As a wise coach once said-Its not my job to motivate players but to coach motivated players-.

I'm more interested in and hoping that Porter can coach up these guys, better technique and what to look for watching tape. Now if these guys get inspired and more passionate about their craft then that's icing on the cake.

I agree with the quote on some level. That being said, I also think players tend to reflect the personality of their coach, at least in today's game. That is not to say motivation comes from the coach, but if a coach looks down...the team will look down. If the coach seems fired up, the players are usually fired up.

This team is seriously lacking attitude, they brought in two guys that will not only help instill that back into the team but also elevate their overall performance. Munch and Peezy were great hirings, IMO.

I trust Porter in his capabilities to be a great motivator and mentor Just hope the players will live up to all the hype. This team lost alot of mojo yet the second half of the past season i seen spark in players eyes along with positive speech during interviews. That being said if they build on that along with our present arsenal we should have an awesome run!

I'm glad he is mentoring JJ, however, Timmons is the guy that I would really like to see pick up on Porter's attitude. I think Timmons has more potential than Porter had but he lacks the mean streak that carried Porter. If Timmons can grab some of that "Barnyard Boss" he will be unstoppable. I had forgot all about Peezy trying to get on the Raven's bus lol!

who are the guys in here helping this team? tunch, peezy, lake, olsavsky, stapleton, hoke in the past, dawson in the past and several other good ex players. put that along with the munch hiring, mann, hiring last year, the new RB coach, the backup o-line coach, danny smith at least makes it exciting, we have one heck of a solid coaching staff and mix of dedicated good ex-players surrounding all this next generation talented youth. teach them the force ex jedi masters.

I've never really subscribed to that. I may become a believer though if the linebacker corps show an unnatural fire this season. :)

Anyone remember when Porter and Ray Lewis had to be broken up during a coin toss in Baltimore? I always thought it was funny how overly pious Ray Ray was when talking about Porter. Only a couple years removed from a mysterious stabbing incident, too.

I just hope he really does have/will have them fired up. I remember watching some Seattle games last year and the defense's speed, aggressiveness, and killer instinct was just amazing. Those guys were brutal and wanted to win and it showed. I remember when I watching those Seattle games I was thinking (sadly) how I hadn't seen the Steelers acting like that for a long time.

Let's hope that gets turned around this year.

That went away with the fines they started getting and the suspension. Haven't been the same since, but the "New" "Hot" market teams get a pass on their play style.

When playing here Joey had the right mix of cockiness and confidence and respect. Joey seemed to do the right thing to get our team int he right mindset. This includes his replies to the hawks challenges in the superbowl, holding everyone back and letting the Bus take the field first or defending the terrible towel.

We have been missing this since he left. Yes we have had leaders but Joey was different. I'm so excited to see him back leading our linebackers with his swagger! I can't wait to see what he can accomplish with our defense!!!!

All those PED violations were probably connected to that. :innocent:

Kidding aside, their defense is definitely feared.

It's good to have Porter back but, either these guys have what it takes or they don't as far him motivating them.

so much hype was about the seabirds DB's when their D front was amazing. lots of pressure makes the DB's look much better as we know. when those big DB's didn't have to cover a lot of people on deeper routes because the D front didn't give teams time to get deeper. it allowed the DB's to play the game they were best at. short stuff with a big hit. they had about 3-4 of their D-linemen up for free agency, I'm not sure how many they ended up signing. that's where we needed the improvement. the quickness of the pressure.

For me, I just can't get past the overriding feeling he should be suiting up whenever I see him coach. KInd of surreal.

    Hope he stays here 4ever.

I don't quite subscribe to what you are expressing here. I'm motivated to get up and go to my job everyday because I know it provides for my family and allows us to not worry about the doctor bills(excellent healthcare) but that doesn't mean I am always happy to be there in fact a lot of times I am down right miserable. That being said if I had someone that could fire me up and really get me excited about the job I would welcome it. So should these guys need Porter to motivate them? No putting on the Steelers uniform should do it if the paycheck doesn't but if Joey can help get them worked up on game day heck yeah use any tool that helps you win

Porter is a assistant LB coach not a Coordinator or position coach, so I don't know how much firing up players he will actually do. Just because he fires them up doesn't mean they will play better, people are making too much of this IMO.

He was brought in to help Jones, hes not just giving rah rah speeches. And football is about having a certain mindset too, about believing you can own the person across from you, Porter excelled at that, if he can impart that onto them, then even better. At this level, every edge helps.

Players play and coaches coach, I have no problem with Porter being on the staff I just think some people are making too much out of it.
