    Seahawks got killed by packers and Broncos lost to titans. Aside from a lucky/ref driven cowboys team, this league is up for grabs.

    SteelElvis made a comment about this during Pittsburghs losing streak then.

    I made a similar comment after the Eagles started falling off.

    No fan know the outcome. All the more reason these so called "early season SB picks" announcements are humorous.

    As the late basketball coach, Chuck Noe used to say, "Is is parity or mediocrity?"

    I seriously put zero stock in those picks. I wouldn't care if everybody and their brother picked us it would have literally zero effect on how I would set my expectations. I guess about the only time I can think of the oddsmakers getting it right was when they picked my Cubbies last year. Although oddsmakers and sports writers are two totally different things.

    Indeed they are. Some of them take it a bit to the extreme even.

    As for the Cubs, I was pretty sure that after falling short last year, Madden was not going to fluke a second chance. Either way;

    Belated congratulations to the Cubs. They earned it. Maybe now Bob Nutting can learn from them; doubly disappointing considering I know about his lack of payroll and I do not even watch baseball. :rawk:

    As a Pirate's fan, it has to be sickening to see your rival win; possibly even more considering most if not all of the Cubs big guns return this year. :hardrock:

    Well let's think about this. Kris Bryant, Javy Baez, Addison Russell, Kyle Schwarber, Albert Almora Jr, Wilson Contreras, and others are all young guys that contributed greatly. They are also homegrown. Also Jake Arrieta had done NOTHING until he got with Chris Bosio and I don't even think the Cubs had a clue of what he would become. John Lackey? Seriously. If you want to say Lester is who we bought that's ironic given that he lost game one and also helped to blow the huge lead in game 7. When did we "buy" Kyle Hendricks? He was homegrown. Also if you want to say we bought it by getting Chapman that is also quite hilarious given that he ultimately blew the lead and it was homegrown talent again that came out on the mound and finally finished it. If you want to say that we bought it by getting Jason Heyward then it is also hilarious because he was terrible at the plate all year and I can promise you they didn't give him that huge deal JUST for what he would do in the outfield. At one point he was actually benched in the post season. So I'm curious as to your reasoning on this. I think I just illustrated pretty clearly that we didn't "buy" the World Series. I'm honestly curious as to your rebuttal of these points. Given the case that I just very clearly presented it would appear that there are some sour grapes somewhere... Although I totally agree on your point about the NFL and who gets hot at the right time.

    Bought the world series?? That's never happened before! Well, except for the Marlins, Diamondbacks.............
    Goodell won't be happy until the Browns and Chargers and Jags actually make the SB.

    Obviously Lester and Heyward were our highest paid players. Both Chicago and Cleveland took pitchers from the Yankees. Andrew Miller was probably the biggest contributor for the Indians in their postseason success. To say the Cubs "bought" this World Series is not accurate at all. It was our homegrown talent that got us over the hump. Zobrist was the biggest contributor that wasn't homegrown and his contract is $56 million but in baseball that's chump change compared to what some people get. Dexter Fowler just got $87 million from the Cards. It would be one thing if we went out and got a bunch of high profile free agents who came in and done all the work but that's clearly not the case with this team. Hendricks, Baez, Contreras, Bryant, and Russell all had salaries under a million dollars in 2016. So did Almora. So did Schwarber. Rizzo himself made more than Contreras, Russell, Baez, Bryant, and Hendricks combined last year and he has been with the Cubs for years. Any other theories?
