They didn't exactly ignore the secondary. They drafted guys they thought would fit the "system", but they took them late thinking they didn't need high draft choices for what they were asking them to do. In hindsight, didn't pan out.

2015/16 they took a guy relatively high and another one to develop late. One was hurt before mini-camp and the other did get out there very late and looked like he might be good for the next year, They also acquired a couple in FA via trades. Colbert did that and the coaches for whatever reason kept trotting out a hurt guy that couldn't tackle.

If you think that's fine to count the 2015 season and have Colbert there while you have Ozzie in the top 5 after the season they put up there and his troubles with secondary talent, RB talent, WR talent, O-line talent.....just saying.

Every person is only human. Plus, injuries no one can foresee. With that said, Ozzie had a terrible 2015 season. But I include both Colbert's & Ozzie's 2015 season in my thinking. And it's obvious the article I posted from an unbiased sports guy did the same thing. Colbert got a couple of new guys where one was injured, the other was nothing and our secondary was left in the lurch again.

But again, if these guys were so great, why is Tomlin/Colbert out looking at every cornerback and safety that they can see??? Because they don't believe in those cornballs either.

The Ravens were taken out by a rash of injuries which again, no one can foresee. I can't hang injuries on any GM. But of course I wasn't upset by the Ravens being hit like that. :)

Also factoring in the way Ozzie swooped in and took Maxx Williams from Colbert too in the draft, you have to say in recent history, Ozzie has outperformed Colbert. And embarrassed Colbert too. Can Colbert recover? Absolutely he can. We have an unusually deep run of cornerbacks in this year's draft. He can take one at # 25 and significantly upgrade the talent at the weakest part of our team. And somewhere afterwards, he has to address the safety position as well.

But, if he goes about business like he did last year, picking subpar, bottom barrell cornerback left overs, we most likely will get the same results we got last year. And that's the bottom line for us this year.

NO REAL SECONDARY UPGRADES IN TALENT, NO SUPERBOWL APPEARANCE. It's that simple. Now if you think any different then that, your fooling yourself. Fix the secondary and then handle everything else in the priority pecking order.

Well technically you're NOT at a loss for words because you came up with those words. But I digress. LOL! As for Colbert, I think being a GM is more about being a "manager" than a guy that finds the greatest talent of all time at all times. Have we had some HORRIBLE drafts? Yes. BUT we've also found AB in the late rounds, sealed a VERY team friendly deal with him which has proven to be of GREAT value to the team. We've also found Le'Veon Bell and he is easily the best all around back in the game. We've also let Mike Wallace walk when another GM was willing to give him Scrooge McDuck money only to trade him for next to nothing less than two years later. We've also picked up a very talented WR in Bryant and if he wasn't a blithering idiot he would be bound for superstardom as well. Is it Colbert's fault that the guy is a moron? I suppose an argument can be made that he should have stayed away but the potential reward was worth the risk at what point in the draft we took him. Has the defense fallen away greatly? Yes. No doubt. At least the secondary has. But we've lost some truly great players and they're tough to replace for ANY GM. So while I don't think Colbert is perfect I also realize tons of teams would love to have had a Ben, Troy, Heath, AB, Bell, Harrison (in his prime), Woodley (when he was in shape), and even a lot of great role players we've had over the years under Colbert. So that's my two cents.

Actually, now that I think about it, the writer is correct. The reason? Colbert had a chance to take Steven Jackson WAY past his prime and passed on him. Whereas, the best GM in the game took him and went one game further in to the post than we did. All you idiots that aren't considering this can thank me later.

This team is 2 DBs away from being a Super Bowl favorite. You don't get that way with a bad GM.

 Talking about his entire body of work Dean!

Ok, so, even if we play it your way and grade him year to year, you must agree he was the 6th rank GM in 2014 then? Waiting.

Wow. Now I'm at a loss for words.

 This debate is getting fun to watch in kind of the same way that some people watch auto racing to see crashes.

The whole Maxx Williams thing was debunked as a bunch of :bscow: during last year's draft. It was just one dope on one of the networks covering the draft speculating that the Ravens may have thought the Steelers wanted Williams, and jumping them. The :bscow: then took on a life of its own.

The other big rumor involving the Steelers on night 2 of the draft was that they were trying to trade all the way up to the 1st pick of the 2nd round. There was of course rampant speculation on who they would have been targeting had that been the case, though I later read something that suggested that they were considering trading up for Golson because they didn't think he'd fall to them. Is that :bscow: too? Probably. I think 90% of the speculation and "inside sources are saying" kind of stuff that comes out during the draft is :bscow:.

But hey, keep citing :bscow: if it makes you feel better.

I'm judging based on the last 5 years. Not just 2015 or 2014. In a 5 year vacuum. But for argument sake, let's throw out 2015 and just judge from 2011-14 seasons. You had Colbert who decided to extend old guys too long and jack up our cap for many years. As well as not fix the secondary. Now did Colbert do some good things? Absolutely. He's in nooooo way a terrible GM. I just want him to focus on his couple of blind spots and fix those.

I tend to agree about some of the contracts and playing loose with salary cap but I don't think you can fault the team or KC with dealing with differing priorities the last five years. Each year the challenges are different and getting to the 53 is a challenge. I think we would all have liked them to focus some higher draft pics on the secondary but the reality is where they picked, talent level, team needs, and cap issues have more to do with when and how the secondary has been addressed rather than the GM

I just found it amusing the way you reacted to TTF's comment but when I submit a different ranking, you dismiss it out of hand :smiley1:

Like I said, it's opinions. Really really really can't refute that.

I didn't dismiss it; I just said it didn't include the 2015 season. Which is included in the rankings that I had. Your's lacked a year's worth of data.

But at the time, he was supposedly the best TE in the draft and we were zeroed in on him until the Ravens swooped in a pick before us. Then Colbert tried to pretend like Williams was 5th on his draft board. LOL.

You also said even without the 2015 data, he still isnt a 6th rated GM. But clearly that author thinks he is.

Meanwhile, the article you posted has Ozzie ranked high and his 2015 season sucked ass. But you give him a pass because of injuries even know we had significant injuries too but somehow managed to finish with a winning record and make the playoffs.

Face it, you just found an article that supports your view of Colbert, means nothing more than that. Even if you take Colbert out of the equation, the author of your article is still an idiot based on where he ranked the other GM's.

Even of any of that is true, which its not, so freaking comical but anyway, even if true, you should be glad Colbert was "duped". Did you really want Maxx over Dupree?

Maxx was an extremely overhyped TE in a ridiculously weak class. Steelers knew this, never would have taken him and certainly not with numerous players still on the board with better grades, better grades at position of need no less.

I'm just thankful Ozzie was dumb enough to trade up to get him :lolol:

Not true...I was just going to my usual website (rotoworld) and there it was. I was surprised that they had the same opinion as I did about Colbert. But then again, they are not homers. Their giving an objective view like I do. Love my team but when the GM is doing B- to grade C work, I've got to say it.

Well, the book isn't finished. Williams could have a big year. You never know. And Colbert had every intention of taking Williams. You can pretend all you want but Williams is who he wanted. But...I like your blind loyalty and fanaticism.

How is that blind loyalty when neither of you know what the real truth is and all you have to go on is what everyone that was in the draft room said about what happened, debunking that they had Williams in mind?
