If you include pending free agents, add additional players that equal 10 minus the free agents.

    1. Tj Watt
    2. Cameron Heyward
    3. Najee Harris
    4. Minkah Fitzpatrick
    5. Pat Friermuth
    6. Chris Boswell
    7. Dionte Johnson
    8. Cameron Sutton
    9. Alex Highsmith
    10.Chase Claypool (by default)

The first five were easy, but then I had to mentally go through the starters and eliminated about 7-8 immediately. I would put JuJu Smith-Schuster and Joe Haden in the top ten if they resigned. A healthy and playing Tuitt would have been top 5.

That's about it really. I mean other teams you might struggle to get 10, but we are definitely thin in many areas.

I doubt I could come up with 10 I care to recognize

So different from when we had Ward, Troy, the beard, Aaron Smith, Farrior, Joey Porter, Ryan Clark, Heath, Harrison, etc.

That list is as good as it gets. I worry Cam is getting a tad bit old. I don't think the Steelers keep Haden just because of age.

Wow, what a change. During the 70's when you named the top 10 players on the team, they were all future Hall of Famers.

This was harder than I thought......I did 10 even though 8-10 probably wouldnt make the top ten on any other team.

Probably so, but it was just hard for me to put a kicker in the "top 10 players on the team" list. Bos is one of the best kickers in the league though, love him.

Move Joe Haden to 8 and Cam Sutton to 10 and you hit the nail on the head. I fully believe Haden wants to, and will be brought back.

Chase Claypool does not belong on this list.

If I think about this I group players in buckets:

    a. Amongst the best players in the league
    b. Amongst the best players at their position in the league (top 3 or 4 at their position)
    c. A very good player at their position in the league (top 5-8 or so)
    d. Above average player at their position in the league. (top dozen or so)
    e. Everyone else.

Using that I would group the current team

    1. Watt (bucket a)
    2. Cam (bucket b)
    3. Minkah (bucket c)
    4. Boz (bucket c)
    5. DJ (bucket d)
    6. Muth (bucket d, barely)
    7. Suttom (bucket d, barely)

That's it. everyone else is sort of a bucket e player.

Muth was the one I struggled with. The kid has a lot of potential including the chance to end up a bucket b player, but he's not there now. Based on targets and catches, he ranks around 12-15th in the league. He was 6th in TEs in TDs. This isn't a knock on him. That's just the reality now and he's just starting.

Not a bad list but Boswell needs to be on the list.

I do understand but remember this, FG kickers score the most points in the NFL .

those are some crazy high bucket lists. Having 7 players on your team that are among the top 12 players in the league at their positions would be incredibly good for any team. Plus you have the disparity in position. The 12th TE would be a fairly average player, while the 12th WR or 12th DE would be incredibly good players for their position. An average starter at the WR position would be somewhere in the 30's in the league. The average #1 receiver might be around #15, but an average #1 is still a fairly elite player vs someone who is actually just an average receiver since he is the average of the BEST WR's on each team rather than the average of all WR's on each team.

Average starters on solid contracts are kinda what pulls teams together. Guys like Edmunds, Highsmith, etc... or more from the past 5-10 years or so guys like V. Williams, Ramon Foster, William Gay, Larry Foote etc. Even some of our best teams would have a hard time finding more than 7 players that we would consider top 12ish at their respective position. However, we dont have enough of the average/solid guys on the roster right now... filling out starting slots with below par players was a huge issue this year. Hopefully we use our offseason to fix this situation with our FA money and getting our picks right in the draft again.
