What are your thoughts on Reggie Nelson? I'm thinking we need a veteran FS to pair up with Mitchell because both have, " been there; done that" experience which would really help stabilize the inexperience we will have on the corners. We probably still need to add a safety from the draft but having Nelson to be (if nothing else) a comfortable plan B would be pretty decent.

Yes, on a 1 or 2 year deal with low guarantees. My guess is plenty of teams like him for a short term deal or fake long term contract with low up front money and the reason he hasn't been making visits is he's looking for something more. He's a good player.

He's probably content too to wait until after the draft.

Agreed. If all he's being offered are 1 or 2 year deals because of his age, he can wait and see if someone's priorities change after they don't fill a need at safety in the draft. He's way to talented not to find work in 2016 if he wants it.

Reggie Nelson "The Steeler Killer" ?

We should sign him just so he can't beat us on his own.

According to ESPN's Paul Kuharsky, the Titans have "touched base" with Nelson and several other free-agent safeties, though it doesn't sound like there was significant interest from both parties. Like pretty much every other team that's looked into Nelson, no one appears to be high enough on him that they're ready to offer a sizable contract.

It's surprising to see the lack of interest in Nelson around the NFL this offseason. He just tied the NFL lead with eight interceptions last year and even stated he wanted to come back to Cincinnati. The only other team to show real interest is the New York Giants, but not enough that a deal ever appeared close with them.

There has been speculation that the Bengals have already moved on from Nelson, though that may just be in the sense they're not open to bringing him back unless he drops his asking price. It's hard to believe the Bengals wouldn't bring Nelson back on a veteran minimum deal, though I doubt Nelson is willing to play for that.

Then again, is Nelson going to let his career end abruptly because he's not getting the contract he wants?

Per Spotrac, Nelson has earned $24 million over his career. If he's been relatively smart with his money, he shouldn't need to take anything near the vet min to risk further injury and wear & tear. I'm guessing that's part of his calculus.

Nelson would be a great pick up. Get him in here to win now and allow whoever we draft to sit a year or two and not have to start right away. He's a really good player even at his age, and if he could be had for a decent price I don't see why not

Not after having a career year leading the league with 8 picks he shouldnt have to play for vet min, he still has 3 or 4 years left in the tank and yet the steelers wont even talk to him about a contract, maybe tomlin just doesnt like his personality, something isnt jiving as bad as we need a starting DB who can play now......

Come on Colbert; pull the trigger on this one. This could be a key move in us reaching the super bowl.

Golden showed enough last season that he could be a legitimate starter if given the opportunity. With that said... Nelson would provide depth at FS. It would be a good move by the Steelers if they acquired him.

You start a guy like nelson at FS coming off of an 8 pick season with 77 tackles, and move mitchell to SS and the saftety positions will be really strong...

Yeah, if we snag Nelson he starts. We might not have a ton of interest due to his age, but if we really had as much interest in Weddle as we are led to believe then age shouldn't be an issue. Nelson would be a good pick up.

Nelson is a chemistry guy too. Meaning, he knows how to integrate within a unit and upgrade it to function as one. That's what a secondary is suppose to be about. He brings that. We need that. He'd be a great teacher while playing for us.

He reminds me of Ty Law with his ball hawking skills, and Law played for 15 years, so i'm not concerned about nelsons age, he has at least 3 years of productive football left in him.........

would love him, I think Steelers are in must win now mode, but I believe they are trying to get best value to be a contender these next 3 years.

Come on Colbert; We need a playmaker desperately like that in our secondary. What Nelson brings and can teach our people in the secondary is invaluable. He's worth the money when you factor in those intangibles.

Now I will not disagree with you on this. I like this idea, let's get him here and also he would have that chip on his shoulder when we play the Bunholes twice. I wish this would happen and still draft a youngster, I like Golden for depth but that's just about it.

Per Tomlin, we won't be looking for any FA DB help. See other Tomlin post.

Since when does the Steelers sign outside free agents who are as old as Nelson?
