Unless the next new thread in here is "Peyton Manning is a 49er", I'm not sure that it matters. Alex Smith had some solid receivers last year in Davis, Ginn, and Crabtree.

Edit: Okay, Ginn didn't catch a single touchdown. I think that he would do just fine if he played for the Chargers rather than the 49ers.

Ginn has turned more into a returner and a very good one. His absence cost the 49ers big time against the Giants.

I'm not convinced of that. The fumble was a fluke play that could have happened to anyone. If you want to play "What if...?" with the possibilities of Ginn giving them better field position, then I could argue that the 49ers would have scored more, forcing Eli Manning to have to win a shootout, which favors the Giants. He would have to take more risks with his throws, but he played pretty well last season. I think that they could have won a 38-34 type of game.

I was thinking more about the fact that Kyle Williams had two fumbles. You're right though that the 'what ifs' in games are endless.

WR is one of their biggest needs. Crabtree is alright, but he can't carry a receiving corps. He's needs help. I think he's more like a strong #2 than a true #1. At most he's a co-#1, but he needs help from more than just Davis. Morgan is gone. Ginn is a returner and "specialist" on the field, good for end-arounds and that kind of thing. You'd think even with poor hands he'd be more of a deep threat, but he's not really. Williams might be a good #3. Moss might be a complete bust for all we know. I think anything they get from him will be a bonus (maybe they just want someone to throw fades to from inside the 5 yard line?).
