Ben has another year on his current contract, and I'm sure they'll get around to extending him this coming offseason for 4 or 5 years at roughly $20 million per year. I figure that he will begin to noticeably decline in about 3 years. But when you draft a QB high while you've already got one, it creates a stir, controversy, a distraction, has the potential to divide the locker room ... and worst of all, it's a squandered opportunity to add talent that can help your current QB win.

In other words, it's best to wait to draft a QB until AFTER we've decided Ben is done.

I agree with the 2nd part, but not the 1st part. We have a hard enough time focusing without a QB controversy.

Letting him play out his deal may be the smart move at this point. By the time the team around him is ready to compete, he may be in significant decline.

Ben's style of play isn't conducive to playing until 40. He's already not as elusive as he used to be, and that isn't going to get any better, nor will he ever fully buy into checking down and getting the ball out quickly.

I think GB made out ok taking Rodgers in first round and letting him sit a few years.

btw Ben is currently the 7th oldest player on our roster. 4 of the guys that are older are likely gone next season.

It created a lot of tension with Favre. They are better off now, but they weren't better off then. That team went from 10-6 in 2004 to 4-12 in 2005 after drafting Rodgers. Maybe one thing had nothing to do with the other, but do you think Favre and the other vets didn't resent GB pissing away a 1st rd pick on a future QB while they were busting their asses trying to win a Super Bowl?

Also Favre went from 30 TD & 17 INTs the year before to 20 TDs and 29 INTs that season.

I'd say that drafting Rodgers created issues.

It's just something to think about. QBs are somewhat different because they can play longer than most other positions, but some fans won't be happy with giving a huge new deal to the oldest player on the team.

You don't think that adding talent that would actually play would've improved their chances of success???

I only hope the STEELER get a chance to "piss away" a draft choice on a QB near Rodgers ability.

I would only hope that they wouldn't even consider it until they were done with the QB we've got. It's unfair to the players to spend high picks on long term projects.

Trophy ... as in 1. They may have won another trophy with Favre had they not spent a 1st rd pick on a QB, so they may or may not be ahead in the trophy count.

So I own a car I drive everyday. It runs ok. But once in a while it does break down. I have a chance to buy another car at a good price before the one I do own leaves me on the side of the road. Its a brand new car with very good reviews.Im getting it at a great price...You buying contract???......I am!!!!

Not a very good analogy. Chances are the car you had would be paid for and you should keep it. Professional contracts of his caliber will still have to be paid for years after they are retired or (dead on the side of the road).

That depends ... do you play to win or to perpetually compete? Everyone in the organization should be focused on winning. If you choose to lose today to improve your odds of winning at some point down the road, I'd rather not play with you or for you.

btw the Favre "car" was the most reliable car on any road.
