More observations on camp. Good to see Nik Embernate mentioned, doing well, I like this kids style.

    Rookie camp completed

The Steelers and their 41 rookies and first-year players completed their first weekend of working with the team.

By all accounts, the team came away happy with what it saw.

First-round pick Jarvis Jones came off like James Farrior in interviews - thoughtful and humble - and looked the part on the field.

Second-round pick Le'Veon Bell showed why the Steelers thought so highly of him, displaying some wiggle in the open field to go along with his combination of size and speed.

Forget the idea of Bell "sharing" the workload for the Steelers. He's the favorite to start and get 300 carries.

Third-rounder Markus Wheaton is extremely quick and was sharp running his routes.

Fourth-rounder Shamarko Thomas appears as if he'll be a special teams star, while also stepping into the safety rotation - on the strong side - once he gets the nuances of Dick LeBeau's defense down.

Landry Jones had a tough weekend, but that's not all that out of the ordinary for a quarterback learning a new vernacular with new receivers.

Priority free agent wideout Reggie Dunn has a legitimate shot at making this team despite his lack of size. The 5-8 speedster is as fast as his 4.25 40-time would suggest and is elusive and quick enough to play gunner on coverage units. I should also mention that he returned five kickoffs 100 or more yards in college.

Offensive lineman Nik Embernate is another priority free agent with an excellent chance of making this team. The powerful guard is nasty to the bone. Can't wait to see him hitting people for real once training camp begins.

One thing I started thinking about Dunn that has me a little worried is that wouldn't a guy that small be a huge fumble risk when getting rocked by guys with full heads of steam plowing towards him? That was sort of my worry with Rainey as well. I'm really excited for Dunn I just hope that he has great ball security because being as little as he is you've GOTTA figure that when he takes what might even be a minor hit by NFL standards it's still gonna be like getting hit by a missile to him.

Who was the monster the Steelers had returning KO's and punts a few years ago?

That was the rub on Rainey as well. Very tiny. Fast but could he withstand heavy hits.

    Time will tell

that experiment didn't last long though. is there room for dunn? gilreath was a pretty good college return guy too, but he's also small. LSH had 3 KO returns for TD's. tons of competition this year in camp. it should make for a fun preseason.

i'm not getting to excited about these rookies looking good in shorts. it's way early.

No I think he is talking about Najeh Davenport or Carey Davis during that period when they seemed to want to put slow bowling ball type running backs in for kick returns.

I like what I've heard and seen from this kid in some of the tape I've watched (not a ton). I wonder if he could learn to play some center... If so, that would drastically improve our chances of keeping him around. We've seen a ton of guys over the years that stuck around because they could play more than one position (Ramon Foster, Doug Legurskey, Trai Essex).

Didn't last long with us, but he's been with the Lions ever since. THey actually use him for something other than just kickoff returns. Don't get me wrong he isn't used extensively, but he also returns punts for them and sees snaps at wr and rb.

I think I made this point before soimewhere, but I always felt Logan was underused. They made a much better effort with Rainey, but even then he was a bit mishandled... making him the feature back because you've benched everyone else is always going to be problematic... So hopefully they can make it work with Dunn - third time lucky!

I wanted to see Haley use Wallace and Rainey as a part of a 4wr set. YOu have two guys that are absurdly fast make the defense respect that speed. By doing so you would open up routes underneath for Brown and Sanders. When we started seeing teams sell out against the run and short routes it made zero sense to me why we kept playing into their hands.

I also think we basically sold all of Rainey's tricks in preseason. In preseason, he looked fantastic. Then in regular season, they would telegraph the playcall, and he would be lit up as soon as he got the ball. There just seemed to be a lack of creativity with how to use him.

My sense of it, though, is that Dunn will have to show something more than ST ability to stay on the roster and figure in the offensive scheming... here's hoping.

i'm well aware he's still in troit, but still not making much difference there either. these positions on gameday become very important and if we get a guy that can play another bigger role the better. we have seen with injuries around here 45 guys sometimes isn't enough. unless dunn excels as a wr too, i just don't see him making anymore then the PS maybe.

as i said LSH had 3 TD returns, wheaton can also return kicks. i really wouldn't rule AB out yet. why take 1,000 return yards off the field?
