How come our coach cannot get a backup RB ready. This has happened two years in a row and with Parker. You would think a coach would learn.

No reason our backup RB is not getting 3-5 carries a game. It is easy with a RB.

Especially when both RB are young.

Sick of hearing about them not having experience. That is on Tomlin or Haley

Because Tomlin likes to run his leading back until their wheels fall. Quote by him. I agree that you need to give your back up runner a few carries to keep them from getting rusty. We have seen this many times before from Parker, Bell, and now DW.

I AGREE seems like there were times when we could have given them a longer breather and get some reps for the backups!!

Agree, it also gives you a chance to see what you have. Like right now we're going into a playoff game and really have no idea how our backup runner is going to perform. I know the coaches see them in practice but that's not the same as game conditions.

It is also on Ben and the rest of the Steelers players....They don't crush Teams like they should to allow BU'S in the game ...Hard to trust a BU when 1 play could swing the game..The Team as a whole will have to develop that killer instinct if we are to ever see what the young guys have early in their career .. We need game experience from all the young players and it's more the starters fault that they don't get it...

If they would make this a goal maybe they would stop losing to scrubs as well and do what they are supposed to and be planning on what position they want their Lady in after the game while the young guys get some experience...

They're not playing scrubs so that argument is invalid.

Agree that we need our RBs to be effective. If Toussant could be the second coming of Bell, that would be awesome.

While I agree that they should pepper in carries for the back-up throughout the game/season, I would also point out that there have been times that their mentality shifts too far the other way - I saw several games in Bell's first two years where he would come out running well for the first quarter, then get subbed by Jones/Blount for the entire 2nd quarter and half of the 3rd. If this was due to injury of conditioning on Bell, I could understand, but it seemed to just be game plan. Eventually last season they started sticking with Bell for longer stretches, leading to his 200 yard outburst and Blount leaving he field before the final whistle.

Yes you can take it too far, but were only talking a series or two. We have had injured running backs at the end of the year way too many times. And on top of that never know what we have because we didn't play them.

Also feel the same for anybody that's playing bad like Blake. It took most of the season to see what we had in Boykin because we were too stubborn to play a backup, at least to see know what you got.

Not playing scrubs today , but we have faced Teams with very little talent each and every year and we very rarely take command of those games if we even win them....

Those games are when BU'S could get work if the starters did what they should do ...

Tomlin doesn't live in his fears. He doesn't fear getting back ups reps, so he doesn't do it.

While I'm not the biggest fan of Tomlin's coaching ability I'm not sure there are many teams giving reps to 3rd and 4th string Rb's. There are only so many plays to go around. That and Mike loves the long ball.

In his first game vs the colts, Touissaint had 6 snaps and 4 carries. Against Denver and Cincy, he had 3 offensive snaps. Some high stakes games, so I can see why his numbers were low for those two games. He had 2 snaps vs Baltimore, and then 33 snaps vs the browns when DW went down.

The FO addressed the back up RB spot in the offseason with signing DW34. You can't predict Bell would have a season ender two years in a row. Tough task trying to develop your 3rd stringer this late in the season with the playoffs on the line. Denver and Cincy have great pass rushes so they will always favor the experienced guy. Offense was just out of sorts vs Balt. I'm not sure what Tomlin or Haley could have done more to insert LT33 or JT30. Especially with DW34 running as effectively as he did this year. The next man up mantra is key here - the back up has to take the spot of the starter and hopefully not lose a step. When they got rid of Archer and called up Touissaint later, that was a step in the right direction for trying to get that 3rd stringer acclimated. He was on the active roster and getting a few snaps. Not a lot but it was probably what they thought they could afford during this late season stretch imo.

It's just bad luck to continue losing RB's to injury, especially two in one season. There aren't too many good 3rd string RB's available.

I would have liked to have seen the Steelers work out Montee Ball when Bell went down. I know the Broncos cut him because of two rough years, but the kid has speed and was pretty electric at Wisconsin. I'm not saying they should have signed him, but he could have been an option.

But lets not forget, the Steelers did bring in a backup RB, Williams! Once the year starts, finding those good backup running backs becomes difficult, which is why I mentioned Ball as a potential option.

Common guys were not talking about playing 3 and 4 string running backs, were talking about utilizing more of the next back up running back. Basically if Bell is the starter than DW should get some snaps along the way. If DW is the starter because Bell is hurt than the next back should get a series or two in order to see what you have under game conditions. Right now we don't know what we have because prior to getting DW hurt in Cleveland our backup running back to DW only carried the ball 4 times.

I think last season and the beginning of this season really helped us out with preparing for games without bell. One or both of these rbs could be a big surprise. Neither have any film work on them,so if they have some game in them then we could be looking at a great trio at wr and a great trio at the rb position as well. We only need one great game from them and the DEA Williams will be back next week

There is film on Todman. He had 115 carries for a 4.1 yard average and 3 TDs in Jax. Also had 40 catches and 2 TDs. Oh.... And zero fumbles
