Did a quick analysis on Meyer before he came to the Steelers.

His offensive lines for the Chargers and Panthers were in the bottom tier of the league for most of his tenure at those places.

They were bad units before he took the job and most of the players on those units I don’t recognize as high pedigree players. Does that mean he was unfortunate and just didn’t have alot to work with or were there some high pedigree draft picks that he failed to develop?

My concern is that in all of his tenure at his previous NFL stops and with Steelers it appears that he really doesn’t move the trend line with the performance of the offensive line and there is no record of him developing any players during his tenure at those places.

    2023 Steelers Offensive Line

Ranked 9th worst in average pocket time

Ranked 10th worst in sack percentage

Ranked 11th worst in pressure percentage

But we were only 4th in blitzes faced

Ranked 7th worst in yards before contact

My observation is Meyer might be a decent coach if the line was already established. My concern is he hasn’t really shown any aptitude in developing offensive lines or players to reach their maximum potential. We have invested alot of resources in this offensive line through free agency and the draft. I hope he can get the job done.

A lot less worried with Meyer despite the statistics. My major question to all of this is the amount of shake up regarding the OC and HC as a whole. In addition, many of these lines are not what I would consider brimming with talent.

As the OP says, can only do so much with middle of the road talent. Unless people were expecting him to be the likes of Bill Callahan, Dante Scarnecchia or even Jeff Stoutland, no way were these lines ever going to get better after having two years on average to do so; three at most.

I get it’s his third year here but at the very least it can’t be prudent moving Jones back and forth. You gotta know the guys talent and where he stands developmentally before starting with that stuff.

As a Pat Meyers basher, I checked the News every day this offseason to see if the Steelers had hired a new O-Line coach. Nothing ever came of it. Hired in Feb 2022, Pat Meyer's contract should have expired in Feb 2024.

Maybe for some unknown reason Pat Meyer signed a longer contract than the standard 2-year deal for assistant coaches. Because I still to this day have not seen a single article about Pat Meyer signing with the Steelers for the 2024 season.

When Arthur Smith was hired, I was hoping he would be bringing in a new O-Line coach. Sure, at first thought it was Munch this and Munch that, cause that is a dream of mine Munch returning to Pittsburgh, but there were other O-Line coaches available this offseason.

After the Dotson and Green disgrace, you would have thought Pat Meyer was run out of town on a Rail.

This reeks of Tomlin. Keep his boy Dan Less on the field. Put Dan Less on the field on the right and see how he does.

What I don't understand is why Arthur Smith didn't bring in his own O Line coach :hmm: Guess Meyer is under contract and we know Art II doesn't like to pay anyone on the couch. Or Tomlin wanted to keep him.

the run game improved under meyer. this offense is predicated on the run game carrying the team which in turn will carry the passing game. meyer has done what they wanted in improving the run game. it's a philosophy problem more than anything.

injuries kill cohesiveness. troy didn't practice at all. jones is hurting so moving him will not just solve the problem. it will just create more problems.

everyone wants to hate on moore but he wasn't the one giving up the sacks the last two weeks. it was the guys playing on the right side ie our two first rounders. OK are both just playing out of position? somebody has to play the right side. we can't go into week one with 3 LT's on the field to start.

jones played quite a bit on the right side last year and practiced there. he has played and practiced there this year. he practiced both sides every day in college. why now all of a sudden is he looking like he's never done it before?

no that is far from the facts. read what i posted and it brings a lot into perspective. check what he has brought in the run game. that brings even more perspective. this offense is being built around the run game. do we want a pass game guru so we can say he's not a good fit and we can't run the ball? it's not that easy in the NFL to just through any player in there and be a top 10 unit.

Except moving Jones around isn't a Meyer call. That decision befalls on Tomlin.

Tomlin has been the HC since 2023. Meyer arrived last season. Smith this season.

Overall, the buck stops with Tomlin. Mind you, this isn't the first time we have seen Tomlin do this to young Offensive Lineman. However, Broderick's case is even more unique; he appears to have regressed even more than the likes of Kevin Dotson and arguably Kendrick Green.

Talent wise?! Broderick is far above and beyond what the likes of Green is. In practice?! Even Kendrick looked way better in the last preseason game compared to Broderick.

I think part of the issue is definitely his injury. He wasn’t even using his upper body to really block. But he had some pass blocking issues at the end of last season and it is alarming that they showed up in preseason as well.

It is a combination of all of the above. His elbow injury, for all we know, may be even more serious than the team is letting on. Ligaments and tendons in that part of the arm are both important and sensitive as well; even minor ailments possibly amounting to a major detriment.

I still very much believe that Broderick Jones possesses Franchise Caliber Left Tackle capability. For that matter, his fellow Georgia Bulldog alum in Andrew Thomas of the New York Giants, struggled with near identical technical and fundamental mistakes early on in his career. Look at him now; a Top Five NFL LT. Broderick Jones, to me, has more potential than Thomas came out. That said, in order for Jones to reach that potential, he is still very much in need of development from both the fundamental level and the discipline level as well.

Sitting him to heal will be the one way to calm many dissenters for certain. Another is to obviously have him ride the bench to get him better. As asinine as this is going to sound; Dan Moore has been the best performing Offensive Tackle on the entire team. Let me repeat that; the whipping boy of the Offense has been the best Offensive Tackle on the team; Troy Fautanu's debut no less.

Even more crazy?! Dan Moore has been arguably the best Offensive Lineman overall this entire preseason!!

You make alot of valid points. Even with Dan Moore that shows there is something to be said for experience. In addition the guy has been fortunate in that he hasn’t been asked to swap positions unlike Jones. That is why it is better in my mind to just put him behind Moore and let him learn the position and heal up. Its just a shame he didn’t get alot of reps in training at left tackle. I think that was a complete waste of developmental for him.

Moore's initial issue was the lack of continuity of Offensive Line Coaches; from Adrian Klemm in 2021 to Pat Meyer in 2022. Fast forward to 2023 and... you got me on what the issue was for Moore. He was much better a season ago in 2022 compared to last season. That said, lineman from both Offensive and Defensive Positions usually take three years to develop. Dan clearly looked like he regressed in 2023 but somehow, someway, has looked much, much improved thus far in the preseason.

Dan alluded to the fact that Arthur Smith's Offense makes him more comfortable than in Canadas (though any Offensive Lineman, Trent Williams included, would feel miserable). Perhaps Smith's blocking schemes are giving Moore the breakthrough he needs.

Colin Cowherd mad a good point. Tomlin is a defensive minded head coach. There aren’t alot of them in the NFL anymore and the ones that are have traditionally struggled to develop offensive lines and QB’s. I think there is some truth to that with Tomlin. He has traditionally struggled on offense even with Ben until we had the right OC’s in place. Obviously it was hard to evaluate near the end of Ben’s career because he wasn’t himself but you look at teams like SF, LA Rams or the Chiefs with Offensive minded coaches and they all have good offensive lines. With that being said if thats an area of weakness and not Tomlin’s forte then why don’t we invest more in offensive coaches? Why didn’t we beef up the offensive line coaching room? I believe our saving grace in all of this is Arthur Smith isn’t gonna let that offensive line fail to the extent it hurts his resume. I am glad they played bad in that game to highlight the issue so that the coaches stop kidding themselves and make corrections and address the issues now.

I think offensive lines work best when they are communicating and working in tandem. With all of this moving players around I think it really hinders the unity and cohesiveness of the offensive line. Perfect example is you have an inferior talent in Dan Moore outplaying a more talented guy in Broderick Jones because he has been afforded the luxury of playing in one position. If Tomliin is causing the musical chairs then Arthur Smith and or Meyer need to step up and say stop this madness it isn’t how you develop offensive lineman at least not in their first few years in the league. We have way to many moving parts on the offensive line to begin adding to it by swapping players back and forth only makes it worse.
