The Patriots are up to their own tricks! Would they like to have Sanders, sure they would. Don't you think it's just a little bit curious that they just offered a 1-year deal AND they doubled the amount ($2.5m) to what the Steelers have budgeted for him to stay on the roster which is $1.25m. That way they know if the Steelers match, that they are further up the salary cap creek or need to cut someone or restructure! Hoge on NFL32 seems to think that they are probably working on a long-term deal.

Just a hunch. If he's willing to uproot, leave his comfort zone and friends over this little amount (little relative to sports) then I just think when it comes to a big contract, he'll be stubborn like Wallace. He knows the Steelers are cash strapped and he's still still sticking the screws to them. Dwyer signed his immediately, that to me shows a guy that wants to be here. (I know, here come the jokes, no one would want him, he still could have waited to see if anyone took an interest.)

And I would normally agree with your point about the odds of successfully picking up another 3rd round WR but I feel this draft offers a lot of good choices.

To all those who think taking a 3rd rounder over keeping Sanders is the way to go. Rather than imagining the HOFer that take in Round 3, lets look at who they actually took in recent yrs and whether a hypothetical trade for that pick for Sanders would have been a Win or a Loss.

2012 Sean Spence. L too bad he got hurt, but so could the guy they take at 3rd this year
2011 Curtis Bown Inc Too early to tell, but I wouldn't trade Sanders for him now
2010 Sanders himself. W. Steelers get a 3 yr younger clone, and his 2010-11 production for free
    2009 Mike Wallace W.
Keenan Lewis. W close call but I'd take Lewis for Sanders now
    2008 Bruce Davis L
2007 Matt Spaeth L. I wouldn't trade Sanders for Spaeth
    2006 Willie Reid L
Anthony Smith. L. It would be a surprise to me Sanders career wasn't better than Smiths
2005 Trai Essex. W maybe, it gets hard to compare full careers with potential
    2004 Max Starks. W
    2003. None

You might score these differently, but it's close to a 50/50 shot that whoever the Steelers take with the Sanders pick will be better than Sanders. Let alone the impact of starting the season with AB and geriatric ward.

yes but this year draft is full of wr and sanders could be gone next year anyway without earning a 3rd pick , then add you will have 3,3 milion in cap vs 600k
i would sign him for 4 years , 2 milion sb 500 base salary in first year and 2 , 3 ,4 in the next 3years total (11,5 ), if he agree we will even lower the cap hit we have now , if not bye

tTrue the draft is full of WRs, but when they drafted Sweed and Willie Reid everyone thought they were steals.

SB against the Packers. They were playing pitch and catch when he was out there, because the Packers couldn't cover all of them.

We're not losing a HOF in Sanders either.

In another year I would not worry about losing Manny (although I do like him). But with so many holes in our roster, and our poor drafting recently, this just feels like a tipping point. I cannot see us having a winning record this year. I hate seeming like a doom-and-gloomer, but I think some people on this board need to lose the black-and-gold colored glasses and look at reality. Our choice is either a rookie, Burress, or Cotchery for a #2 WR. How often do we start rookies? Now we have little choice. Now our passing game matches our running game. I sincerely hope I am wrong

Since we're a little thin at WR and they won't have to break the bank to retain him, I think Sanders will be back in Black & Gold next year. Contrary to what was said above, the Steelers could sign him without restructuring or cutting anyone.

    Agreed.
I expected the offer to be higher, and that`s what I was gonna ask.
But, at 2.5 Mil... I think he`s worth keeping for at least this year.
As to the discussion about why we would think he would go the way of Wallace, when it comes to negotiations...
Remember the term "Young Money Crew"?
He was/is a third of it..
Personally, I think he gets huert a bit too much, to justify a big money contract, but that COULD just be random bad luck...
I would keep him for this year, and hope he plays well, stays healthy, and we can sign him to a REASONABLE deal after this season.
I kinda doubt it, though... If he plays well, and stays healthy, my gut tells me he will follow the money after the year.
Still worth having this year, tho... IMHO.
    GO STEELERS!

Let him leave and take the pick you can always find another receiver he only had 1 td last season, Sanders and Brown fumble too much. Then in the draft find a speed receiver and a big physical receiver Brandon Marshall type of player. If he leaves take Patterson at #17.

Yes, they can but will they want to. Our cap situation isn't going to improve any next year, we may very well lose him next season with no compensation. Given how deep this WR class is, I like our chances of grabbing a couple of good receivers.

Rarely do I disagree with you. I do here. The patsies know what they're doing in trying to cripple the steelers to lessen competition to gain an AFC advantage.

Their gamble= We gave sanders a 1.3 mil dollar offer and it leaves us 1.9 mil under the cap. They offer him a measly 2.5 mil, not too high we can't resign him but if we do that leaves us just 700k under the cap effectively ending any more FA signings and we need to have a few more. If we don't match that offer we loose a talented quick WR who knows our system leaving us with one young and two older WRs.

I think the Steelers call the patsies move and let sanders walk. We gain 1.3 mil in cap space moving us up to 3.2 mil under AND we gain an extra 3rd pick. Now we draft a better WR in the 2nd rd and have him at a cheaper pay scale for 4 yrs instead of signing sanders to an mulit yr mulit-mil $ extension.

Sanders would have been a UFA next year anyways, why not get a 3rd now instead of nothing next year.

Pats are up to something, move makes no sense so I could see your scenario being a reason why.

While Sanders is a better outside guy than Brown, he is still more of an inside guy. The team already signed Brown long term. Around Brown the team needs a true outside guy, third receiver if Sanders goes, and backups. Cotchery, Burress, and Gilreath are here in case the draft does not provide these guys and Sanders goes. Brown is the teams current Hines; a number two work horse that needs a big play guy on the outside.

While I would like to see a starting caliber outside receiver added to the team in the draft, I say do not draft the best receiver on the board in the first three rounds unless they are worth it even if Sanders goes. This team needs an offensive weapon that is on the field this year out of the draft though; that could be a receiving tight end or running back. Draft the best player.

I say take the 3rd round pick due to cap issues. Sanders is good, but like I said the team needs someone to compliment Brown and not someone just like him.

Should of let Burress go and we not of had this issue with Sanders. UNLESS the Steelers and Haley actually decide to USE Burress, otherwise utside of depth, why have Burress on the roster again this year? He's big and definitely a red-zone threat at the very least, why not really try and throw his way alot and see what happens. His size advantage over most cb's is great, incorporate him into the offense, please! And maybe, just maybe that is their plan for Burress this year, we will wait and see!

Losing Wallace and potentially Sanders, they will HAVE to use Burress more.

Suddenly, Young Money became retirement account money with Burress and Cotchery plus Heath and Spaeth as the TE's.

I think we need to resign him. Let him walk next year and we'll get a 3rd rounder in 2015.

I thought if we re-signed him and let him walk next year that we wouldn't get a pick.

Sure we would. Can't predict a third, but losing him in free agency would mean a compensatory pick the for the following year.
