Well because Rooney told Tomlin and Ariens to run and run more effectively. They didn't and Ariens is gone.

Not necessarily more runs but better runs and more creative situational play calling. Mix things up, keep the other teams defense guessing, be unpredictable, and most importantly, SCORE MORE POINTS! I'm betting that what they will be told.

Pitts needs the running game back, so the play actions and roll outs can come back to life.

I'm not sure that you can get better runs without having more runs. It's a nice theory to think that you can but I don't think that history bears that out. The rules of the game have changed so I could be wrong.

Better runs = runs utilizing a full back as extra blocker to bust open a hole, runs when defense expects pass, runs other than plunges into a stacked line that gains no yardage or loses yardage, and using our running backs for screen passes, which is really just a type of a running play similar to a shuttle pass.

I also think that he probably would like to see him run the ball more efficiently.

Exactly. Why some people say that more effective running means more running is beyond me.

Why not? He might get some good ideas. Maybe if BA read some of these threads, he would have extracted his head from his fourth point of contact.

Agreed! I don't think we need to run more, but instead design running plays that are actually effective. Something I just don't think Arians knew how and when to do.

This is a passing league and we have a great corp of weapons for the passing game. I don't see us going away from that. But with Arians it had to do with his situational play calling more than anything. When the boss tells you to run more and you constantly line up 5 wide on 3rd and 1...........

This is not the NFL of John Riggins or even Terrell Davis. This is a passing league now, look at the teams that are winning Super Bowls. Tenn. and Minn have 2 of the best running games, but you will never see them in the Super Bowl with their current passing games. Look at the Giants, run effectively, but passing got them the go ahead score (other than the defensive flop) and the win.

Every running back there is will tell you that in order to be better at running the ball they need more reps. And you know what? I believe them.

The passing game is also what got the Patriots called for a safety on their first freaking offensive play from deep in their own territory. A called pass play from that position was bone-headed. That, and Brady's decision to heave it to nowhere without getting outside the T's. That was clearly a running down where a pass first offense failed. Precisely why you need an effective running game with a true lead blocker and an OL who can move bodies forward. And by effective running and playcalling, I'm not talking about that ridiculous delayed draw to mini-memo up the middle.

RB performance is also impacted by play calling / offensive formations.

I'd argue, however, that it was running the ball that eventually wore down that patriots defense. At first, the Ginats could do nothing on the ground. But they kept at it, and eventually Jacobs and Bradshaw were getting 5-6 yards per run. This moved the safeties up and opened up the pass for Eli in the second half.

The play action is still the most effective play in an offense. Both Manning and Brady used it well. There is NO REASON why this offense shouldn't be able to burn its opponent on a play action roll out 3-4 times a game. We have one of the best QBs in the NFL when throwing on the run.

(Of course, you can't take advantage of this type of play if you're going 5-wide, with an empty set all the time, particulalrly on 3rd and 4.)

    Mr. Haley, take note.
