Yahya Black is 6'5, 335lbs with 35 inch arms. That said, while physical dimensions help, they don't decide the players fate. The player's basics and fundamentals do.


Black's issue wasn't an inability to maintain leverage but the inconsistency of it. Year two he has gotten better at it. I still believe he is a year away from being great at it but this is where my statement of physical dimensions helping comes into play. Even if he is above average, there are very few, and I mean very few, Interior Offensive Lineman who can take Black one on one.


Rubio's issues stem more so on counter moves and inconsistency in his hand strikes rather than leverage.

Yahya Black is the classic massive 0-tech space-eater the new staff wanted at nose. He’s " listed " around 330-336 now, hard to displace when he stays square, and he can occupy two gaps. The ILB's appraciate this. The problems are his range is mostly arm length and mass, technique and pad level are inconsistent (Chris Hoke and others have said he still gets driven or ends up five yards downfield on doubles), he doesn’t create many splash plays, plus the extra weight raise legitimate stamina questions.

Gabriel Rubio has been a rookie surprise. The sixth-round Notre Dame pick has consistently shown better shed/disengage, quicker get-off, and the ability to make tackles versus the run while still pushing the pocket some. He’s aware, uses his length and violent hands well, and has lined up at 0, 1, and 3-tech without looking lost. That’s why he’s been running as the second-team nose and has climbed ahead of some veterans on early depth charts.He finds the ball and doesn’t just sit and eat blocks.

Black is still listed as the first-team because of the sheer size and the scheme’s preference for a true two-gap plugger in base. The ILB's should love him. Rubio is the more functional, versatile piece right now and the one making more actual plays. If the staff values “won’t get moved” over “makes plays and can slide to 3-tech,” Black keeps the starting nod. If they want someone who can stay on the field longer and disrupt rather than just occupy, Rubio has earned more snaps than a typical sixth-rounder.

There are times where one is better than the other. Graham must play the right guy based on situational football.

Let's be clear. You didn't just call me out for perceived whatever on this board. You falsely claimed that I was fired from my job with a local media outlet in Pittsburgh. You attacked my career. I'm not offended because some poster I never even noticed before two days ago wrote something false about me. That's not what this is about. Writing something personal like that about another member of this board is sinking pretty low. You may want to re-evaluate how interactions here are affecting you if you feel the need to do such things.

 

I don’t know. I saw Black being blocked one on one a lot in the preseason. He gets to high and lets them get underneath him and win with leverage. Size matters but technique matters more. Daniel McCullers had size in spades bit that didn’t help him.

Why do some people need to have the last word?

Some people must have the last word because they feel like they have something to prove. They feel they can save face and make themselves right if they have the last word. Having the last word may be their way of putting someone in their place. It's also a way someone may use protect their image and self-esteem.

 

One guy had some moments against actual NFL starters in games that counted. And he also had some not so great moments where it looked like he was on roller skates.

The other guy is a lightly regarded draft prospect that had some moments in televised practice scrimmages. And we have yet to see him play in any situation that actually matters.

Far too early to tell who is "better" than who. Both guys are worth being excited about what they can develop into. But both likely have a ton of growing yet to do. Black likely needs to continue to work with an NFL strength and conditioning program and to refine his approach and technique. Rubio has to do both of those and is a year behind Black.

I feel like it takes these non first round DL guys 2-3 years to get to where the NFL requires them to be.
