Redman is a second string running back at best. He's only starting this season because of the injury to Mendy. If mendy is not back next season then they will draft or sign someone to start. I like Redman as do most here, but he is what he is. This over pimping of him is getting a little creepy if you ask me.

"I have always thought of Mendenhall as a open field runner"

Not me. The bastard always gets run down from behind whenever he does have the good fortune of breaking loose.

I'm comfortable with Redman starting, but I would like to see a heavy dose of someone else too. I don't think Redman is going to be our workhorse, but those are rare anymore anyway.

I think Dwyer could be a sleeper breakout candidate this season. I think this time next year we might be talking about Redman vs. Dwyer as one of the best camp battles.

More rotation in general would be a good thing, if our prospective RB talent turns out good in camp.

I would love for redman to accomplish these stats. But lets cross that bridge when we get to it.We have a few pieces to handle right now.

If you go by the roughly 60 offensive plays a game....and by what Hailey called up with Kurt Warner at QB (66% and 61% passing)...Ben will average about 36 pass attempts a game....and that leaves 24 running attempt.

If Redman gets all 24 a game.....he will have 384 carries and need to average almost 3.4/per carry.....I just don't see that....as even if he is the workhorse...he is going to be getting 3rd and Goal carries where he only gets 1 yard for the TD....or 3rd and inches where he buries his head into the hole for less than a yard...

Bettis averaged 3.9 for his career in a similar style......now consider that Redman will not get 384 carries....of those 24 carries a came...you could see Batch, Rainey, Dwyer grabbing maybe as many as 9 or 10 just giving Redman a rest...let alone as a scheme to get some speed on the edge.....and thats all before Mendenhall comes back...and possibly gets his job back

My guess for Redman.....240 carries at best...at about 3.6 a carry ...864 yards....10 TDs...and I will be ecstatic with that

Ben throws for a career high in yardage....maybe almost 4500....and the Steelers rank in the top 7 in scoring offense.

But obviously this is just all conjecture based on past statistics.

i see more yardage coming from our backs and TE's in the shorter passing game. we will see who the all around backs will be. i'm not counting clay out either. they were singing his praises during ota's and mini camp. somebody is going to be a tough cut this year.

I would guess that we will run more than that team did just because that team was an all out, air it out team... And I'm sure Haley was hired with somewhat of an understanding that we want to run the ball.

i don't know about more runs.

our backs will have more receptions. our new o-line should help the run though, so i'm not so sure as more running with haley but more efficient running and a ton more receiving from our backs.

I will respond directly to this and the 3.6 YPC you have above...Remdman already has a 4.4 average and over a 6.0 YPC average as a starter...So I use his stats that are closer to his starting stats...This seems just to me as the more times he gets the ball in non-obviuos run situations the greater the chance he breaks a 20 or 30 yarder......

Now when you add a new system that his skills match with better than the last system and add in what I consider 3 better OL....How in the world can you predict his average to drop that low?Again not his starting average his everybody in the world knows he is getting the ball, and 99% of the world knows where the play is going and 95 % of the time our OL are not executing the play..Plus we ranked in the bottom of the league with the PA pass....How can these things not lead to a potential upgrade in stats for Red?

So give Redman a .2 upgrade for being the starter and .2 for the new system and .2 for the new OL and a .2 for the correct use of the PA pass.....Thats almost another full YPC ....That would be almost a 5.5 YPC ,,,so there is nothing on paper or on film that would give me 1 ounce of insight that Redman's YPC will go down....

As stated in fact all signs point to a minimum of 5.5 YPC not even going off his starter stats,so to predict a 5.0 YPC is being very fair and objective...240 totes around 1200 yards.....That's around 15 totes a game at a 5.0 yard clip so if his totes go up just a fraction or his average is closer to the starter side he will get the 1300 yards easy....Who knows Haley may force the run at the GL and with Redman as the primary GL guy he could be closer to 20 TD'S than he is to 10 .....

I'll also throw in that it's insane to say Redman is underpaid. You have to do something before you get a big payday. Redman has played very well in spot duty but he's a backup until he proves otherwise.

The game has changed. Redman isn't explosive. He's just a big, bruising back without the huge play ability that teams now expect of their RB's. The days of a RB lining up and just running people over are gone. If Mendy doesn't reclaim his starting spot, the Steelers will bring someone else in next year, unless all the RB's can combine in a committee to get the job done. Redman may very well be a crucial piece of our offence, but he's not getting 20+ carries every game, nor is he getting 1,000+ yards and 10+ TD's.

somebody has to score for us. mendy and wallace were our scoring players last year. i hope he does get 10+ TD's but that will be a large task.

1,000 yards is not unlikely at all, IF he starts the whole season. If Mendenhall comes back by the midpoint and takes a significant amount of carries, then that seems unlikely.

10 TDs is not unlikely at all either. He's a great goal line back. I don't see why this is far-fetched.

Pwp...I'm not even looking at Redmans stats...I'm looking at the Bus and his 3.9 career..I'm looking ast Barry Sanders and his 5.0....even when barry hit 2000 he was at 6.1....Redman will be getting all the and goal carries that mendenhall got ....that is going to lower his total....I felt I was being generous saying close 900....thats a good season imo

I noticed in a lot of games this year Mendenhall's average would plummet in the 4th quarter if we had a lead. They'd just do their standard running play and miss the standard 2 or 3 blocks, and the other team would have 10 guys in the box, and it was like running into a wall. Whoever gets those carries will see a huge drop in average... hmm, then again, BA is gone and we have some better blockers, so maybe those carries won't be done quite so predictably and blocked so poorly.

I like Red alot, I think he is a big overachiever. The Steelers will be fair to Redman
when the time comes especially if he can produce. He is not a game changer,
he is a very servicable RB as our the rest of the Steelers RB's. The Steelers will never
break the bank on any Rb unless they find another sweetness out there somewhere.

Let the season play out first and see how Redman does as a starter, the Steelers don't need to pay big money to a rb they are a dime a dozen Mendenhall could be in his final year in 2012. First they need to sign Wallace and Brown to longterm deals.
