    steelers match offer

No link my score center app went off and they matched the frickin offer. I know there is a thread about Sanders but this is about them actually matching. This is a bad move all around the only way it's not is if the Steelers try to trade him to the pats becausethis is a one year rental for a team that needs a lot more then that. After some of the things brown said I don't see how these two get along this season. I can't believe they matched the frickin offer.

Never thought they'd do it. Part of me is glad he is back and part of me feels like we missed a golden opportunity. The Pats obviously saw something in him, maybe he is on the verge of having a break out season, he did increase his production a lot last year, I just hope he stays healthy and since we just passed on a 3rd round pick, they better sign him to an extension or this move makes no sense.

I don't like it. It puts us 700k under the cap and we still have others to sign. Not to mention he'll be a UFA next year and I don't think he's worth a big 2nd contract when we could have gotten a top WR in rds 1-2 and paid far less for the next 4years.

Ben lobbying hard!!!! Sure hope he gave up some of his fat contract to sign sanders. Otherwise it is a bad move.

to me this tells me the front office thinks that they can get a long term deal done.. no way in hell do they match the offer if they think hes only a one year rental.. they cant be that stupid... so i bet they now work on a long term deal and have some idea on the numbers... got to .. pleaseeeeeeeee tell me thats what they have in mind...got to ..

as i said in the other sanders signed thread... they must think they have a decent chance of signing him ot a long term contract or they wouldnt ever bring him back here for one season and give up a 3rd round pick..

Someone is coming off the books June 1st isn't there? Think it frees up a big chunk. But yeah, surprising move, didn't see it coming, thought they would take the draft pick and a receiver they would control for 4 years at 700,00.

Has to be, no way they did this for a 1 year rental. I just hope Sanders proves easier to negotiate with then Wallace.

Yes,colon and his 5 mil is coming off the books but that money is earmarked for the rookie pool and in-season needs due to injurys. Totally agree on the one year rental deal.

I hope no-one trys to match Mclendon or redmans offer now cause we can't match that.

I think the coaches won this decision rather than the GM. Football wise, this makes sense, long-term GM wise this does not. It is overpaying him and he may still walk next year. I hope this wasn't a bad decision.

Stupid move. Front office is a joke. If you were going to match any decent offer he got, why not just place a 2mill tag on him instead of the 1.3m? Now we lose 500k in cap room because our front office is stupid.

This one was a tough call. I have mixed feelings on this call and matching the Patriots. Just hope he doesn't pull a Wallace and plays the year not to get hurt. I do think he has more passion than Wallace.

If I was him I'd be pissed. The steelers tried to low ball him by only paying him 1.3mill. Now the steelers have to pay closer to his market rate. If I'm him, I'm pissed the steelers tried to take advantage of me.

Not surprising one bit. If it had been the initial reported 4mil then yeah he'd be gone. But in reality with loosing Wallace and only having Plax and Cotchery as the only other proven WRs behind Sanders on the team...I'm not one bit shocked. Yeah they could have gotten a late 3rd round pick...but in the end...who knows what that pick could have turned into...there could have been nothing worth it there...we'll never know for sure (well technically we will come draft time but still). Compared to Wallace if they want Sanders long term...I don't think there would be a problem getting a deal done before FA next year.

For the person saying the FO is stupid and a joke...thats just stupid. Big whoop 500K...yeah with being so close to the cap every little bit helps...but ya know what...had they put the higher tag on him then people (like you) would STILL be *****ing they put a high tender on him. They took a chance and for the first time in a number of years it didnt work in their favor...crap happens. They did not low ball him...they did what they and a lot of other teams do...use original round tender on RFA's...1.3mil was a lot more than he'd been making before anyways...and probably with a long(er) term contract he would easily average a few mil a year without a problem. This is how the game works. Now I could see if they did an even LOWER tender than original round on him...where it could "irk" him some...but they didnt.

It's funny so many people complain that the Steelers put themselves in a bad spot cap/etc wise at times and they never keep some of their good younger players with potential...and then when they DO keep one people still ***** and complain. Some of you need to make up your minds.

Was it a good move? For now...but only time will tell.

I really hope the Steelers are trying to squeeze a second or a player from the pats.

Really dude you're complaining about 500k in cap space I think the front office knows what they're doing. Maybe they will try to sign him to a longterm deal now.

lol, just one guy flapping his gums, far more people then not thought the Steelers should let him walk. I think it's as equally silly to think it impossible to replace Sanders, so I don't know what this guy is going on about. Bottom line, if they sign him to an extension, good move, if not, dumb move.

Sorry but some of you guys are dumb. If you have an employee you want to keep and have good relations with, you don't low ball them. I wanted a 2mill/1st rounder tag placed on him. By putting the 1.3mill tag on him, we were saying "hey were are gonna try to under pay you or let you walk if you get a decent offer." Instead, we matched the decent offer signaling that yes we valued you at several mill. Dumb.

A better faith move would have been to place the 2mill tag on him and try to work out a long term deal.

Oh I know...I'm just trying to show some the other side of the coin so to speak to those that are adamant that taking that 3rd round pick was the best thing ever...and now the team is screwed and can't sign anyone/etc...

Just woke up frm a nap, this is not the news i wanted to hear, verry disapointed, ... I think the FO is letting the coaching staff And Ben have a lil bit to much sayso in theses kinds of matters .. Sanders has been a average wr since he has been here. Has he even played a whole season with out missing any games since he was drafted..????...... They should have taken the pic and found some type of playmaker either for offense or defense,......... :praying: this works out for us. GO STEELERS

Well even if this is just a rental I wonder if they did this just to have a younger wr besides just AB? I mean besides AB we have an old Plax and an aging Cotchery. So maybe they just figure they needed someone to get through this season. I also wonder how much of this is Ben lobbying as well. One good thing about this though is that maybe Sanders will do the opposite of Wallace and play all out so he can try and get a big contract. If he's not planning on remaining a Steeler I have no problem with him playing lights out to get a big contract somewhere else as long as it helps us win. Maybe the Steelers think that they'll get the best out of him and that's why they done it.

No surprise. I said the day the offer came out that we'd match. I think Sanders is a player on the rise and two VERY GOOD FRONT OFFICES obviously recognized that. Case closed!

if they matched doesn't it cost us 2.5 mil toward the cap.

they kept a backup to use for a starter, not kept a starter.

talk about the steelers and omar, well omar's on his way out too.

yes they did try to lowball him because they have no money. same as they made wallace play for last year because he was a restricted guy. the only difference is they knew wallace would demand a better tender.

we are trying to replace starters with lesser starters. get used to it for a couple more years.

manny better pick up your game big time.

Obviously they put themselves in a tough position, as the only people excited about rookie WR's are the mock draft guys. It's really the exception (not the rule) that rookie WR's have any kind of impact in their first years. It would have been very difficult losing Wallace and Sanders, with nothing but an old Plexiglass and Cotchery (and some unnamed rookies). I am surprised they didn't gobble up the 3rd rounder, but not totally surprised.

Welcome back Emmanuel, I hope he makes the best of his return.
