I work with a hardcore Raiders fan who told me today that he got fired. I didn't know it hadn't actually happened yet. I said "who is gonna be the new coach?" and he said "John Gruden" and I thought he was full of crap but on NFLN just now they said that Gruden is a name that keeps popping up. I say there is absolutely no way this happens. I mean no way whatsoever. They should call Marty. I would like to see if he can still coach.

Raiders fans are already complaining about Woodley. One solo tackle, two assists and no sacks.

Well at least we did the right thing. Also the Raiders wanted him to put on even MORE weight! I'm guessing they are wishing they hadn't said that now. However, I'm sure Woodley's check makes him feel better about his performances. I honestly hate how far he has fallen because I've always really liked him when he was healthy.

The Raiders will now have their 11th head coach since 1995 and only one (Gruden) has a winning record there. The Steelers have had 3 coaches since 1969. I'll take the Rooney way.

from what I've heard, they fired him over the phone too.. imho that is just totally classless, and if the f.o. can't show any class, what exactly would they expect from anyone under them (players included)

There's no right or wrong way of doing things. It's so annoying when people say this. If you have the right guy, then he deserves to stay until he's no longer the right guy for the job. If you hired the wrong guy in the first place, then keeping him around for 20 years won't make him the right guy. Keeping the wrong guy is just as stupid as firing the right guy. Obviously the Raiders have huge problems and they've probably fired some guys that deserved to stick around for a while, but keeping a coach around for 20 years isn't the right move if he's not the right guy for the job

There most certainly is. You even said in your post the Raiders probably fired guys that deserved more of a chance. I'd say the Raiders have pretty much done everything the wrong way and the proof of that is pretty apparent.

Totally classless and yet another example of doing things the wrong way.

You misunderstood me. I meant keeping a coach for 20+ years isn't the wrong or the right way. Neither is firing a coach after 5 years. Both could be the right way and both could be the wrong way, it all depends on the coach. Like I said, keeping the wrong guy for 20 years is just as stupid as firing the right guy after 2 years. Assuming Dennis Allen wasn't the right guy for the job, then keeping him on for another 10 years won't suddenly make him the right guy. That's what I meant by there is no right or wrong way. What's right in one situation might be wrong in another situation. It needs to be decided on a case by case basis.

Any coach the Raiders hire is immediately at a disadvantage because of the team vision the Davis family clings to. Much like the Rooney's team vision of a tough defense and powerful run game, the Davis family believes in a vertical passing attack and want a devastating defense much like Madden's teams of the 70's. Until they break from that firm belief they will continue to implode because they draft the wrong guys in an attempt to capture lightening in a jar. Add to that a fan base that expects every Raider to as bada&& as Jack Tatum or Howie Long and guys just aren't that way anymore. Can you imagine the outcry in Pittsburgh if the Rooney's hired a guy from the Bill Walsh coaching tree who wanted to run a West Coast Offense?

There would be outrage, until we started winning, then we'd quickly fall in love with the system. Winning cures everything

Some coaches do seem to hang on forever without winning anything like Wes Unseld with the Bullets ... For the Raiders, I was thinking about coaches like Tom Cable who went 8-8 his second year, 6-0 in the division and he go fired.

Interestingly enough, Tomlin is part of Walsh's coaching tree.
