Good to see we're keeping Victorian around. And Cromartie-Smith... though I have a feeling we draft high for a safety next year, so he better get a move on if he's going to fulfil his potential.

I'm wondering if the WRs will stay for long, or if anyone claims them early days. I also wonder where Marquis Maze will end up at.

I find Toney Clemons a bit of a surprise. I figured they would put Williams on the PS..

I watched all of the preseason games and Tony never really stood out to me?

I also thought Williams would be on the PS.

There's no WAY they put Johnson on the practice squad. They have 3 quarterbacks on the 53 man roster. They have no need for him in practice. If they had kept 2 QBs, then he would be useful as a scout QB, but Batch will be doing those duties now. No surprise at all there.

They may not have been able to put Williams on the PS...he's played in like 18 games/etc...I dont remember the PS restrictions but yeah. And why wouldnt they PS a guy they draft in Clemons and work with him/etc. McCoy is always on the PS...I dont know why...he hasnt shown much...I didnt have him making it...and I personally only had them keeping 1 WR on the PS...but couldnt pick who between the 2 they did keep. And that QB Johnson would make it and an RB...though I dont know if that RB Harris could go to the PS...or if they would bring back Ford. They usually seem to keep 1 RB around on the PS.

You might be right.. I found this http://www.cincyjungle.com/2011/9/4/240 ... -agreement

    (a) The Practice Squad shall consist of the following players, provided that they have not served more than two previous seasons on a Practice Squad: (i) players who do not have an Accrued Season of NFL experience; and (ii) free agent players who were on the Active List for fewer than nine regular season games during their only Accrued Season(s). An otherwise eligible player may be a Practice Squad player for a third season only if the Club by which he is employed that season has at least 53 players on its Active/Inactive List during the entire period of his employment.

I would have put him there, just because we will need a back-up most likely next season. I would let him learn there and replace one of the 2 old dog next year. If either has to play this year for more than spot duty, they may get injured, and then there is the age thing for both guys. Lefty looks like he has trouble moving at all anymore. Plus we almost always keep 3 QBs on the 53-man roster. Usually the 3rd on is not active (I recall they changed the rule about that recently, but forget the details) and if he is needed the #1 QB cannot return to the game.

I almost forgot they did let one draft pick go in Terrence Frederick. Also I wonder what happened to Corbin Bryant...were both these players claimed elsewhere, did they just decide not to sign them or what....

I feel like Jamie McCoy's spot could have been put to better use. I wonder if they signed him not because they see a future for him, but because they literally need a tight end for practicing, since Saunders won't be able to for 4 weeks. I'd rather that spot went just about anywhere else. I never liked the guy.

Learn WHAT?! By watching? He wouldn't even be getting on the practice field. They may as well send him his paycheck in the mail and let him stay home and watch film. I notice that I don't see any announcements that XYZ TEAM has picked up Jarrod Johnson. If he were that good, someone would have snapped him up by now. So, if he really IS that good - he needs to work out at home, get his agent to talk to the Steelers in February and come back to camp. My suspicions are that he's NOT that good - and that there will be PLENTY of available arms to come into camp next year to compete as a backup. They're always out there.

The practice squad is there to get guys into PRACTICE, not just to hold onto someone who happened to perform well in camp so that you can have him the following year. I'll repeat what I said before - in a year or two, we will all have forgotten that Jerrod Johnson even existed, and he'll be telling his buddies at work stories about how he once had a "cup of coffee" with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Glad to see both Gilreath and Clemons on the practice squad since there are only 4 receivers on the 53. Gilreath could make 5.

if brady was so good he would have been a first round pick too. that's not much of an argument md. the kid made very accurate throws to spots only his receivers could catch them. he was hurt in college so thats the only reason the kid was not drafted. not every qb is here to replace ben. if it happens in a few years then so be it, but you have to at least start somewhere. charlie and lefty are definately not going to be that guy. the more years you put into a qb that has a big arm, an accurate arm,a big body, and tons of potential the learning curve will be much less, beacuse he already has many of the attributes you look for in a qb. they don't have to be drafted. we cut john unitas and len dawson too. if they were so good we would have kept them. it's just a matter of moving your team forward in a position before you have to. when you have to find someone thats usually when there are none to be found. then it's to late.

our qb's had the highest rating in the league in preseason , with JJ having the highest. he played well for a rookie. the shoulder injury set him back a couple of years until now and now it's right. qb's with his accuracy and size don't grow on trees.

Agree to disagree mac. I'm not saying that's he's would/could/should replace Ben. I'm just saying they're not going to keep 4 qb's on the 61-man roster and that guys like Johnnson aren't hard to find to make up a preseason roster. I have already said that guys like Brady and Warner are an exception - and that we're better off with two capable veterans as our backups. Obviously, since Johnson hasn't even gotten a sniff from another team, there are 32 GMs, HCs and OCs who tend to agree with me. They're all looking at the same waiver wire that we are, and the name Jarrod Johnson doesn't even deserve a phone call. Watching a guy peform well in practice and with your 3s and 4s in the preseason game, it's easy to say "WOW! This guy is really good!" and I'm not saying he's a scrub. I'm just saying that he's probably NOT NFL QB material - plain and simple. I can see one team swinging and missing on a future big-time player (Dawson, Unitas, Marino) - but those guys did not fly under the radar of the rest of the league.

Who knows? Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Johnson's phone is ringing so often that he's just trying to get his best deal. Maybe he's sorting through a mountain of offers and playing one team off of another. Maybe he'll sign a big deal with another team, and 3 years from now, we'll be comparing him to every great quarterback who ever lived. I think I'll take my chances that the safest bet is that he'll be back with the Arizona Rattlers or some other Arena team like he was last year. Maybe the Power could sign him so that he can stay close by in case the Steelers want him in camp again next year. Philly signed him last year - he didn't make it. Pittsburgh signed him this year - didn't make it. Looks to me like he has had his shots, and has basically shown that he is not NFL material.

nobody said he'll be all pro by this time next year and not all teams are made up of starters. of course batch and lefty are better then he is now, they have been in the league a long, long, long ok one more long time. just like hines and farrior and smith though, guys age before your eyes and if you don't find young talent to bring along and wait til the last minute to do it you usually miss out. teams need backups, and there's nothing wrong with bringing along a guy to be a 2nd or 3rd string qb. they take a long time to get up to speed moreso then any other position. charlie and lefty are the safe bets. having a young talent on the PS for a year is not a bad thing. with all the walking wounded we have, i believe we had to keep some other positions first. i don't think it had as much to do with his play as it was numbers. you can't deny the fact the kid throws a beutiful accurate pass and he's got prototypical size. he showed much more to me than dixon in the passing game. how this kid dropped passes into receivers was a thing of beauty. i hope he does come back next year.

Again - agree to disagree - but

    Philly didn't want him.
    Pittsburgh didn't want him.
Heck - he's not even on the Arizona Rattlers roster anymore.

Guess that's why we're not coaches. They see the real talent/lack of - and set up the team accordingly.

He won't be back at Steelers camp - that's my bet.

Was JJ in Canada last year? An Aggie friend of mine told me he played up there.
