That was a very astute observation. Anytime a running back breaks free for a 73 yard run it's going to be disturbing to say the least.

And the first two games we play are in this division and both teams plan on giving us a big dose of the running game to see if we still cant stop the run, the rats have stock piled some big backs just for this occasion, we better get this fixed in pre season or 0-2 is a probable start for us this year...

Way too early for any kind of as segment especially when 3 of our front 7 were either out or out of position. Also Timmons was pulled out of the hole and who knows does Big Mac eat up more space closing the hole or does Shazier have the speed to break it up before it goes anywhere or does Troy read what's coming and blow the play up? I will hold off judgement until we see the defense as a whole. The way I'm looking at it right now we are going to have a nice rotation up front when everyone gets back in there.

Everyone pointed out everything I wanted to post but I will add
two questions. Do we need to fine another number two quarterback?
Do we dare start spence over shazier?

It's not way too early, our emphasis going into camp should be to stop the run after bleeding yards to the run game last year, and it doesnt matter if starters were out or not, every player on defense is taught to stop the run from pop warner to the pros. Theres 3 pre season games left, and if we continue to bleed yards to the running game, we will enter the season with a weakness every team we play will exploit....

I don't think McLendon would help on that play, as he probably wouldn't have been on the field. Troy would have made a difference, and the optimist in me thinks a flag would have been thrown on a hold like that in regular season. A guy can hope, right?

Out of interest, what was the overall rushing yardage for the Giants? While stats are always a bit misleading in preseason, aside from the 73 yarder, the defense seemed to be swallowing up everything from what I could see.

It reminded me a little bit of the Raiders game last year, when one big play obscured an otherwise solid performance. But we could still do without them...

I had to rewind this play 4 times to see what I think really caused the failure on this play. The Giants should have been called for holding. One of their players literally grabbed the jersey of our ILB and dragged him away from the hole. No holding, and that play goes for no gain. There were a lot of non calls on both sides.

I guess we see what Shazier has before we can talk about that. But I was really pleased to see Spence exploding out of the blocks on the first drive.

They were too busy throwing flags for PI. Can't see that lasting all through the season...

it is way too early it was the FIRST preseason game with some key components to the defense missing. The steelers top two playmakers weren't on the field. It was one run with a blatant hold and other then that I believe the Giants starters had one first down against the steelers starters.

I don't think you start spence over Shazier. I read today Shazier likely will be back Sat for the Buffalo game.

Shazier is the better player between the two if you ask me. So start Shazier both now and in the future games

bit of luck and holding involved on that run of 73 yards. I think it was more of a fluke then anything. Will see as previously stated when all of the 1st teamers are on the field. Not overly concerned at this point.

    My thoughts are as follows:

    1. It was impossible to figure out what we had at backup QB as both guys were playing while running for their lives. I honestly don't know what we have as far as backups go. They don't get great WRs to play with. They don't get great RBs to play with. We all saw what they looked like from the Oline perspective.

    2. We don't have any depth that I currently trust on the Oline. It wouldn't surprise me if we start the year with only 8 Olineman on the roster. We have more WRs then we can carry and I think Poole earned himself a spot on the roster assuming his good special teams play continues.

    3. We have always carried 6 or 7 Dlineman, but at the moment I don't think anyone has earned spot 6 or 7. McCullers I think showed enough that we will want to keep him for potential alone. Tuitt isn't going anywhere. I was in the position of keeping one of the young players, but at the moment I think we might have waived Johnson in order to bring back Keisel. I really do.

    4. I think we may be keeping 11 DBs, 9 LBs, and 5 Dlineman with maybe 2 on the PS. In that case they will keep the guys with the most potential to help during the season if it is needed.

    5. I think on the offensive side of the ball, I think we keep 3 QBs, 5 RBs (including W. Johnson and Archer), 6 WRs, 3 TEs, and 8 Olineman with the 8th spot being a crap shoot. 6 WRs seems like a lot, but I think Bryant isn't going anywhere based on potential and Moye is as much ahead of him this year as he was in front of J. Brown last year.

That 73 yd TD reminded me of the 2013 Steelers defense, for a minute I thought Ryan Clark was still playing safety with a guy running right by him. Will Allen missed a tackle , I thought Mitchell was supposed to be fast where was he on that play.?

Figured i'd throw my thoughts in here since theres actually something to talk about for once.

I agree with what most have been saying...

Starting OL looked good...Foster at times looked like the weak link (as much as i hate to say it)...I think he could use to loose some weight.

Some have been complaining about how sucky the backup OL was...and I agree as a UNIT they werent that great. But some of those individual pieces played well in backup duty last year (Wallace and Whimper). So I'm not worried about the backups they keep...they will do OK if called upon.

Archer was exciting....cant wait to see more.

Bell seemed to continue where he left off last year.

Wheaton made a good catch or two...again want to see more.

JB is what i thought he was last year (I thought he should have made it over Moye).

Bryant showed his potential...he had a rough first game...but I think he will be OK.

Grad had a rough game at times...but he is not as bad as he seemed at times...no need to worry about him.

    L. Jones...I'd like to see him get to play with the starters...he had like 1-2 seconds to pass before someone was in his face. Thats not fair to him.

JJ I didnt get to see his sack...but I think its only the beginning for him.

Would have like to see more of Mitchell

    S. Thomas looked solid out there and it should earn more playing time.

McCullers should make the roster...and i want to see more of him.

I'd also like to tip my hat to Nick Williams...in his limited time played well also...I thought he'd make the team at one point last year, then he got hurt. Right now outside of the group of Heyward, Tuitt, McLendon, Thomas and McCullers...I think Williams is in the lead of the rest...with Mauro not too far behind...Arnfelt didnt get to play much so I'm not ranking him yet.

Spence...wow...congrats kid...he was everywhere. I can see them when they go to nickel instead of putting another DB in...but him in instead. If he continues playing well...how can you deny him the chance to get more snaps.

Tuitt...I'm shocked I haven't seen more people talking about him. Yes he had a false start...but I think it was a good showing from the rookie. I hope he continues to improve and he might be starting come the 1st game.

Probably more i missed/forgot but oh well.

the thing I noticed on the big run play was at the snap will allen started to run deep immediately. guessing like clark used to do last year. I think it's because they need a step or two advantage as they age. it cost clark his job too.

I'd much rather see the shark on the field way before allen and I don't think that run would have happened. why have this speed and youth if we are not going to use it over old and slow? sure allen might know where he needs to go, but it takes him to long to get there.

Barring injuries I hope we see more Shark and more Spence all year. DL has to figure out how to get these players on the field. They are TOO
good and bring TOO much to the game. They will MAKE things happen.

I agree that we should see more of Shamarko out there.

I'm not sure that the run wouldn't have happened with Shark out there, simply because he's a guy who commits to the tackle, and will get burned once or twice when he mis-judges. However, over the course of five, ten, sixteen games - the problems of having a too-slow Allen out there will far surpass those small mis-judgements.

We have too much speed on our roster to have some of these older, slower guys on the field as much as we did last season imo.

I saw the picture on the internet and the Giants O-lineman was holding Timmons on that 73 yd TD.

That wasn't the only reason. The formation was bad - the Steelers had 5 up on the line but a huge hole on that side. There were three Giants on the line between the Steelers tackle and JJ. Too easy for them to seal off 4 Steelers and then they only had to deal with Timmons and JJ. Mitchell also took a terrible angle on the play.
