he did alright in his six games last year before Tomlin had to revert back to his his guy. This offseason they knew Rodgers was getting released, and Tomlin has always liked him. So I don't think they ever got serious in negotiations with Fields.

As for the Jets I agree the money was better, not any sense of commitment. Fields knows the starting gig is his for now, but you think he feels committed to with a two-year deal they could get out of after one? It's essentially a one-year/$30M prove-it contract. Can't build much of a team around him on that kind of timeline. And besides, they already did that with Rodgers and that GM was fired. Don't think the new one's going there right out of the gates.

I didnt meant to imply you were stumping for him, just expressing I dont think the Steelers were sold on him. There was a report earlier that the Steelers were shocked they lost Fileds but doesn’t really add up because wouldn’t Fields agent have gone back to the Steelers telling them the Jets have a better offer on the table?

Maybe they were shocked that the Jets offered that but if they really wanted him, they could have matched the Jets offer.

As far as guarantees go, I think Fields was really bothered by being pulled when the team was 4-2. I dont think the Jets will do that. We’ll find out just what they think about him if they draft a QB or not but they are paying him 40 million, so must have some good feelings about him.

I think there is a good chance the Steelers will draft someone and Fields had to be wondering if he will be allowed to play the whole season. According to beat writers, the Steelers werent willing to alleviate him of those concerns.

No, I just throw that line in there at times because Fields can be a divisive topic. Not as high up there as Tomlin, but in the ranks of Trubisky (when STD was around), Edmunds v. Leonard, and Pickett. :lolol:

Maybe that his agent didn't look for a counteroffer is what shocked them. Agree that it doesn't add up - or else it's a bad look. If they were truly surprised it shows a pretty significant disconnect between FO and player. They had to know he'd be bothered by the benching last year, and questioning what, if any, plans the club had for him going forward.

Maddox never threw for over 400 yards in a playoff. As I said, a one season flash and then faded away. And Maddox was a first round pick, not a 3rd.

Ok it wasn't 400 yards, it was 367 and 3 TD's. After being down 17 points Maddox led the team to a 36-33 victory over the Browns. Again get back to me when Mason Rudolph does this.
