The article basically laughs at the fact that anyone would trade for him since he'll be released... However depending on what his contract looks like (I have no idea), giving the Raiders a 7th rounder might not be a bad idea. You don't have to compete with other teams for him.

Is it possible to make a trade for a conditional pick that could be nothing? Meaning if he hits some sort of snap count, weeks on the roster, etc. then it's a 6th rounder but if we cut him in camp they get nothing? Just wondering...

His contract is probably quite large being a top 10 pick. He'd have to completely re-do his deal if they traded for him. I'm not sure of all the technicalities of it...but I don't see it happening.

His contract: $4.005 million in 2013; $5.805 million in 2014. plus a 250k workout bonus each year.

He's pretty much untradable and the Raiders can't afford to keep him. He'll be released soon.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, then he's not worth trading for...

He is not completely untradeable....its more on him and his agent....... A team could make the trade under the provision he restructures.

Lets say the Steelers, Ravens or Pats....offer a conditional 7th round in 2014....based on the fact that he is on the roster week 16 of the 2013 season.

Then McClain and his agent take all of that 4 mill but the min. as a roster bonus first day of the Official 2014 season...keep in mind he has already got a buttload of cash from Oakland as a part of his $23 mill signing bonus.

While that makes sense for the team that brings him in...doesn't make sense for McClain and his agent...unless they want to "pick their spot" If he proves himself (which he should be betting on) that team will resign/extend and he will get his signing bonus plus cash on his next contract.

I doubt McClain wants to end up on "another Raider team" ....so if he truly wants an opportunity on a contender...something like that could be moved around....if he proves himself...he now has a shot at a ring....if they cut him...he then can just shop himself to the highest bidder.....or he can just wait out the raiders to cut him...and sign where he wants....the problem is the Raiders are in no hurry to dump him.....they will hold onto him until the FA waters are dry...and his options are few.

PROS FOR BOTH: A team that trades for him under a restructured contract gets to kick the tires for a year without having to give him any kind of signing bonus, and he gets to have more control over where he goes and can be gone from the Raiders now.

CONS FOR BOTH: McClain doesn't get more guaranteed money right now...and is effectively betting on himself being a better player with a better team around him. If he will restructure year 1 on new team....very little.

PROS AND CONS FOR RAIDERS: Raiders are on the hook for over 7mill on him in 2013 no matter trade or cut....they are screwed...and are just hoping to get something for him.....its not common in the NFL...but I am sure a restructure sign and trade could be worked out since all parties want this done.

I say 'why not' on McClain, especially if he can be had with minimal salary cap implications. Cliche number 1 - One man's trash may be another man's treasure. Cliche number 2 - A change in scenery may serve him well. Hindsight is 20/20, but I sure wish we would have gambled on Burfict last year. He proved to be a nice steal by the Bengals. Anybody stuck in Oakland's quagmire of below mediocrity is destined to at some point develop a 'bad attitude.' I'm with Hack...lets keep this guy on our radar and maybe bring him into camp. What's the harm?

I have been on top of the McClain thing since training camp last year....He could have been had then for a 7th rounder...could have kicked his tires for a year...for about $500,000 and cut him if he was not working out....I thought he would have been 1000 times better to have around than Sly last season.
