You will have no problem getting a cab after the Steelers game. They may be waiting right at the gate for you. If not, then just walk to the nearest avenue.

First off you never HAVE to drink and drive.... Ever.

It's not too hard to get a cab if you take the ferry back from the game to Station Square and grab a cab there. I've never tried to get one directly from the Stadium, so I can't help you there, but I highly recommend taking the ferry, it really adds to the game day experience.

Cost of a cab would obviously depend on how far away your hotel is.

    .....

I just reserved a room at the Best Western Parkway they said they have a shuttle that will drop me off where I can get a ferry over to the stadium for $5. Is that the ferry you're talking about?

I believe they have a shuttle that will take you directly to the stadium and back. He is talking about the Station Square Ferry which would be a bit out of the way but adds to the overall experience.
Either way don't drink and drive. It's simply not worth it especially for an out of towner where you would have to return for a much more unpleasant experience.

Yeah, you're gonna cab through the Fort Pitt Tunnel to Station Square. From there you'll catch The Clipper (the ferry) to the stadium. I often go out of my way and park at Station Square's parking garage, and take The Clipper over to the game because it's a pretty cool experience. It drops you off right at the main steps leading up from the river to Heinz Field's main gates. After the game, you just return to where you were dropped off and catch The Clipper back to Station Square. From there, you should easily be able to hail a cab (probably your best bet being right outside the Sheraton hotel).

Side note: one of the worst malls in America (it's flagship store being a K-Mart) is located right near your Best Western hotel (literally a .4 mile walk). It's the Parkway Center Mall. Total dump, but they've got a pretty good Steelers store in there where you can pick up any of a variety of shirts, jerseys, Terrible Towels, hats, and all kinds of odds and ends. I think it's worth checking out.

Yep, that's the one. I think the previous posters covered the rest of the info?

    Have fun! :herewego:

That seems odd they'd go to station square which would take longer to get to than to get to the stadium....I've heard people talking about a number of them going to the stadium...and i thought that was one of them. Also the boat ride is like 10-15 bucks round trip. Also unless you leave before the game is over be prepared for a potential long wait to get on the boat to ride back.

We used to park there and ride the boats over the but the costs of parking plus the boat ride was just adding up. So now we park downtown near the RC Bridge and pay $5-10 to park and enjoy an awesome walk over to the stadium (I know thats not an option for you not driving and all, but just sharing).

Beer is $7.50 inside the stadium, plus beer sales end at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Its pretty simple to me, do your drinking BEFORE the game and dry out during.

I don't know that Station Square would take longer to get to (via the Fort Pitt Tunnel) than the stadium. I guess it depends on how close to game time he's traveling. It can become a real custerfluck once you get down by the casino, thousands of people walking around, North Shore Drive being halted by pedestrians, etc . . .

You're right though about The Clipper's fees. I think it was like $7 one way or $10 round-trip the last time I went. It could certainly be in the $10-$15 round-trip range. Still, sitting in traffic in a cab watching the numbers spin . . . and he doesn't have to pay for parking at Station Square since he's cabbing over so there's that.

If he's not into The Clipper, perhaps he could cab to the casino and walk over and then get a cab at the casino after the game. Still, trying to get out of there with 70,000 people trying to leave Heinz at the same time . . . a cab leaving from Station Square would be able to avoid the tunnel traffic and go around the west side towards Crafton and Parkway Center is the next exit on the 79 North . . .

And, yeah, the wait for a return ride to Station Square via The Clipper CAN be a bit of a wait. But, what's the hurry? I'm usually the last one to leave the stadium so by the time I'm down at the landing, I only have to wait for a boat or two (don't two boats generally run on gameday?). Besides, Station Square is a pretty decent post-game spot to hang out and get more drinks on (Bar Louie, Lone Star, Buckhead, etc).

Option A would be to take The Clipper and experience that.

Option B would be to cab to the game (you want to tailgate which means you want to get there very early which means traffic shouldn't be an issue). Then, if you're not flying out immediately after the game, head over to Bettis Grille or Tilted Kilt or Mullens or wherever and drink up while traffic clears. There'll be cabs passing through there at some point.

Prearrange for a cab company before hand, and they will pick you up
where you want to be picked up at. Unlike NYC/Chicago you just can't hail a cab in the City of PGH,
there is just not that many unlike above.

I was talking just in general to get to those points...obviously game traffic changes any and everything around town...ya never know what you will run into and where you will run into it. Obviously on game day depending when it is and which way the shuttle was to go would impact the time factor. I just found it odd the shuttle wouldnt go all the way...being they're going that far anyways...its the first I've heard of a hotel shuttle going there versus the stadium (not saying others dont...but still, haha).

Yeah it seems like every couple years the Gateway company would raise the prices...one reason we stopped taking them.
I'm not sure if I'd recommend a regular cab to even go to the Casino (not sure I'd recommend a cab period for anything on game day, haha). As back when the Casino first opened we used to park there going in over the West End Bridge...and the traffic sucked almost as bad as some of the other main entrances into the area. So taking a cab in could be costly as you said before stuck there with the dial turning and all eating up money. As far as a cab leaving Station Square...if the Wabash Tunnels are open they'd be out of there in no time...but going up to the West End area could run into a bunch of traffic still. I mean shoot if they'res going to be going out of Station Square they might as well take that Hotel Shuttle not a cab.

And yeah if you're not in a hurry afterwards (and its not freezing cold/etc) then waiting for the boat ride back wouldn't be an issue...but a lot of people are impatient/etc and dont like waiting...thats why I pointed it out in case they are one of those people, haha. And yeah they usually have at least 2 sometimes all the boats running.

But all in all...depending how many are going with them to the game...the cheapest way could be for them would probably be take the hotel shuttle to Station Square...take the boats and over and back and be done with it. If they're more than just 1 person going...just make sure to advise the others to have boat money to pay their ways.
