Trubisky has the 15 highest cap hit of any Qb this Year. Is He worth that...will they resign him, and change that....should they????

Well no clear cut QB #3 behind Mitch. Omar and Tomlin and company all talk Mitch up, everybody likes Mitch (expect for a lot of Steelers fans)
Personally I don't hate Mitch, Mitch can give you a good chance at going .500 over 4-5 games if needed (which is what you want out of back up-QB), just don't think you want him full time starting.

I think your other option is to dump Mitch and re-sign Mason, but I think Mitch is a better guy to keep around another year at too much money, because A.) Mitch would be a better back up than Rudolph
    even at more money
B.) Mitch is a better guy to lean on from a Pro standpoint in development for Kenny than Mason.

I really only mention Mason as that be a cost saving move, and he knows the Steelers system as he has been here 5 years.

Wouldn't shock me to see Mitch return on a new deal after next year as back up.

This isn't about a Trubisky like , or hate. This is about our backup who lost more games than He won, and had more ints than tds being the 15th highest Qb cap hit in the whole dang NFL. 17 other NFL starters, and countless other backups are cheaper. That's all. So do they resign Him ,and make it cheaper???

They really don't have another option for No. 2 quarterback. There isn't much left in the free agent pool, so they are stuck with him for at least the 2023 season.

Can't they resign Him for a longer deal, and drop the cap Hit, or is that not possible???
I only ask because I don't really know how that works exactly.

Yes, but he has to be willing to extend and reduce the cap hit. If he accepts being a backup for the next few years, a deal could be done. If he wants to play out this season and hit free agency in 2024, there’s no incentive for him to extend at a backup level contract.

OK. Thanks. I figured it was something like that, or I believe they would have done something already.

That isn't much of a threat, especially when it is so easy to see that they don't have another viable option to be their backup quarterback.

Well I thought that but I don’t think that will force the Steelers hand

Right now they don’t seem to be afraid to make moves and there are still a bunch of unemployed backup quarterbacks

Who is left that is actually a viable option?

Mason Rudolph? He won't come back. Teddy Bridgewater? You better have a good third-stringer behind him. Matt Ryan? Is he allowed to take a walker out there with him? Carson Wentz? LOL

No. I think he had a tryout with the Helsinki Roosters of the Scandinavian League but they didn't sign him. They decided to go with Jack Mehoff the lefty from Copenhagen instead.

It's a dang shame with what happened to Dwayne Haskins. The Steelers could be in a much better QB situation right now had he not been involved with many bad decisions that fateful day.

It is a shame for many reasons. That is well down the list.

That said, I'm not sure he would still be with the organization, though perhaps they would have cut Rudolph instead.

Hell has frozen over; STD wants to nail down Trubisky to a multi year deal. :)

I am sure if the Steelers wanted to take the $8 million in salary and turn it into a Signing Bonus on a 3-year deal Mitch would be OK with that. Mitch may have come to the conclusion that his Franchise QB Days are over, and he is just looking for a soft place to land; like Charlie Batch did.

The Steelers missed the late round QBs, as all the ones they were looking at were taken in the 5th and 6th rounds. Not counting the cannon fodder UDFA they just signed, it still is going to be interesting to see who they bring in for the #3 QB slot. But with Mitch as the #2, they may just go with 2 QBs on the active roster and have their 3rd on the practice squad.

He and I have both been in lock step on this. We don’t hate him as a person or player at back up. But his back up salery needs to be lower or they could (could-HAVE) spent about half his cap hit on another or better free agent at another needed position. Like SS or ILB when there would have been more availabilty.

So lock him up for a few more years at 2nd string and extend his career with a good team he now knows for an appropriate back up contract. Not a starting bridge/prove-it contract.

He needs to see now that starting positions are not in his future. Why not be the #2 here?
