How is it that we have an organization where the players and coaches have years of experience at this one thing... they are professionals, but the people who are expected to officiate the rules are part time participants at best.

It's embarrassing to see these guys screw up SO many calls in different games, it's gotten so bad that they are affecting the outcome of games. The rules are so complex that Periera made a comment some time ago about still learning the intricacies of the rules... the guy was the flipping head of officials!!!

Look how many calls went against each time from the Pit/Cin game today, and look how the officiating is going in the Seattle game. It's embarrassing, it's affecting the outcome of games, and it's taking away the violence that makes football FOOTBALL!

    IHRG!

The refs have been pathetic this season. I honestly think they are relying on instant replay too much.

not sure if your reffering to a particular play or not, but that call against Miller that took away a td was horrible.

Am I the only one that thought the hit to Heath's head on the second drive should have been flagged? His head actually snapped back. I couldn't believe he held onto the ball and managed to get up! I LOVED his reaction when he got up! :rawk:

Something has to be done and soon .I've been watching football for over 30 years and the officiating the past few has been getting progressively worse,to the point where they are adversely affecting the outcome of games. With all the money that the NFL makes there is no excuse not to have a professional crew. The first thing they should do is change the PI penalty to a 15yd, like in college. How is offensive PI a 10yd penalty but defensive is a spot foul. The calls are too inconsistent from game to game or even play to play.Nothing bothers me more than to see a team bailed out on a deep pass by a ticky tack PI call ,some teams have those plays as a part of their offense.I think changing this one rule alone would help to keep the refs from deciding who wins and loses.

I can't argue that some of the rules don't make sense and certainly there are calls and non-calls that happen every week that make us spectators scratch our heads.
That said, I find it hard to really bash the officials and undermine what they do and what it takes to be one. I don't recall where I saw it, but there was a bit on the life of an offical last year and these guys are required to put a tremendous amount of time and effort into it and the pay back is really very little....then they have the fans on top of it. Quite honestly I don't know why anyone in their right mind would ever want to be an official.

No, I said the same thing to my wife when that happened. I watched 3 different games yesterday, including the Steelers game, and for the most part in a couple of those games it was like you could expect a flag to be thrown on just about every 2nd or 3rd play, but then plays like this get nothing.

Okay...good. I thought maybe I was becoming ultra sensitive to flag throwing. A little consistency would be GREAT! :frustrated: And if that player gets fined for that hit, I am gonna be pissed.

    And fines.

I think it has more to do with the fact that "tightening" the rules has in fact introduced much more scope for interpretation of each play. The result: inconsistency.

And having watched the replay several times, I still can't see why the flag was thrown on Miller.

What you said is exactly what I think is the issue. Too much is asked of these guys with too little return. If we had a no kidding professional officiating core, they could devote their time to just football, and get a respectable/legitimate return for it.

the officials should be full time
and they should all be getting together 1-2 days a week to watch film and go over what they called and why
its the only way to get them on the same page

I actually do not want professional officials but do want the officials to be more professional. Just look at the MLB and NBA and tell me if those officials are any better than the NFL's.

Since I am an official (in another sport) I feel I can add a bit here.

The NFL officials are by far and away the best officials in professional sports. There is not contest IMO.

Few realize that they have to pass a physical running test before the season starts that none of the other officials have to. Baseball has their share of rotund umpires that can't get out of their way.

As for the appearance that these officials are worse this year, it could be right. But folks need to remember that these guys are being told how to officiate the game by the NFL. The NFL is giving them the guidelines to work with. If the NFL is saying hitting a defenseless receiver is a penalty then that is they way they are going to call it. They are going to error on the side of calling vs not calling. If you saw the Baltimore game yesterday, this was a good example of the officials throwing the baby out with the bath water. The Seahawks have nothing to complain about with the Steelers after watching them get called for 6 penalites in 10 plays.

I do not think it is so much on replay as I think it is the league dictating what they want called. These guys have to report to the league and no one wants to be called in on Monday to explain what was going on in their game.

If history serves me correctly, it is pretty SRO for the Steelers to get calls and letters a few times a year saying an official blew a call. It happens folks. These guys are not perfect and one has to realize that in today's game, there are cameras everywhere as opposed to 20 years ago. Every play is analysied in slow, super slow and regular motion. It is not an easy job.

These guys, just as any officials do, put in long hours. What you see on Sunday is just 3 hours. They have to be in the city on Friday and then they are meeting continually Friday night and all day Saturday. They also meet after each game and I'm sure they go over the entire game again before they leave to go home. I know the NBA guys watch the entire game over with an observer pointing out things they missed and I'm sure the NFL must have some sort of game observations.

Believe me, they are being watched and worked over. Few in here would want or could stand that type of scrutiny.
