The gra$$ was greener with the Jets, by a large margin if I remember correctly.

I think I remember the Steelers offer coming in a $20 million and the Jets at $25 million (can't remember the years, 5 maybe?). I'm sure it's on the inter-webs but I'm too lazy to look it up, lol. Doesn't matter really. That's the problem with these idiotic athletes. They can't see the forest for the trees. They'll jump ship from a great organization with a great surrounding cast and with opportunities to further their career by playing in more post season and Super Bowl games just because somebody comes along with a couple of bucks more (relatively speaking). They need to start asking themselves which organization offers the better future. I think O'Donnell could have lived well on what the Steelers were offering AND he could have possibly been more of a household name by playing in more high profile games. Shoot, he may have been a Super Bowl MVP within the next 3 years had he stayed in Pittsburgh, who knows? I think the Steelers had a much better outlook than the Jets, no doubt! Look at what Brady's done. He's taken well under market value to remain in New England and that's allowed the team to build around him and it's kept him in an ideal spot! I don't think he's hurting for extra spending money. Conversely, look what happened to the primo idiot Mike Wallace when he left Pittsburgh. He hasn't done crap. I predicted that when he left that he would never approach the kind of success that he had in Pittsburgh and so far I've been right. The same will happen to the aspiring rapper, Lev Bell. Write it down! He could have signed a long-term deal with the Steelers and been financially secure in addition to having opportunities to compete for Super Bowls year after year. He'll sign with some team with an idiotic owner who's willing to pony up the $17 million a year and then get stuck behind a mediocre offensive line because the team can't afford to pay his blockers.

I think it was $15mil offer by the Steelers, but I could be wrong. I agree with what you're saying. I didn't think he was leaving Pittsburgh, but he really couldn't stay with the Jets offer on the table.

    Edit:
"The Steelers' offer of $3.15 million a season did not come close to matching the Jets' offer, which averages $5 million per season and includes a $7 million signing bonus."

Bradshaw excelled on the big stage, he played his best in big games and called a lot of his own plays, took a beating back when the QB was fair play to pound on. He was one tough cookie who had a rocket arm, so my vote has to be him.

This article says the Steelers offer was for $3.75 million per season but that may include the signing bonus of $4 million. Whatever the case, Peter King's title nails it, "...gold instead of glory". I wonder if O'Donnell could go back and reconsider if he'd make the same decision? :hmm:

Bell may give him a run for his money before it's over. Wallace ranks up there too.
    (Dis)honorable mention to Harrison.

Thanks, interesting article. I didn't know much of the backstory. I remember reading about the deal in the paper (back then) and being shocked. It sounds like Neil was torn between staying and going, luckily he had his agent there to point him in the right direction.o_O

Bradshaw had a receiver who would go get the ball (good & bad throws) named Swann & a another guy who would use his skills to out manouver the dbs (Stallworth).

If Ben played on the 70s dynasty, he would have sat Terry down.

I believe that contract negotiation was handled during Tom Donahoe's reign of terror. That guy didn't want to pay anybody. Didn't he refer to re-signing Rod Woodson as the Steelers being the Salvation Army?

Anyway its all a moot point. Guarantee you Neil O'Donnell is currently living on his own private island paid for by Jerry Jones. That next contract was peanuts compared to the millions JJ paid NOD off.

AB, Bell, santonio Holmes, Heath Miller, I shot myself in the leg, the bus, Hines Ward, c'mon man. Ben would still be in a heap on the Astro turf after the turkey Jones hit.

And Ben would have been asking him how to be a better winner and leader. And especially, how to throw such a tight hard spiral.

I wonder how much of that big contract Larry Brown signed with the Raiders the next season was diverted to O'Dummy? Brown didn't do crap after that!

Ben on Noll's team or Terry on Tomlin's?

It's not even close, Big Ben would have 7 SB rings.
