Plus the fact that Nate Herbig can start the season if said draft pick center comes in and needs some time to adjust.

Jackson Powers-Johnson or Zach Frazier would be on my wish list. Then a true Right Tackle.

Herbig is not a viable option. He has barely played the position as a pro and he had trouble with shotgun snaps when he did.

If you see Herbig in a Game at Center, things are not good.
Calling him a Center is like calling TJ a FG Kicker.

And that doesn’t exactly translate into

“It sounds like they will drafting a day 1 starter after listening to Tomlin yesterday.”

Slow guys taking a return the length of the field is rare. Russell was a slow guy by then, so that return was an anomaly, not an example of what is likely to happen with Patterson. Do you need visual aids and smaller words or are you able to follow the logic now?

(Before anybody else starts, please not who took this in a snide direction first.)

i think they go DB first and then either move up if need be in round two or they have a couple of options in mind for center. frazier or van pran or maybe they see a 3rd or 4th option as just as good. they did send the two top guys to georgia and they were heavy in michigan and bama. the kid from penn state as well. they will find a center and he will play between two vet guards. pouncey started with bad legs.

Not saying he will be the starter for the foreseeable future. They will draft a center on day one or day 2. I also don't believe they will trade for one.

Conner Williams ex Dolphin was on the rumor mill but he has had a major knee injury and is rehabbing and is on record he won't be signing with anyone soon.

I'm aware that the team is saying that Herbig is an option. It is a weak attempt to convince potential free agents and other teams that they don't have a desperate need at the position.

If for some reason the Steelers whiff on getting a center in the first 3 rounds, Hunter Nourzad from Penn State would be a solid pick in round 4. He's 6'3" and 320 and has played all across the OL. He played RT his freshman year at Cornell and LT there his sophomore year in which he was named the Ivy League lineman of the year. Nourzad then transferred to Penn State and played LG his junior year and then started and played center in all of the Nittany Lions games last year.

they carry 3 center capable centers anyway. if herbig is one then fine but i don't think he is going to be the main plan. weidl does like him but he may just be an option they are floating to have depth and competition at the position. he is not brand new to the position. i do remember at least two years we got to our 3rd center in a season during a game. herbig and mccullom will be that depth if need be. on game day, herbig will be the interior backup, so he better have some reps at center just incase.

Good, quality #3 RB and special teams player. Steelers have one of the best RB rooms in the NFL.

I am assuming you are talking in Preseason, or maybe practice?

I do Agree with you on the main point: Mason Cole took every single snap last year 100% at center. That is how much they think of Herbig playing center.

No, he played some center during the regular season earlier in his career.

He is multi talented for sure. Also has wide receiver skills. And is a vet presence that Smith has coached.

He is also 33-years-old and he only touched the ball 66 times in 2023, including seven kickoff returns.
