i like the way heath is being used, like i said a happy medium between the two would be nice. i can't wait til saunders gets back out there. willj. has not been used enough and i'm not crazy about the way we are using rainey. it's early yet. they are not having to commit the safety to come up in run support enough to take advantage. they are stopping our run with the front 7. we need to find a way to break off a run or two into the secondary to even make the safety move from his coverage position. some screens or flairouts to rainey could do this also. then we can send heath down the seam covered by a lb. rainey being flaired out of the backfield, should move the safety. once we prove a lb can't keep up with him out of the backfield, they will have to do this. so far we haven't set this up or attempted to take advantage of his speed on the edges. we also have to make to many 3rd and longs in this style O so far.

    The question for me is:

Are defenses wise to Rainey's talents after preseason, or...
Are we telegraphing the plays involving Rainey, or...
Are the plays involving Rainey taking too long to develop, or...
Am I being too harsh too early on a player who is, after all, a late round rookie?

I think any time you insert a sort of 'specialist' like Rainey, the entire defense, after seeing all the preseason hype, begins to key on him. Unfortunately, every time he enters the game, we go right at him instead of doing something more effective like using him as a decoy.

Speaking of telegraphing plays . . . several times during the game I turned to the person next to me in the seats and said, "Well, here comes another running play." They asked, "How do you know?" I said, because we just replaced Wallace and Brown with Sanders and Cotchery. Sure enough, every time we did that it was a running play that didn't go anywhere. I don't really see the point of pulling out your starting wr's and replacing them with the 3 and 4 guys and basically showing run and then running the ball. It's not like Sanders and Cotchery are exceptional run blockers or anything. It wasn't like it was any specialized situation like short-yardage or third-and-long or anything. It was like 2nd-and-10 or 2nd-and-7 or something.

I'd like to see us mix it up now and then. Put Rainey in and don't direct the play his way. Put Sanders and Cotch in and throw the ball. Keep the defense guessing. So far, Haley's offense has been quite predictable. Although it's only two games in, we're currently 25th in offense (18th pass and 30th run).

i agree we have to have rainey in to at least roll him one way out of the backfield. they have to send someone to account for him. if he lines up as an I back he can at least give the illusion of going left or right and they have to adjust. they are most likely not going to send a LB out there to cover him, and if they do we should score. he's to much of a threat and could make them leave someone else undercovered. i never noticed the sanders-cotchery connection to the run game but that's interesting. maybe some things are just being set up for a later time.

yes i agree it's fairly predictable. having to consistantly make a 3rd down conversion to keep drives alive the whole legnth of the field is a tall order for any team.
