Rookie Steelers that impressed me during the 1st preseason game

In no particular order, I’ll start with the defense.

Spears closed well on ball-carriers and tackled solidly, including one nice play for a loss.

Rubio showed he can stuff the run and collapse the pocket. His big body also kept the offensive lineman from getting into our back seven. Color me surprised — there was limited information on him during the draft process. Hats off to the scouting department.

Bernard proved he can play and break some tackles. Good to see after he was mostly MIA in camp.

Allar looked and played exceptionally well. He went 10-for-13 for 153 yards, threw two touchdowns, and ran for another. Drew was as good as any Steelers rookie QB making his preseason debut… at least in the last 50 years.

Wetjen looked like a solid return man (had a good one called back), but it was as a receiver where he really shone.

Early results: this is a very good rookie class.
