Obviously, Troy made a huge mistake on the first Patriot TD.

But on the TV replays, I see 2 Patriot WRs (Amendola & Dobson) running down the left side, and Gay was the only Steeler trying to cover (both of) them. What the hell was that?

The steelers think he is so good that he can cover two players?

I don't know but Brady knew he could fool Troy by looking him off and once again Troy guessed wrong.

I noticed they seemed to pin the entire thing on Troy, like he left a man wide open just to try and read Brady's eyes. Ridiculous.

The truth is that he was the only deep safety, and he had to pick ONE side because sitting in the middle with nobody coming to him wasn't going to help. Brady did a good job looking him off, and yeah, I'd say the bigger problem was that we had ONE cornerback going with the TWO downfield receivers. Unless Troy was secretly in man coverage on the slot guy, which he definitely didn't seem to know, then I'm pretty sure it was Cortez Allen that blew it on that play. Troy did what safeties do (they are extra players and aren't psychic, guessing and reading eyes is all they have). Ike had his guy, Gay had his guy, Timmons had his guy, Troy assumed Allen had his guy. Or should he just double up on one guy all game? Nothing predictable about that, and I'm sure you all would love it and not complain about it. It was a busted coverage by Allen, end of story.

Horrible announcing by Simms leads others (above) to believe otherwise, but we should be pretty numb to that by now.

they gave up 55 points and your curious as to what happened on the 1st td?

how about the other 48 points they gave up?

the defense stinks. there are a million reasons as to why those guys were left wide open.

this is just not a good football team. they are not a well coached team and they are old on defense. putting young talented guys in isnt going to change things.

i know DL is god to most people around here, but its time to open your eyes and see that his zone blitz defense doesnt work in this league anymore. the offenses are too fast and his exotic blitzes cant get to the qb fast enough. qbs get the ball out so fast now that it just doesnt work. couple that with their dbs playing 10 yards off the wrs and thats why they gave up 55 points.

This is so vague, it is meaningless. Kind of like "they should run it more", without any additional information.

That's what I wanted to know, thanks Snack.
From the replay, there were a few Steelers hanging around the short middle of the field. Couldn't tell if a DB should have run with the receiver (like Allen), or other players should have reacted.

The defensive scheme has worked in the past when the opposing team was confused about what the defense was doing. Now it seems like the Steelers are confused, and the opposing team can ignore the misdirection because someone is wide open.

I agree that Troy had the middle of the field, the problem is he jumped the crossing route completely ignoring his deep responsibilty. That left 2 receivers with 1 defender and brady made him pay! That was all on Troy 100%. Troy also gambled a couple of other plays throughout the game and came up empty. I love Troy but that was perhaps the worst game I have ever seen him play.

    :this!:

It it is easy to armchair criticize when we don't know what was supposed to be happening. Same applies to interceptions sometimes - often the QB's fault, but also the route runner is a contributing factor. This is a team game, and tough to single out one person from an uninformed spectator's point of view.

What we do know us that from a team perspective, the Steelers are pretty bad.

Troy might of left his deep responsibility but someone had to have underneath coverage on that one. Gay was the only cornerback covering two receivers. It had to be someone covering the slot guy and they blew it.

We've been going with this one-deep-safety thing for most of the season. I haven't noticed DL use this as much in previous seasons, but maybe I that's just me? Either way, it seems to be causing a fair few problems for us...

You know I wonder what was going through Gay's head as they were heading down field and he realized he was the only guy trying to cover both Patriot receivers. There must have been a moment where he was just like "Aw *bleep* this is gonna be bad."
