With their backs against the wall and perhaps a playoff berth on the line, the Pittsburgh Steelers played arguably their worst game of the season against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 15. When asked about the team’s performance in the 30-13 loss, rookie cornerback Joey Porter Jr. didn’t mince words in front of reporters.

“We played like s*** today,” Porter told reporters, via TribLive.com’s Chris Adamski. “There’s no sugarcoating that.”

Based on the somewhat misleading headline, I was ready to get on him about all his penalties, but this is nothing more than a statement of fact. I like it.

I was disheartened looking at the film.
They have injuries on Defense, and taking that into consideration, I still think it is also Austin's time to go.
We could argue that the defense is the only bright spot, but too many times they give up big plays.
Granted, he is a much lower priority than Canada was - he was a cancer, Matt Cancer.

Porter Jr. is the types of players we need. Seems to have some leadership to him, like his Dad.

As bad as the year has been I don't think the draft class we had this year is a bad one.

we could have had Jalen Hurts with the Chase Claypool pick that year, that eventually turned into the JPJ pick. I'd rather have jalen hurts than JPJ right now.

That is a bit unfair to Porter.

Austin has no game plan. His whole defense revolves around Watt or Highsmith getting to the QB. If that doesn’t happen, there’s no plan B

There's no emoticon for "somewhat agree"
Which is what I do in this response.
Austin is unable to generate ANY kind of pressure - where the heck is Highsmith.
So, you're spot on in that aspect.

Even his corner Blitzes don't work at all.

Someone made a good point somewhere else too. re LB depth. He runs a 3-4 primarily. You need 4 LBs starting and at least 3 rotational. the 3 need to be legitimate challengers to starters, in competition to be on the field more.
Not signed off the street players.

    Some comments:

Ben was coming off a major injury. The team wanted to load him up with weapons.

Ben is notoriously insecure. Even though his career was winding down, he would have perceived Hurts as a threat, ala Mason Rudolph, and who knows what would have happened.

There’s no guarantee that Hurts would have developed into the player he’s today if we drafted him. He needed development. Does anyone think Canada and Fichtner have the skills to develop a NFL QB?

Coaching is below par in general, I think. Austin is nothing special , THAT is for sure.

Canada was no good, neither is Austin, and yes, time for Tomlin to hang it up too.

complete coaching turnover is where we begin to rebuild this.

Hell, for me, this is the best draft class the team has had since 2017. As far as I am concerned, 2018 to 2021 have been nothing short of a disappointment. Time is also running out on the 2022 Class; George Pickens being front and center of it all.

If I am AR II, keep both Kahn and Weidl around together as long as possible!! :drinks: For that matter, please head to more of the PAC 12 for talent!!! Should that happen come the 2024 Pro Day Circuit with the team, could be onto something there.

I told my wife 2 or three weeks ago after Porter got a penalty that he's probably the one guy on the Steelers I don't mind seeing get a penalty. He plays hard football and is covering the toughest opponents when he's on the field. You're going to get a penalty doing that sometimes. I think that the defense capability he provides more than offsets the occasional penalty.

Tomlin has admitted to having full control of the defense, we have seen at least 3 DC's get blamed for the defenses failures and yet Tomlin states he has control. When does the blame actually start to point at Tomlin for these defensive collapses? Tomlin has alos been on record as saying he is involved with the offense as well. When does the spotlight for the offensive failures start to point towards Tomlin? And please dont tell me he is just spewing rhetoric to cover for his coordinators. Does he keeps firing them to cover for himself or is he making them fall on the sword to cover his own....?

It is. Austin is just a puppet.

Khan and Weidl had a solid draft and will have to have another two with selected FA's to bring this back to being above the line.

My thought too. Under are system Hurts could have been completely different. Eagle fans are so picky. All I heard the first two years was they hated him. Now, regardless of all the wins the guy has got them they are b!tching and moaning big time after 3 straight loses. I golf with a lot of unwoke older guys. The stuff they say is terrible and it goes on the whole frigging round.

They had that until they lost Holcomb and Alexander.

The depth is starting, and they aren't starters.
Holcomb, I knew about in Washington. Great guy, border line starter. Lacks speed but has lots of heart. Herbig reminds me of a young Holcomb.
Kwon was that journeyman. He really should be a backup.

Heck, in looking at the depth chart... TJ and Highsmith are the only LB's they have. (for a 3-4)
Walker is interesting. Still a depth kind of guy by most standards.
Roberts is probably the best interior LB on this roster.
    Robinson looks like a bust.
They really need to look at youth and try to get a little faster in the interior.

I like a base 3-4 but sometimes I wonder if the switch to a more conventional base 4-3 is a better fit.
They don't spend a lot of time in either though, so maybe it's a moot point.
At the end of the day, they thought they addressed LB, but not really.
Maybe a better discussion would be if they are being utilized right.

It's amazing when you look at the coaches that have been under Any Reid and then look at the coaches that Tomlin has hired (not inherited or forced). Coaches come to Pittsburgh to die these days.

Holcomb was a solid starter, more athletic than you are giving him credit for being. Alexander was playing very well when he got hurt. It's not as if he wasn't athletic enough to do the job. Those two seemed to be sharing the inside spots with Roberts, which was working out fine once they all settled in.

I have to disagree with your assessment that they failed to address linebacker. The interior group was solid until the injuries hit. They brought in Golden, who has been a starter as an edge rusher in the draft, and drafted Herbig to provide depth outside. Robinson is a bust, but the rest of the group was solid. Now, they are stuck playing Roberts full time, which doesn't suit his skills. Robinson turning out to be useless hurt, but mostly because of the injuries ahead of him.

This team is so fractured right now. A rookie, has to be the one to publicly call out the effort, or lack thereof. While our high profile 2nd year superstar is all about himself. Tomlin has lost this team.

JPJ has been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dismal season.
