It is hard for me to understand a player with so much talent, can be a detriment to a team. But he is.

grabby is one thing - it is why I did not want to draft Porter.

Brain dead is another whole problem, that presents bigger issues.

I'd sit him for the 1st Q vs. CLE. But - honestly, after watching this clown for 3 seasons, he is a lost cause, I think. We are drafting WR #1 or 2 next year. I know some here want a CB, don't think it happens. We will sign Russ, restructure some of those defensive contracts and build this offense. We need to find WR's and a RB to replace Najee.

I was over at my neighbors yesterday. It was me and the rest Bengals fans. All of them were saying he will be in Pittsburgh next year. I told them all we will take Hendrickson also. They didn’t really care for all my cheering.

On the "gesture" - let me first say, I am in no way offended by this or any other nonsense that these grown man-children make on or off the field. Makes no difference to me.

    That said...

The motions that Muth/Naj make differ in one critical way, and that is that GP made a firing motion, as if he was aiming/shooting at the crowd. I get it. Is the penalty stupid? Sure. These, again, are full-grown adults playing a very violent game. Does a finger gun make a difference? Not at all. But rules are rules.

And showing still photos of 3 different people making a "similar" gesture aren't conclusive. Watch the video, you'll see what I mean.

They had a first down that ended up taking place off of both penalties. You might as well blame everyone for not pushing and getting more yards per play.

yeah i didnt think it was a big deal but like you said, some guys are on the officials blacklist. It shouldn’t be that way. Not professional on the refs part imo. Every call should be free of bias. But thats not how the league or this stupid place in general works

TBH its a weird situation, because he is so good. He gets stupid penalties and does emotional garbage, but when he is reigned in he is very clearly a top 10 player at his position. My stance is that acquiring players of his caliber is MUCH harder than trying to keep the personality in line, so I would be willing to give him a 4 year 27+million a year contract, but structure it so that we have reasonable outs if he goes off the rails. Its not as simple as drafting a first round WR and assuming we're getting a stud. Calvin Austin is the only WR on the roster that has proven this year that they are worth being on the roster next year... We would have to do a HUGE overhaul of the WR room if we're getting rid of GP, and if we are serious about trying to win it all (as we should be) it is hard to justify going that route.

We could trade him I guess and sign Higgins as our #1, but that carries risk too. Or we could trade for a #1 WR (like Metcalf or Deebo Samuel) and recoup the pick(s) we send out by dealing Pickens.... but again, its a major overhaul (and we're still drafting an early-ish WR in this scenario).

I think WR in the first is a pretty high possibility whether we keep GP or not. A WR room of Pickens/Egbuka/Austin/Wilson feels pretty good. We could go FA and have a Pickens/Cooper/Austin/Wilson. Trading is just wild speculation. Lots of ways it can go, but I still firmly believe having 14 on our roster makes us a better football team. We just have to trust that Tomlin/Russ/Heyward and the other leaders on our team can help keep him as mentally engaged as possible.

As for the RB situation, I think we will have no problem replacing Najee's prooduction. In all honesty having a more explosive back taking his snaps could open up our offense even more and improve it. There are TONS of quality NFL backs and Najee doesn't really bring anything special. Quinshon Judkins and Omarion Hampton are probably my favorites in the draft and look to go somewhere in the second round.

Famous Chuck Noll quote - "Champions are champions not because they do anything extraordinary but because they do ordinary things better than anyone else."

Tomlin is great motivator and people manager, but he doesn't field teams that do the ordinary things better than anyone else. At all.

I never think of Tomlin as old school at all. He is the embodiment of new school - players' coach, motivator, etc. When I think of old school I think of discipline, focus on fundamentals, teaching, attention to details. I never got that from Tomlin. He has a perfect record with diva WRs. They get worse and eventually are off the team. The Steelers don't seem to value character and intelligence in their player evaluation. Everyone knew Pickens was a head case in college. Always in the doghouse.

He's more "old school" in the approach to the game. He is "new school" in his approach to player and personality management.

I will say that I don't mind taking a chance on high end players with personality issues. Tyreek Hill was a great example of this outside of Pittsburgh, but where would this team be without guys like Pickens or Martavis Bryant? Guys that far outshine their draft status with their play on the field. Sometimes you swing for the fences and see if it pays off. GP is a great player. So was Martavis. Some of them end up flaming out but the career span of an NFL player is so short anyways. I can appreciate us taking occasional swings on high end talent that falls in the draft because of a few question marks. Tomlin is supposed to be great at handling these guys. Its what we pay him for.... let him earn it.
